Congrats to JLW!
And to all the participants, it's a pity there can be only one winner. As well as to Jorge the inventor of the idea, it was a great one I think.

Wow! Thank you ALL very much, and thanks to all the voters!

There were a lot of terrific essays, and I'm very pleased that mine was selected from among such a distinguished group.

Of course, winning is great -- especially winning a new RF camera! -- but what's good for ALL of us is that now we've got a whole collection of persuasive, well-written "literature" of various lengths, styles and sizes.

In thinking about what that means, I like to imagine some young photographer -- maybe someone who's kind of reached a dead end with his/her photography, someone who's tired of lugging around an SLR and a bunch of slow, bulky zoom lenses and of making derivative, "techniquey," emotionally unexpressive photos, but doesn't know what to do about it.

The mainstream, advertiser-driven photo magazines are no help, of course. So this hypothetical person starts Googling around the Internet, and comes across our collection of writings: short ones, long ones, serious ones, funny ones, poetic ones.

"Hey," s/he thinks, "there are a lot of good ideas here. And if these people are so passionate about what kind of camera they use, maybe it's worth checking out."

And eventually an RF camera -- a sleek Leica or Ikon, or a practical Bessa, or an elegant old Canon or character-filled FSU refugee -- finds its way into appreciative new hands. And a few months later, someone who until recently was just another "picture consumer" starts making photographs with clarity, individuality, and vision.

And when that transition comes, we can ALL feel that we've helped.

I'm very proud to have won, and I'm even more proud that we all participated. Again, I'd like to thank Jorge, everyone else who wrote, and everyone who voted, and the RFF community in general.

Best wishes and good shooting to all!

Congrats JLW, good job!

Now can we have another contest, something that doesn't require literary skills.......you know, maybe a coloring contest. I have a new "Big Chief" tablet and box of 8 Crayola's at the ready, just say the word!

Great -- I'll keep an eye out.

Thanks again to everyone for their best wishes. A week from tomorrow I'll be heading out to spend a week in the Nebraska Sandhills, where some friends of mine operate a summer ballet camp at the Halsey National Forest (the world's largest hand-planted forest, incidentally.) This is an exotic little corner of the world, formed of sand dunes like Arabia but anchored in place by grass, mostly ranch country but dotted with towns so small that a dog can sleep in the middle of Main Street all day. I'll definitely take along the RFF camera and a few rolls of Tri-X, and hope to have some cool pictures to post when I get back!

Once again, thanks to everyone for their good wishes!
