Before sending off your print, how about a "Camera & Print" shot akin to Camera & Coffee? A snap of your swap print with the camera that shot it...
Or, it could be I'm one of the few who hasn't yet shipped off his print... :(

I never imagined that it would be so difficult to send a print to somebody.
I wasted the first few days to search for the negativ. After the darkroom
session I wasn't statisfied with the print ... so next negativ, next session ...
But now I send a really valuable print :-) , because of the mail rates. I hope
Marc likes it just a little bit. ;-)
How short 2 weeks can be ...
/rudi
Yeah, I just finished printing last night, but I'm not so sure whether I'm really satisfied with the print - gonna try again today, since I don't have to work, and Nicole is not here - I guess Joe is not going to mind one more day of waiting anyway (since he is used to Canadian mail service delivery times ;) )
Roman
since he is used to Canadian mail service delivery times ;)
Hope Marc is also patient :-) ... I saved the money for airservice, would have been another 15 Euro or so.
Maybe we should change the format to 2x3 cm so we can put our images as stamps on a postcard :-).

Whee -- first pair is mid-swap as we speak. Earlier this week I received T_om's incredibly sharp "The Cheshire Cat," and today I sent him my print in return.
The Camera and Print pic is a great idea, Doug. But I didn't read it until I returned from the PO, so here's a pic of T_om's print (propped up), a test print of mine (untitled; maybe "Big Bad Elf"?) and the Canon 7s w/ CV 35/2.5 it was taken with.
In ironic tribute to the Kodak job cuts thread, my crummy Kodak digital P&S/POS died today, so I apologize for scarring your eyes with the camera-phone pic.
Camera and Prints pic, taken with Motorola V300 -- 0.3 megapixels, baby!

Yay, I just sent off a couple prints to Remy, 4-7 day theoretical postage to holland was only $3.50!

Another pair in "mid-swap". I just returned from the post office. I used Canada Post regular service to send it to Rudi (24x30) in Germany. I was told it should get there in a week or a week and a half.
Glad Rick (Stet) got his print from me in good shape. Alan, yours should arrive soon.
Looking forward to getting mine now!

no worries roman,
i just picked up the 3rd print i had made and finally got the dimensions right but there were 2 marks on the bottom of the print.
it seems after working on the neg/scan/file for 3 nights i missed them.
i could scream/cry but i'll just turn on photoshop and clean it again.
soon my friend, soon.

My neg has been in the hands of the lab for a couple days, and their estimate for completion of this "exhibition quality" print was about a week. I asked for a second one for myself, and I do wonder how it will come out, and what effect my instructions might have! I don't know the cost either...
My lab screwed up last weekend. It's holiday season so my regular operator isn't there. The current no-goods don't know the difference between their fingers and their toes.
Had to go to a new lab, which comes recommended by my local photo shop. I have no idea how the print will end up.
Tetrisattack, I hope to have the print sent off to you soon!

No worries, this is supposed to be fun. :)
Then again, reading through folks' horror stories, I feel almost guilty for having had the luxury of doing my own darkroom work.
The seller of the Canon G5 just wrote me an e-mail that he received my money and sent off the camera yesterday, , so it won't be here before the middle of next week, and I wanted to send of the print to Joe today, and don't have another digital - but'll make a picture of the camera and one of the work prints and post it here.

how are people mailing their prints?
i was thinking of using a tube mailer.
joe
how are people mailing their prints?
I used a tube, and had to pay an extra bonus of 1,5 Euro for using a round
device :-). Funny, isn't it? I thought of a big letter with a stiff back, but this
would have cost the same like a tube.
I'll take place in the next swap again, even if the price for my prints is increased
(10 times what the print itself costs) by the mail costs.
/rudi
I used a cardboard envelope from photo paper, stuffed with some extra cardboard and bubble foil. Actually, shipping was not expensive at all, 6 or 7 Euros for 'Priority mail' to Canada.

I used a Canada Post photo envelope. I added a Masonite board the lab had given me (they were out of 8x12 carboard). It'll take some serious effort to bend this one! It cost me 8.75$CAN for the envelope and shipping to Germany. Not bad.
I used a tube that I picked up at the post office. I believe it was $2.19 for the tube, and not much at all for regular first-class mailing, but that was for Arkansas to Florida.

I mailed mine sandwiched between two pieces of 11"x14" corrugated cardboard. (Like what you would cut from the side of a large box.)
The prints I sent were mounted anyway, so they had that small bit of additional protection.
Glad to hear that both Rick and Alan's prints arrived safely.

joe
Yes. It has writing saying something like"don't bend..." It's made of what felt like 10 or 12 point cardboard so it's really not "bend proof". The label says it's made for 9x12" documents but my 8x12" picture was a bit too long so I had to cheat a bit to seal the envelope.

thanks marc.
joe
Joe,
don't worry too much about dust - I did not spot my print for you (I'm really bad at spotting - usually, the print looks worse afterwards...), so you might find 2 or 3 spot marks on it (but the small kind, that you notice only after the print has dried and you are looking at it in daylight...
Roman
Rick,
The "Elf" photo made it just fine. Thanks!
Tom
Darn! Going to send my print back to the lab for redo. They did not follow my specific cropping instructions, though I can tell that the person who scanned the neg and did the PS work knew what I wanted. Nice 4000 dpi scan from 6x4.5 neg, 23.5 Mb jpeg! But the printer just crammed the image into the dimensions of the paper, cropping some of the bottom off by necessity.
Gabriel M.A.
07-26-2005, 17:45
I had the lab redo my prints three times already, and the last time it looked ok, when dag nabbit, they forgot to add the white border. So, (tu sais qui)...your prints are going out tomorrow, no more delays. The ProEx guys felt so bad they gave me the prints at half price, so it worked out.
Summer provides lots of bumps for printing large prints!! Not only are we on vacation, but so are our trusted lab printer operators.
Tom --nice, I'm glad it got there fine. I was wondering about all the confirmation and other add-on postage, then skipped it all.
mikebrice, I with you. I feel really lucky and welcomed about being in the swap and being paired with T_om, but feel a little unworthy to dance in these circles. I had fun doing it, but I'll impatiently sit these out for a while.

I feel the same. My printing skills are non-existent so I have my prints done by a local lab on (aargh) Fuji paper.
Gabrielma has a good point. Summer time is NOT a good time to have custom prints done, especially when your personal operator is on holiday.
Yesterday I got Tetrisattack's prints. They're wonderful! He curtiously sent two(!) prints, and both are lovely. I'm not sure but I think you finally figured out how to get the heart to show up well on the wall, didn't you Conor? :)
My print is on its way.

I like it, he send me his print on those metallic (Kodak Endura) paper.
Hope he will get mine in time.

Don't worry, I got a nice letter with the print from Marc with a lot of info to the print. And I remembered that I just put those print into the roll and wasted the rest of the space and weight I had free.
/rudi
First I heard of anyone sending TWO prints... a personal option I guess since that was not the original proposal.
Those who sent their print flat, maybe Marc is on to something with the use of masonite... Heavy stuff, though it might be worth sandwiching the print between TWO masonite sheets. I just received the matted and mounted print from the opposite corner of the country, and it looks like the UPS driver sat on it the whole way. :(
Beautiful print too! In that third pic below, yep, that's a deep crease along the near edge of the print... :bang:
Any good advice?
Just read the email Doug. OK, I need some help from the experts. I took the print to one of those UPS stores to get the "best service" so that nothing would get screwed up. Now look at those pictures. How do I send a 16x20 across the US and have it arrive in pristine condition?

Hi egpj
what a wonderful endorsement for UPS. Not!! I was thinking of matting and clipping them to 'simple glass and masonite clip frames' not now. I am thinking that I will just roll them into a tube and hopefully my swap partner will too. Obviously your print is creased, the mat is toast and your time effort and goodwill are spoiled by the courier that you paid a premium for service not rendered.
You should send them the photos and ask for a credit to re print and mat again at their cost this time.
Jan
am I being cranky?
You are not near as cranky as I am right now but after I have these next 2 Blue Moon's I will almost be as mellow as you. Cheers!

It may be hard to believe, but I think the US mail would have been a better option. Cheaper to boot.
UPS is known for mangling things with their package handling machines. Most of the stuff I get via UPS look like it was drug here behind the truck. I have had MUCH better luck with the Postal Service. Both the prints I sent in this swap were mounted on foam board and merely sandwiched between two pieces of cardboard. One went to Japan and one to a US address. Both arrived in good shape.

I think that anything larger than 9x12" should be in a tube. I don't trust courrier companies to take good care of my packages. I think they don't care about "fragile", "photo: don't bend" and other warning labels since almost all packages have at least one. They just throw the stuff around, probably with a shovel!
I'm glad Rudi got my print in good condition. I guess masonite is courrier-proof enough. It would have been pretty ridiculous to get a crease in a 8x12" piece of masonite. Imagine the rest of the cargo! :D
BTW, I thought we were supposed to send one print only. I know it was discussed earlier to send two but thought in the end, it was brought back to one.

Marc,
Since we ended up with an odd number of participants, I volunteered to fill in for the "missing" person so I was actually paired with two people, Alan and Rick. So I sent two photos, one to each of them.
Another poster in the thread mentioned sending two shots also, but I believe he sent both to his swap partner. Not sure exactly why, but there was no 'rule' against sending more than one.

Indeed, Tetrisattack sent me two prints. Both of them lovely. I'll move house in a few months and these prints might end up on my walls.
Marc asked me about the camera I used for my print, the Polaroid 600 ...

Hey all, I didn't mean to ruffle any feathers by sending out 2 prints. They were fun to make and cheap in time and material cost so I figured I'd make the postage to holland worthwhile by sending a bonus.
OK, since Joe told me that he has already received my prints, it's time to post my pic of what I sent to him (actually, those are the 'work prints'), and the cameras that took the pictures (I sent the two extras because he wanted something from where I live, and I was not to sure whether he'd like the 'Chair & shadows' pic).

Nice looking selection, Roman!
The swap print from egpj arrived safely today, snug within its styrofoam padding. It's in perfect condition, unlike the first disaster. My own print, returned to the lab for rework, has yet to be delivered to me. Sorry, Glenn, for the delay!
Oh cool! That is OK. I had my own comedy of errors to go through getting your print to you. How did you like that jpg print I made from the email you sent me? I removed the color cast out of the file they sent you and I rather liked it.
Hey Doug, you don't live close to Portland, Oregon? I will be out there on the 14th of this month. I arrive on the evening of the 13th then soend a day before I start driving down along the coast with family. If you do live close then maybe I can correct the grievous error of no signature on the print. Pardon my anxiousness again for wanting to get that print out to you and neglecting that very important detail.
How did you like that jpg print I made from the email you sent me? I removed the color cast out of the file they sent you and I rather liked it.Hi! I had to go back and dig through the peanuts some more to find the smaller print... Looks surprsingly good from such a low resolution jpg, but then that photo doesn't depend strongly on fine detail.
Hey Doug, you don't live close to Portland, Oregon?"Close" is a relative term, but in this context a 5-hour drive (in a direction opposite from your subsequent travel) isn't reasonably close! Too bad... Have a great vacation drive and I hope you capture a lot of great photos.
Yeah but really the only place I saw any breakdown was the interface between the mountains and the sky. That is where it got a little jagged. Everything else seems very sharp. I love the Epson R2400!
Shucks man! I was hoping you'd be close then I could sign that thing for you. If you still have the other then you could cut off the paper part I signed on it. You could just say the artist lacks class. Dooohhh! :bang:
Have a great vacation drive and I hope you capture a lot of great photos.
Thanks, will try to take a bunch. But I have the feeling that everything is going to be very rush, rush. Reserving the rental cars tonight though and it has come together very well so far. Hope the weather cooperates.

I have just received my prints from my ‘trade’ partner gabrielma. I am a lucky boy. Gabriels shots are wonderful.
It’s funny how these events work out. Each of us looks at the work of the subscribers to the thread and subconsciously or not, thinks who they would like to trade with as a partner. There were a lot of potential partners, and like others in this thread, I had some of the ‘usual’ preconceived ideas about whose work I liked.
When paired with gabrielma, I went back and thought; ‘what did his work look like?’ He was obviously not who I had thought about getting paired with. But…. when I looked closely I realized what a great photographer I was paired with. We wrote, fumbled around on coordinating and finally got off the ground.
I have received my print(s) and I’m knocked out. These will definitely not go on some shelf and get dusty. They are going into a ‘high traffic’ location in our apartment. I know people will stop and look, I will too.
Thanks Gabriel, hope you like yours.
Jan
Jan, pithy comments! I think that's a large part of the value of a swap like this. It's likely all of us have photos that most others can "learn to love". And reason to look more closely at the work of at least one other who might not have drawn your eye initially. We can learn from this, and grow better.
We can also learn about our part of the process! Getting the image printed satisfactorily... mounting/matting, packing securely and shipping... All of these can be challenges especially if it's something we don't commonly do.
Your exchange of money concepts I saw on your gallery have stuck with me and it might lead me into something new. Just been mulling them around in my head and wondering how they will influence my shots. :DThanks, Glenn! An example of what Jan mentioned, I think... In fact your grouping them like that makes me consider them anew. I never really considered that a specific project, just part of the "people at work" stuff. But there's certainly something interesting about the exchange of cash for goods... You've helped me now in pondering that, and I may pursue it more specifically.
I'm feeling worse every day, because my roll hasn't reached Marc till today ...
Got everybody else his print already?
/rudi
Well, Rudi, not quite EVERYbody... I received Glenn's, but he hasn't received mine. :( In fact it just came in from the lab today and went directly to the frame shop for matting. Then I'll pack it securely in Glenn's box and ship it off, but that's some days away yet. Don't feel bad!

you really shouldn't worry too much about the delay, I will be away a bit in the next weeks, anyway (going to Lake Balaton, Hungary, to visit Nicole's family for a week, an we're also planning on making a detour to Varazdin, Croatia, to meet fellow RFFer Denis ('denishr') and do some shooting at a street festival there; and in early Sept. we are flying to Copenhagen for a few days), so the print will probably have to stayat the post office for a few days, until I'm back to pick it up...

I were at the shop again, to ask them how long it will take ...
They don't want to give me a max. time for sending. It seems
that Canada lays not in the known world, of the german mail
service.
They suggestet me sending it next time as insured parcel with
airmail and roll adds, etc. Price: 38 Euro ... they must have gone
mad. (Sending paper which costs all incl. about 1 Euro.)

That's ridiculous! It took Canada Post 6 days to deliver my envelope to you and for only 8.75$CAN.
Here's a snap of a copy of the print I sent to Glenn... I had this one framed but it can also be a spare in case the sent one is damaged. Also shown is the Bronica RF645 and 65mm lens that was used to shoot the swap print.
There are reflections on the glass that I had a hard time dealing with, particularly noticeable in the water near the center. I turned the frame a little to the right and had my wife hold a black sheet up behind me.
Shadowed daylight, Canon G3 digicam, EI200, jpeg edited and sized in GraphicConverter.

I guess with Canadian post it migh even take enough time to not arrive before I'm back from Hungary...

I just received my prints (he sent two!) from Alan Soon. Great shots Alan and they made it through the mail just fine.
Alan participated in, and helped organize and manage, this swap even though he is currently going through a move (to another COUNTRY, by the way!). He was also instrumental in getting this swap underway initially. Kudos Alan! Many thanks.
The next print swap, (Print Swap II) will be getting started soon.
Stay tuned to this channel. ;)

Woohoo! Print Swap II!

Sure, it will be open to everyone, same as last time. I will take a look at Print Swap I's match-up and make sure people that participate again are paired with different partners next time, so participate in as many swaps as you like. We intend to have several every year.
I will start the process for PS II in about a week. Joe has kindly offered to make it a sticky when I make the announcement. Also, please remember to sign up THEN, per the instructions posted, not here in this thread.

I'm working on a series shot last Friday that's gonna be to your liking. It'll even be showable here (for a change)! It was a gothic fashion show at the fetish club. "Dark fashion for the vampires, victorian and lolita goth" as they say.
