I'm looking at getting a film scanner to import my film (all negatives) into the digital era. Was thinking about the DiMAGE Scan Dual IV, any of you have experience with this one? Any good alternatives under $500? :D

I think you can't go very wrong with the SD4. I believe many here on RFF use one. I myself have the previous model, SD3, and have been very pleased with it all this time, though having gone the dRF way the SD3 doesn't see much action nowadays.

I have the Dual IV and love it. All my pics in the gallery here, and on my analog blog (http://analog.lifekapptured.com/) were scanned with it.

Probably a good choice. Read Ken Rockwell's scanner pages first though:

I have an SD IV and have owned a SD III. I think they're great. I use Vuescan under Linux, works a treat for me. The next step up in quality is steep - but includes digital ICE for removing scratches. So I see the SD IV as a plateau that is a good stopping point if your budget is under $500 as you say. The Nikons are great and prolly worth every cent they go for - they just go for more.

I have a Dual Scan IV, and am very pleased with the scans ((I configure the scannner to save at the highest resolution). The DS IV has a peak resolution of 3200 dpi; newer versions go up to 5400 dpi. Anyway, a good deal at around 200 USD.

Latest Shutterbug has a review of the DS IV.

The DS IV is a fine scanner for traditional silver-particle film such as most B&W. If you have a lot of non-Kodachrome slides or C-41 colour negatives, then a scanner with Digital ICE is worth the extra cost.
