View Full Version : 35mm f/1.4 Nokton Images
I'll start it off.. Now, I sometimes crop if I can't get close enough...
I used Fuji Acros 100 at ISO/100... Indoors, with this lens, the box speed is great.. but on a sunny day, as seen below, I'd should have rated it at ISO/160 to combat the contrast. It is contrasty on bright days for sure.

Shows you nicely what the lens can do, IMO. This is the MC version.
Roland.
I think it would be nice to have just one thread - this way one doesnt have to look for all the shorter ones. I wish there was a way to combine them all into one.

Um, is this only for SC images now? Should I delete my post with photos taken with my MC?

Actually, no.
If you want to overcome contrast, overexpose (64 or 50) and underdevelop. Underexposing in broad daylight will make your pictures even more contrasty because they will lack shadow details.

Yeah... still thinking Digital terms.... Thanks for the advice...
FWIW: I am now shooting slide film to help my brain stay consistent in EV adjustments from my DSLR to M5.....

No, Do Post Maggieo, any f/stop, any any data you have of the shot you may want to post too.
Well, the older part of this combined thread was asking only for SC pics so we can assume the first 4 posts are with the SC lens; the later part didn't specify.
I think it's useful to mention in your post whether the pics are from the SC lens or MC lens, then we can get a better idea of the difference the coating makes.

I posted this on the beer thread (http://www.rangefinderforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=91385) as well but thought it's worth posting here for colour rendition from the SC version. I was not really sure if it would be as good as the MC but wanted the SC for black and white. As you can see there was nothing to worry about. :D

Leaves and small light sources make for a tough test for most lenses, especially if shot wide open. stupid leica, is your first one stopped down a ways (as the bokeh there looks much better to me than the other two shots)?

Wide open @1/30 probably. I think I underexposed by about a stop and a half. It almost looks like that iPhoney app with the classic camera simulator. :D

It's there throughout the range really, but not always so noticeable and even less often disturbing.

For high contrast you downrate to 50 and cut development 20%. This gives the you the ability to expose longer to get more shadow detail and the highlights do not blow from overexposure.

This lens gets a bad rap often but I think that's mostly
from people who haven't used it but saw some "test" on the internet that proclaimed it a bad lens. I always thought it was a very capable lens and a screaming bargain!

I had my SC for about 2 yrs and the damn circular flare issue always annoyed me, even though it was pretty much predictable and didn't show up often. I traded it for a Kowa Six kit with some lenses, but after not adapting well to the camera (and it had an annoying focus shift I didn't want to spend to fix) it came back to me. After trying other 35mm lenses (even an MC) and looking back at photos I did with the lens, I decided to give it a second chance, it's now everyday in my bag mounted on a Hexar RF. it's quite a versatile combo (i shoot 800 iso color film).
The speed, size and price are really hard to beat.
vs the MC, I felt almost no difference, really, the MC tones felt a bit more contrasty but the difference was very, very subtle. same round flare.
vs the 1.7 Ultron, it's considerably shorter and a tad faster, also it gets backgrounds a bit more blurred. the bokeh on the Ultron is more neutral, won't bring as much attention to itself. light balls on the Ultron won't have much brighter edges as the Nokton's. incredibly resistant to flare, even without the hood (never got any flare with it, actually).
vs the 1.2, it is much, much, much more discrete on the street, smaller, lighter and easy to carry (sometimes i split lens and body and have them on coat pockets so i can take the camera somewhere with no bag at all). the 1.2 bokeh is much, much smoother and neutral than the 1.4's. light balls sometimes are incomplete (like a crescent moon, missing a corner), which is not a complaint, i like it, but the bullseye rings in them kind of annoy me a bit in certain situations. the 1.2 feels more robust, but still I like the 1.4's smoothness in both focus and aperture rings, never shot at a wrong aperture due to its smoothness. the 1.2 is very resistant to flare, and i shoot without the hood always.
vs the v4 summicron, it's just a bit heavier but the size is pretty much the same. I've found the v4 to get a purple polygonal line flare in certain angles against the sun without the hood (of course, that's what they're for!), which sometimes can be annoying, but nowadays I only use it with the square hood and didn't have many flare issues. but that made me see the round flare with different eyes also, as it won't compromise images as much as this polygonal kind of flare.
i've bought an f2 canon 35mm also, but haven't received it yet from a friend, I'll post my impressions afterwards.

Where'd you get the SC?
Ebay. Paid a little too much but they are impossible to find right now.
MC Version on a Leica M2. My favorite walk-around lens.

This is not lens distortion - these buildings are actually curved! Lens is very sharp, though.

Thanks Umcelinho. I couldn't really see those colors on the street at all. They came from a neon lit window display and I was surprised with the results. My pup, Billie was just spayed...she isn't too fond of this photo ;)

No offense to the photographers and not trying to start a war... just perused the photos here quickly and, being honest, not a fan of the signature of this lens - or somefin. Something off, somewhat harsh - or something, about them. Hard to put my finger on.

Maybe a poor choice of words. Let's stick with can't put my finger on it. Harsh may be too harsh... These lenses definitely have their own look. Something a "little off" after seeing a bunch of them. I know nothing about these lenses, other than they exist... praise/criticism/reputation - I have no knowledge, and no predisposition. Not awful, don't hate them, but I find some of the rendering a tad displeasing for reasons I can't articulate.
Could also be one lens of the group. Didn't really check. Some photos look okay - non descript. Most of the black and white ones. Shows up more in some of the color ones to my eye.

The Voigtlander Nokton Classic 35 f/1.4 is a great walkaround lens. I used this lens while traveling through Guatemala and Belize and left the heavier, larger Summilux ASPH 35 at home. Paired with the Leica M8, I was very happy with the quality of photographs.

About this photo: Antigua is a bustling city in Guatemala, Central America. A boy sits with his family in the protective shade away from the scorching heat. Nearby shopkeepers spray water onto the city streets to keep the dust from blowing into their stores, and a young couple walks by enjoying a mid-day beer.

One of the nice things about this lens is that it lets you get a bit closer than the earlier Leica 35's and my Canon 35/2.

I had only read Tom A.'s opinion of this lens, which is high; that was good enough for me. What are the general complaints about it? [I know I could search the web for this but that wouldn't be as socially satisfying as asking you all....]

not the sharpest lens i own but the one that gives me a "classic" look thats still plenty sharp...after much debate and several weeks renting a pre-asph summilux, i decided that i preferred the nokton.
its become a favorite lens both for its size and the look it yields.
the images below were shot with my 35 nokton classic mc and m8. processed in lr4.

I have such a love/hate relationship wih this lens. I love how it handles, its compactness+speed, but the circular reflex it can have sometimes - just as the pre-asph lux does - drives me nuts :( how I wish it didn't! still, it's probably the lens that I've used the most.

Here's four shots from my most recent roll. M4-P, New Portra 400.
The last shot illustrates the barreling out that drives some people crazy--doesn't really get me that bad.
First shot is either f/2 or f/1.7--It don't notice the lens going all glowy until I hit f/1.4 proper; in my experience, f/2 is generally safe in that regard.
Also, I tend to think the bokeh cleans up somewhat at f/2 as well; however, this may be based on circumstantial evidence.

Leica M2, Nokton 35mm f1.4 SC - at f1.4 and 1/60s. This is with Kodak Double X, rated at 400 iso and developed in Td 201 two bath developer. About a 30% crop from the full negative.
Question to whom it may concern: do you all actually compose with the focus shift when you stop down from F/1.8 to F/5.6, or you never bother compensating it manually, and rather rely on the increased depth of field to have your subject in focus (or almost in focus)?
Here is a humble shot at F/1.4, on Tri-X 400 + cold Rodinal 1+100 (80 min). It's not really sharp, but I only acquired the lens a month ago and I have not used only this lens on my rolls since then so I'm not really sure whether it's a focusing issue (with the need to recalibrate the rangefinder) or just softness at F/1.4 (if anyone has an opinion here, it's welcome):
http://mathieu.laparie.perso.neuf.fr/Documents%20divers/scan0215s.jpg
I've got a bug in Lightroom and Photoshop that I have not solved yet, so the rendering is not exactly what I wanted (the guy on the left looks like a grey chart for white balance, seriously): for instance in Photoshop, any change I try to apply is actually previewed, but can't be applied.

I haven't worried about focus shift. Its a 35mm lens so stopping it down gives me enough dof to ignore it.
Frankly, rangefinder calibration and imprecision on my part focusing due to parallax are more likely to be a source of problems shift with this lens.

Only at close focus. At longer distances there is no practical problem.

I really do wonder about these people that claim it's not a sharp lens, wide open?
Cris, I've compared quickly my 35/1.4 SC to a v4 35mm Summicron, a 35/1.2 Nokton and a 35/1.7 Ultron, they were all sharper wide open than the 35/1.4 copy I had.
But shooting it by itself, without comparing, it's sharp enough.
I think it's more of a matter of signature, size, speed... for instance, the 50/1.5 C-Sonnar isn't as sharp as a 50/1.5 Nokton wide open, the difference is big, but then you have a tiny fast 50 with a peculiar signature and a big(-ish) fast 50 that is razor sharp and has a very neutral drawing.
That said, the 35/1.4 SC Nokton is probably the lens I have shot with the most, and kinda miss it for its speed and size. Your compact hood makes it an even more tempting lens, but then I shoot with the 35/1.7 Ultron and I think again, it's a better lens overall.

I haven't encountered any focus shift yet, perhaps thats my lack of technical expertise showing itself though!?
Only at close focus. At longer distances there is no practical problem.
And thanks to all of you for your replies. When do you consider focus is "close" enough to start worrying about the shift, ~ 1 m, 2 m?

i bought this as a starter lens...and never liked it very much. I ended up selling it as soon as i got my 40mm Summicron...didn't like the mechanics or the rendering very much. I had the MC....perhaps the SC is better?

A shot at 1.4 from the SC on Tri X at 250 and pulled. I was shooting around 1/60th so it could be slightly sharper but the look is interesting. Focus was on the rear tire lettering:

I was in Seattle in April with my wife. I'm still new to rangefinders and this lens, but I'm having fun with both.

Silvercall- welcome to the forum. To insert an image from flickr, just copy the url of its location and then click on the "insert image" icon on the message composition window (it looks like a little picture of sun and hills).
The URL will then authomatically be bookended by tags. Like this:

By the way, your image is clear proof that the Nokton 35 1.4 is a terrible lens for architecture...look at all those curved lines!

I've been a member here for a bit but have never had a chance to post anything. This thread is what led me to this lens in the first place. By the way, i swear those buildings were straight as an arrow... ;)

Just bought this lens, and went with my girlfriend to Golden Gate Park this weekend to try it out. Shot a roll of Tri-X, developed in HC-110 B, and I'm absolutely blown away by the Nokton. For the price, it's a stunning lens. A few pics:
