View Full Version : Nokton 40/1.4 photos, please
I didnt see a thread for images from Nokton 40mm lens, so why not start one - after all it's a good lens at a great price. I dont have many from mine yet, but hope other users of it will add some here.

Only had my Nokton SC for a couple of months and it is a god performer. I went shooting again at the weekend with it and although I got some good shots I'm not sure about the focal length (60mm) on the RD1. I seem to have a problem framing with it, often finding my compositions leaning to one side. Odd really as i don't tend to have this problem with my other CV lenses. Most likely my poor framing than anything to do with the lens, so maybe I need more practice with it.. I can't see me shooting this as my standard lens on the RD1 although I know many do. I normally shoot a CV 28/2 Ultron. A lens well worth the money though.

Your M6 does in fact have 40mm framelines, for the "35mm" framelines are closer to 40mm (especially when the subject is near the camera).

Great photos, everyone!. I'm really surprised that Cosina made a 35/1.4 and is able to sell it - as good as CV 40/1.4 is and much cheaper too. Oh, I know - it's the HUGE difference between 35mm and 40mm, right?
Well, the 35/1.4 Nokton has one more element than the 40, so presumably more expensive to make. And, more recently introduced CV lenses have generally been more expensive than previous lenses. The 35 is more recent than the 40...

The more I look at photos I get from my Nokton 40, the more it reminds me of Summicron Rigid I used to have, just with more flare control and maybe not quite as sharp.

I like the results from this little lens as well as its looks and diminutive size/weight, although frankly I am not too fond of its handling and focusing. I guess I've struggled getting used to tab focusing. All shot with my R3A:

One of my favourite shots of late, taken on Rollei Pan 25 film, in Whitstable Harbour. If it wasn't for the modern cars and buildings at the back, this would to me have a timeless quality, and I especially love how the shadow detail's been caught.

Slightly off track, but does anyone have a problem with this lens binding as it is focused? I have an early MC one and if I try to focus with just the tab, it binds. It works fine with two fingers. Any suggestions?
...I have an early MC one and if I try to focus with just the tab, it binds. It works fine with two fingers. Any suggestions?I'm reminded that the first run of 500 copies of the MC version were quickly sold out in Japan but there were complaints of stiff focusing. There was some discussion about it here as I recall, so a search should dig up the threads. Some reported that they'd "exercise" the focusing while sitting watching TV and the focusing action eventually eased up.

I had previously taken a photo of her from the other side of the table, so it was already focused.
Right before she took the photo, she said: "This is the one where you press half way to focus, right?", mistaking my bessa for the GR1s

Forgive my ignorance or if I post this on the wrong place but I'm interested and intended in buying my first RF(R3A)along with a Nokton 40/1.4.What is the the main difference in results between the SC and the MC version? In both color and B&W.I will like to know,I'm mainly after B&W photos, the sharpest possible,I like contrast and nice bokeh, but that is a second, priority is sharpness.
Thanks in advance,
Robert

Robert, if you want good contrast, get the MC version; the SC has lower overall contrast due to the single layer of coatings. I personally find the bokeh of this lens a bit "busy" but some folks like it. Sometimes I like it...but not always. Picture to follow.
Jeff
I generally like this lens, but as my reply to Robert indicated, the bokeh can be a bit busy at times. Here's a shot with my M8.2 that demonstrates the bokeh.

From the CV Lens Info section on the CameraQuest site:
"Cosina introduced TWO versions of the 40/1.4 at Photokina 2004. The standard production version is the multi-coated Nokton Classic. The limited production version for the Japanese home market is the 40/1.4 S.C. This is where it gets confusing. Cosina already makes multi-coated SC lenses (no periods) in classic Nikon Rangefinder mount. The 40/1.4 S.C. stands for "Single Coated". Why you ask? Because there is more to photographic imagery than super sharpness and the best possible lens test results. Some Japanese photogs prefer the imagery of single coated lenses to multi-coated lenses, and so this limited edition version of 500 40/1.4 S.C. lenses. The first production run of the single coated 40/1.4 was a quick sell out in the Japanese home market. The 2nd production 40/1.4 SC lenses arrived 3/31/2005."
I have the sc version and find it to be an excellent lens.

Bob

Love this lens, it's pretty much (for me) a perfect all-around lens. Pics were posted on another thread.
All taken with the MC version of the lens, and Ektar 100.

Silent1, you have taken many shots that show great bokeh from the Nokton that others have not been successful in achieving. Is it a distance thing?
That really does look very nice! Nice separation, lovely background.
Thanks Double Negative, the background looks like a poster or a painting but was - in fact - a real airplane!
Silent1, you have taken many shots that show great bokeh from the Nokton that others have not been successful in achieving. Is it a distance thing?
I'm not sure whether or not close distance to subject helps in achieving a nice bokeh. Of course the closer is your subject the blurrier will be your background, but in my personal experience I'm quite satisfied with 40mm's bokeh in most situations: I've never seen those infamous double-edged blurred objects in the background, and the shiny edges in circular out-of-focus point of lights are no worse than - say - my Summicron 50mm.
Cheers

I had the SC with my R3A; both were traded away towards (if I recall correctly) a Pentax 645N set-up. While I didn't miss the R3A overly, I did the little Nokton; and now I have another one as a day-to-day companion for my M3.

This is pretty surreal, do you know her? She's in my class and was only in Rome for a few days on holiday.
Really? No I don't know her. I spotted her on my way to the subway and thought she was too beautiful to go away without taking a photo of her, but I was too shy to ask and I was walking around for too much time to be able to finally ask for a picture so I just took one and walked away.
Hope she's not mad for that :)

My jury is still out on the CV 40mm. I got it to shoot wide open as a I have excellent Zeiss 35mm f2.0. I seem to be giving up quite of bit of resolution from the Biogon at f2.0 to the Nokton at f1.4. Now I did not expect them to be the same as the Nokton is twice as fast and 1/3 the cost but the tradeoff wide open is more than I expected. They are probably very close at f4 but that is not what I got the Nokton for.
Still, the Nokton is getting by and saving me from pushing film another stop.
Sorry, these have been posted here in other posts. But this series on religion is what I got the Nokton to do.

Filmfan: were you not trying to decide between the 40mm and 35mm Noktons? Did you do any research? I simply bought the 40mm because one came along at the right price.
I would consider the 35mm f1.4 Nokton if the wide open resolution was substantially better. Would use it primarily wide open. And I do prefer the wider field of view. I do not care anything about distortion or boken. Can deal with contrast. Only the wide open sharpness counts.

The 40mm looks like it has better bokeh, less distortion, and is cheaper. A few of these characteristics are demonstrated very well in your shots.

Long time no see!
Here are some Nokton 40mm pictures from my first roll developed in Xtol. It is a Kodak Tri-X 400 rated at box speed. I may have screwed up the development process since when I opened the tank I realized that the reel was no longer placed at the bottom of the tank - I was so stupid not to put a second empty reel on top of the other one, thinking that it wouldn't move during the inversion because it looked like it was stuck enough... Anyways, the negative does appear kinda thin to be honest, maybe because it didn't get all the developer and/or fixer strength? But I can't say I'm completely disappointed by the results. In fact, I sort of like it, and grain is almost invisible! A big step forward compared to other developers such as HC110 and Rodinal. Can't wait to try again, this time with a proper development process!

Bump for the awesome 40/1.4 SC.
I like your results from Xtol, Silent. I have only ever used HC-110 as it is so convenient and I am used to it, but I should try others.
This lens is so good I am starting to wonder if I will ever get a second lens for my bessa . Some from yesterday.

Yes HC110 is a very convenient developer and it's got almost infinite shell life. But it must be used with extra care with respect to temperature, dilution, time. I got mixed results with it. I've read around that by using higher dilution (dil H for example) those variables could be mitigated somehow. Will try when I finish my Xtol stock :)

Thank you. I love HC-110. I always use it at dilution E and never at dilution B even when B is recommended. My setup and discipline is not the best so I like the slightly more relaxed approach I can take when using E. I have never tried H, but may some day.

In many ways the 40 mm Nokton is an almost perfect lens. It can substitute for either a 35 (a step back) - or a 50 ( a step forward). It is my preferred one camera/one lens kit - usually a M2 and Trix. I think the Sienna shot was done with a SC version, but either MC or SC works just as well.

Just getting used to using a rangefinder. This is one of my first images with Nokton 40mm 1.4. Its the only lens I have at the moment but I really like it.
http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5325/7384808850_0992799242_z.jpg
I went to London for a short trip and brought my CLE and Nokton 40mm along.
Shot some 4 color rolls, too bad the lab screwed up the processing: all rolls turned out severely underdeveloped. I was able to save some pictures though, by heavily tweaking the contrast and curves and noise suppression on Lightroom, at the expense of dynamic range and shadow details.
Here are some:
