View Full Version : Tips on using the GSN light meter?

Hi All -

I was wondering if my GSN's meter is working properly - or if I'm just not used to it yet. It seems that I can never get the apature set to where the both over/under lights are off. For example, If the red light light on (at the begining of the shutter release 'press') and I adjust the apature so it goes off.. even by one stop, the yellow seems to always light up as I press the shutter release further. I have yet to make an exposure w/o one light or the other on.

My first test roll had mixed results. I can definately see the potential of the lens!

Overall the camera is in good shape - and thanks to all here for all the great advice. i have a feeling I'm on a "slippery slope"... i have a GIII comming soon!

... no, not yet :O Would it cause weird the meter readings? Are you supposed to hear the meter working? I rarely hear it. I foresee some investigation on the POD in my future.

... looks like I'll have to dig into it. I'm sure there have been previous post on the subject. Is it a difficult fix? or should I keep an eye open for another camera altogether.

Definitely sounds like the Pad is Dead. I had exactly the same issue with one of my GSN's; exposures fron a few seconds to the fastest 1/500 in the same lighting conditions, flickering over/under lights.

Have you been doing this in a room or outside? If outside there is the possibility that the sun is making it appear that the yellow light is on when it actually isn't. Try it in a room away from direct sunlight.

It happens indoors. It's kinda hard to explain it. Maybe if I had another GSN to compare it to... ; )

Yes, I'll do that. I hope I can fix it - the camera is in real good shape otherwise.

I bet its the pad too...When I was shooting with the GSN's I took black tape and covered the arrows on the top plate of the camera. It makes it a lot easier to look thru in bright light because I was seeing extra light coming in from the top causing some glare.

Yep. I just fixed one that had the pad problem and it constantly shows under exposed even when i shone a spotlight at the meter.

The pad was easier than i had expected thanks to yashica guy's useful tutorial.
