both were auto white, ae exposure, same lens.

interesting - looks like the high light in the first one messed up the auto WB in the M8, where as the RD-1 was fine (but didn't have to deal with the high contrast/highlight)...

the M8 had to deal with more difficult mixed lighting so it's not surprising that the auto everything wasn't up to the task...

would have been interesting if you took the same image with each, wonder if the RD-1 would handle the mixed/high contrast lighting differently/better?

actually, i cropped the window out of the rd1 shot, so same conditions.

Looks like the M8 chose the wrong white balance?

The cameras have different crop factors, different metering patterns, and even though the window is cropped out in the rd1 picture, the framing is somewhat different. So there may have been more or less of the window in the rd1 shot before the crop. Thus even if both shots were with the SAME camera, the way the AWB responded might have been different in the two shots due to small changes in the balance of daylight vs. tungsten.

What would be interesting to see is the difference in the images if everything were set manually (same settings on both cameras), including the WB.

Also - the M8 had a couple of Firmware upgrades and at least one affected white balance. Is it possible the camera had not been updated?

The first one is oof and the white balance is off. Also, the oof-rendering is super-ugly: what lens was it?
