Taken with Nikkor 45 2.8 ED PC on D3 SB-900 flash bounced off the roof.
No images yet. I'm off to the lab tomorrow. So far I love this lens. The condition was impeccable, it looked brand new. It was shipped and delivered in good time (thanks David) . I didn't know it needed a adaptor to fit on my camera so I scavenged mine from my 15 Voigtlander (which I didn't even know had an adapter :o). The frame lines are perfect on the M7 but not so much on the M6. The focus is silky smooth and the aperture is positive and sure. Sorry for the tease but I've been busy shooting and posting on the NikonCafe. I'll post some images up tomorrow or the next day.

All images taken with Leica M7/M6 (M3 has broken shutter) and the Voigtlander 28 1.9 aspherical. The color images were on Ektar 100 and the B+W were taken on XP2. So far I'm really impressed with this lens and it's been a pleasure shooting with it for the last couple of days. I read some online test of this lens in which the "expert" said that after 5.6 the resolution went downhill fast. Could be but I like shooting at F8/11 and find the results acceptable. The few times I've shot with the lens wide open have given me sharp, clear and contrast-rich images. So I'm happy.

Nice. You might want to check out http://www.rangefinderforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2481. Also, the lens peaks at f5.6 according to Puts.

Thanks. You know, I never put too much stock in what the experts say :p. I like shooting at F8/11 to get the depth of field I need and secondly, many times I can't stop dow to 5.6 when using ISO 400 film so ... what can I say. For me it's about the composition, lighting, mood of the image and of course the moment. If I have to worry about losing resolution at F8/11, I'll just break down and buy the Leica 28 2.0 :D. But for now I'm feeling that the Voigtlander 28 1.9 is a workable solution to the RangeFinder 28 question.

Thanks for the link. I read through it while waiting for my lens to arrive. I hate to be snippy about people that test lenses but in my experience you really need to evaluate several samples of any given lens to be scientific. And so for the sample he tested I'm sure 5.6 was the sweet spot. For mine I'm liking F8/11. And to tell you the truth, I can tell you right now, I've got a good sample. So like I said, I'm happy with my purchace. Again, thanks David for a terrific lens and your care in packing the lens so carefully and getting it to me in such a timely fashion. It was a pleasure doing business with you.
I'll get some more sample images up tomorrow.

Forget what Puts said then :rolleyes:. FWIW, he does rate the lens very highly.
The link was pointing you to another RFF thread where other 28/1.9 enthusiasts (me included) are sharing photos taken with that lens. I had several samples, and love my current copy. Substituting it with a 28/2.0 ASPH would be a waste of money, IMO. In any case, enjoy.

My local lab scanned my neg backwards and left a huge streak across the whole thing. Other than that they did good :).

I personally liked your compositions...you have a very good eye.
The lens composes good too but to my taste it is too sharp and modern...

Thanks for taking the time to look and thanks for the kind words. There is no doubt abut it, the Voigtlander 28 1.9 ASPH is a modern sharp lens optic. And since I was looking for a lens to ride shotgun with my Nikkor 28 1.4 AF D and D3, I'm more than happy. I'm very impressed with its lack of flare and performance and feel. I feel that to get the most out of this lens, I need to start processing my own negs and controlling contrast with pull processing a little more. But for now I'm very pleased with the lens.

I rate the XP2 between 200 and 400, depending on the contrast of the scene. I do notice that this Voigtlander 28 1.9 has plenty of contrast.

Great set of images: a real sense of place and eye for balance in each frame. Thanks for posting, inspires me to get some time in with wider lenses than my usual 50s and 35s.

Thanks Teashop. I'm dropping a dozen rolls of film off at the lab today, so I'll have some new images up in the next day or two, that is, if any turn out ;). I shot several frames @ 1.9 into bright light sources so the results should be interesting.

I enjoyed those photos very much. You've got a good eye! I especially liked the set beginning w/ the cattle -- nice use of the 28 focal length. I'm also impressed by the results you're getting w/ color film. I have to say I really like the look this lens produces, modern or not.
Really nice images again Gregory, especially the final shot of the tractor. You've got a real aptitude for this focal length. To my eye you seem to get the optimum balance of subject size to background in each frame (which is where I've always fallen short with wider lenses). Great stuff, and conveys the feeling that I'm standing in Alberta looking at the scene directly. Thanks for posting these.

The more I use this lens, the better I like it. So far it's performed without fail. It's great when you get a piece of equipment that outdelivers your expectations.

I like this lens alot also. However, with my copy at least I find you have to be very careful with flare if the sun is pointing at the lens in anyway.

Defo: Thats interesting about the flare. I found just
the opposite to be true with the Ultron 28 1.9. So thats kind of strange. Perhaps you can post some images on tis thread.

Really enjoyed looking at the photos on this thread. Not sure about your bit of Alberta though - think I'll stay in my valley! But the lens produces some really cracking results, helped by the photographer of course. I'm inspired to
get a 28mm lens now - and I thought I was free of GAS for a bit!

Maggieo: thank you very much. That was taken at Gee Gong in Calgary. I don't get there as much as I would like but it's my favourite restaurant. They've got the meat hanging in the window and the cutting board, well, you can see ... But the food is so good.

thanks ezzie. i think the lens is gonna be a keeper, for sure.
i was going to sell the little cv 28 but now i'm thinking that i will keep it too and pair it with my soon to arrive cv 50/2.5.
it should make a nice sharp, compact kit.

Roland, since you had several samples, how was in your opinion the quality spread between them?
I'm asking because I had one and wasn't quite satisfied with it.
It was significantly softer than my Hex, and I gave up on it.
Given the mixed reviews on the web, including excellent reports, I concluded that QC and sample variance was the issue...

I had 3 so far. One of them went back to the seller since it was off. Similar for the 35/1.7 Ultron, BTW. They also vary in terms of flare. If you check Reid's recent review of the 35 Ultron, he tested one with less flare than his first one.
When you get a good 28/1.9 Ultron, it's one of the sharpest 28 lenses out there. Easily > 100 lp/mm across the field at f4 or so.

I have just developed some shots made with this lens in spring, and I am quite amazed at the quality: great sharpnes across the frame, and gentle tonal gradations within a medium contrast rendering. This one is the favourite of the roll, shot at f 8.0 with a yellow filter:

Well, both your answer and what I see here make me rethink about this lens.
Only problem is that buying, testing and selling one ore more of such lenses untill you find love can be expensive and tricky...
Unless I meet a real need for speed in the future, I think I will manage with the Hex (badly needs a relube. very stiff) and the not-yet-in-my-hands cv 3.5 that is suposed to provide the ultimate compact 28mm combo once screwed on my IIIf :)

Well from my experience with the 28 1.9 ASPH is equally good on the Leica M8/M9 as it is on film Leica's M6/M7/MP.
I know some "experts" :rolleyes:, on line like to mention all the negative things about the 28 1.9 ASPH.
Like it's to big and it's ...OO what ever.. And everyone is entitled to there opinion. Just as I am entitled to ignore them and just using and enjoying the 28 1.9 ASPH :p.
In truth I love reading any and all information about lenes. To me, it's interesting to what other's think, or more precisely how they think . How they test glass. What they feel is important in a lens. To me, that kind of information, it's just interesting.
However there is nothing, I repeat nothing, that even comes close to using a lens for a period of time, under all kinds of lighting conditions, and weather conditons at all kinds of apertures, on both film and digital like I have with "my" copy of thew 28 1.9 ASPH. And from my first hand experience, I can tell you that the 28 1.9 ASPH is "all that" and more.
WIth it's speed and sharpness and feel, it's an exciting lens to use.
I often use the 28 1.9 ASPH on my Leica M film/digital along side of my Nikkor 28 1.4 AF-D ASPH on my Nikon D3/F3T and it more than holds it's own to what I beleive is one of the greastest lenses ever made.

I agree with Gregory. I have used the 1.9 Ultron on the RD-1 for years and now on the M8.2. For me it is the perfect "35mm" on these cameras. I use it without the hood so it is not at all large to me. I think it is very versatile. And it has no focus shift..
