I didn't see that post but Porter's http://www.porters.com/ sells, or at least used to sell an instrument that will take dents out of the rim.

If you're talking about the lens filter ring, MicroTools has a tool to straighten various sizes of filter rings (http://www.micro-tools.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=MT&Product_Code=LR). There was also a "wooden hammer tool" type thing listed right under it to be used with it I think. Another buck and a half. Good luck! Let us know how it works.
