so I have this summaron f3.5 (m-mount, no goggles) with the 35mm finder, this is obviously the M3 version, as it brings up the 50mm lines on my M2 and M4 and actually came with an M3 and the finder :D .
now, I don't want the M3, neither do I need it and, apart from all that, it doesn't even work... long story short, in which part of it do I have to ram a chainsaw in order to give me the 35mm lines?

(I tried the forum search but that thing just doesn't like me.)

Simon, the M3 doesn't have 35mm framelines. You can make do with the external 35mm finder. If that's not satisfactory, then that's what the M2 is for. :)

The M3 version has goggles. If as you say, the Summaron brings up 50mm framelines in your M2 and M4, then I suspect it may the the goggled version with the goggles lopped off. Any indications that may be the case?

doug,
I know the M3 doesn't have 35mm framelines, as I said, I don't want to use it on the M3, but on the M2 and M4 (I have been using the EVF on those so far, but it seems a bit stupid to me if I could have the correct framelines showing up instead :D ).
I'm pretty sure it never had goggles, it seems to focus correctly as well. it's not the 2.8 version, but this one: http://photovillage.com/images/T/65-35.35.1181174-1.jpg (http://photovillage.com/images/T/65-35.35.1181174-1.jpg)
(the M2 version would look like that afaik http://www.carmarthencameras.co.uk/shopimages/products/normal/IMG_1234CS1667.JPG )

Simon,
I have the 2.8 version which only brought up the 50 Frameline
so I took the back mount off (my version has the red dot on the back mount)
then screwed on a leica 35 adapter / No Chain Saw Needed :p
and MAGIC ...it now brings up the 35 Frameline

LOVE both versions the 3.5 & 2.8...it draws Superbly Sharp and has Wonderful Character

Best- H

I seemed to remember a post on here showing exactly what needed filing down but I'm not sure I've found it.

This gives a link to pictures showing how to file down a Summicron C 40mm

And this has some general discussion about what actually activates the framelines that might help

I think I read about an M mount version of the 35f3.5 Summaron made that had no goggles. It was meant to be scale focused and used on the M3 with the external viewfinder.
I'm not sure if there was a RF cam on the lens at all.
You may have this version. I don't think it was very common.

there is absolutely no sign of goggles on it and I've seen photos of specimens exactly like mine online. it is rangefinder coupled, despite the external viewfinder to go with it.
the collapsible summicron 5cm / summaron 3.5cm hood fits this version perfectly too. s/n is 11760xx

Simon, can you compare the mounting flange of another 35mm lens with your summaron? Are there any difference?

I did the filing (with a nail file :D ) and now it brings up the 35mm lines. yeehaw. took me about 5 minutes and a wee little bit is already enough, really!

thanks again.

Is it just file down the corner a tiny bit?

The M-mount 35mm Summaron f:3.5 originally issued when the M3 came out had no goggles and brought up the 50mm frame lines. It focuses fine with the M3 rangefinder and was meant to be used with the external viewfinder. Later, when the M2 came out I suspect, the Summaron was changed to bring up the 35mm/135mm frame lines. On the M2, that means just the 35mm frame line.

I guess the transition operation is easy, based on the above report.
