Over the next few days we will be performing some upgrades to RFF. This means that RFF may be unavailable at times. Also, once the system is up and running again, the look will be slightly different and some customizations will be needed afterwards. Please be patient while we work on improving RFF for you.

thanks for the update and advance warning.

is this the 'go buy a book' sort of downtime...or 'buy a mag' downtime?

Wondering that too, if I'll suffer cold turkey or it'll be back online before the withdrawal effects kick in :D

Yeah...it's back to 'our old friend'.

Ain't broke - don't fix...!!

.

For security reasons (for example) you have to upgrade the base software from time to time. I assume that there are no patches available for this base software anymore.

Whenever there is an "upgrade", you can bet the house that posts and preferences will get lost.

Well, yeah, looks like it but maybe they're still synchronizing stuff...?

If something is working fine, why to improve it?

A number of issues might need addressing, none of them normally visible to users.

Imagine doing all this by snail mail and telephone ;) Upgrades are only somewhat easy when you stay reasonably up to date. Skip a few versions and you're in for a whole world of trouble. At head-fi.org they did a big migration recently that went pretty smoothly, and the new possibilities really enrich the experience. However, I get the feeling they have a bit more commercial support to leverage a bigger team to get this sort of thing done right.

Can't wait for the newer software
Progress is good.
From the small glimpse I had....I'm cool with it. New features, faster load time.
After all, the old software may not be supported anymore from the developer.
Good Try..
Sounds like a few late night coding parties are on the board. ;)

The 1960 VW car worked well, so why did VW develop newer cars? :D
There has to be a good reason for this upgrade ay RFF.

Security might be the ultimate reason. We don't want some trojan creeping in the back door and destroying the RFF database, do we?

Not a matter of 'ain't broke, don't fix' but more of 'to reduce chance on broke, fix now'.

Every two years or so I have the RFF software updated.

Its a combination of factors:

1) to use software which is still supported by its maker - unknown things can happen and will need solutions
2) to add new features
3) improved security
4) these 3 factors combine to keep RFF up and running long term.

Bad luck guys!

Actually I though it was quite fun ... I'd been away overnight at the GF's place who doesn't have electricity let alone a computer ... got home and logged on to the 'show!'

It did prove a couple of things to me ... there are some ****ing whingers here and too many people don't read posts explaining what's happening before they vent their feelings!

If I was Stephen ... next time the upgrade is attempted I'd just shut the whole thing down for a few days and let them deal with THAT!

The good thing is that all that stuff that happened last night (my time) including the crazy posts has all evaporated into cyberspace!

Even all the PMs I made with another member during that period have vanished!

We view process as overrated here. Otherwise, we'd all be talking about the auto-everything D-X000 with the 18-250 lens.

Whew, I thought it was me!

I told myself that I needed to stay away from camera-related sites for a while because they give me GAS.

Then, I sneaked onto RFF and it was down! I thought, "Man, I've done it now."

Hope the upgrade goes better next try.

(This site is so good I cannot stay away, even when I need to.)

Well, I wish them luck (again – I made a blog post to that effect on the upgraded site that has gone into the bit-bucket) on the next go with upgrading. And I hope the whinging is minimal. It's ridiculous, the impatience and zero-pain-threshhold of some folks...

I tuned in last night only to be greeted by the Apache "Nothing to see here" page. I thought Prince had been proven right (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/07/07/prince-the-internets-comp_n_636411.html), and that the internet was indeed over.

I wish the guys better luck next time. RFF is a gift to us all, and if Stephen and co. need to perform upgrades to keep it running, well I for one can tolerate that. Even if something is working at present doesn't mean it will in a ever changing world and environment. Our own requirements change in tune with our surroundings. Even if there was nothing wrong with the Beetle, VW could not upgrade it to meet new requirements, we the user's requirements (better safety, better fuel economy, better sound proofing, larger boot space, the list goes on) took care of that. The analogy doesn't work, sorry.

good luck for next try. one more reason to justify regular upgrades is that longer you let system age and accumulate "stuff", there might become a point where it is not feasible upgrade it at all.

There was an upgrade?
Seriously - I had so much stuff going on this past weekend that I may have run myself down a bit - so.. I honestly didn't notice that the site was offline.

Cheers,
Dave

Updates suck! But, I never do them live. Always on a development server, and only take them live when they work properly.

Is anyone else having trouble posting to the Trades category of the classifieds? I'm having an issue on step 2 where the category select box is blank. I dumped cache and cookies and re-logged in but that didn't make a difference. FF or IE have the same problem. Thanks!

I was going door to door, seeing who stole my internet.

Then a model, a few doors down showed me it was working - she showed me her soft core gallery she models for. Then I realized the internet was still there.

She even gave me a cookie, and a free trial on the site her stuff is on - just email temphoto@zivity.com for the trial ...

Bad luck guys!

The upgrade is making haste slowly. We found some software incompatibility problems that we did not expect.

However, eventually we will get there.
