I think Micro-Tools offers leather for covering cameras. Another source is to use the material from an old leather jacket.

That's a very nice looking FED-2, BTW.

Cupog! sorry! this is an ebay site in Slovak Republic. I've dealt with him quite a few times, very good service, goods as advertised and very well packed. Sends you a note on the day the goods are posted.

John, if you are looking for a new cover, I can recommend Aki Asahi in Japan. I've recovered an M2 and am waiting for a new cover for my M3. Shipping takes 5 or 6 days to North America. Oh, cost of the Leica covers is $19 including shipping. The covers are precision cut, fit perfectly and are pre-glued.

I would also recommend Aki-Asahi but your FED 2 is the last model with no strap lugs and I don't think he has the template to cut leather for that but email him to make sure. For a sample of his cover, see my post on 2 grey FSUs in this forum. The Zorki 6 is covered with his Leica S-M emboss.

I've sent an e-mail to aki-Asahi so we'll se what happens! Thanks for the help. :)

Hi,
If you get stuck, I can supply some leather. It's calkskin shaved down to 0.5mm. By the end of the week, I should have plain, morocco, levant, sealskin and baby croc embossings. PM me if you are interested.

Regards
Kim

Cameraleather.com has skins to fit that model FED2. I have ordered one in the past, fit and looks were very nice.

Hi,
Just a thought, Aki's kit for the Fed 4b/5 may fit. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=15234&item=3875174760

Add me to the list happy to recommend Aki Ashai. It took me less than ten minutes to dress up my Kiev in lovely new Soviet-red leather. Feels fantastic!

I got nice leather from Tandy leather shops but you have to dig around to find some that is thin enough. Cheap, however.

thanks to all!!, I've just got back from visiting a charity shop where I bought a beautiful fine leather handbag for £1, so tonight will be dressing up time. I hasten to add --for the camera NOT me, -- trust me I would not look good in drag.
Particular thanks to Kim down there in Lincoln. (for the Drag bit, think Nora Batty, you'll know what I mean.)

You know, it seems quite a common practice amongst the FSU crowd, myself included, to go shopping for old purses. ...... hmmm........ I'm starting to wonder if I've gotten into something here that I shouldn't have? What would my retired Army Major Father say? And my brother, the lover of John Deeres and chainsaws?

How could I tell them that last week my wife and I were visiting a friend's second-hand store and my wife says, "I'm going over to check out the purses." And I replied, "Oh! Me too!"

For the love-a-pete, what the heck has happened to me?!! Double-bang!!
:bang: :bang:

and yet --- I can't turn away.

Only worry when we start watching Will and Grace and enjoy it. Or buying the DVD Pricilla Queen of the Desert. Why do I know these things. AAAAAAARGH :bang:

You know you've got it bad when, you start shopping for ladies leather pants.
Especially, when the saleslady decides to help!:)

I thought the idea was cheap! The leather fetish scene is far too expensive

Hey John, I actually Liked 'Priscilla, Queen of the Desert'...

Roman

06-28-2005, 16:20
Okay, when Roman starts liking anything with "Queen" in the title, I've got to do some real soul searching and ask myself, "Do I really want to continue down this path?" Let's see, I can cling to my Russian Iron and start watching Will & Grace, or I can abandon the Goodwill purse department fooooooooorever and buy something plastic and digital!!

What channel did you say Will & Grace are on?

John Robertson
06-28-2005, 19:02
Plastic and Digital!!!!!!!!!!! Now thats really "camp" I can imagine all sorts of meanings in that, even in Illinois!! Rubber next????????????

Cameras!! C'mon guys think "Cameras!!" LOL!! Okay, we've tarried way too long at this thread. Suppose I'll just mosey into the other room and clean lenses or something.

John Robertson

One serious question please, what type of adhesive would you suggest for attaching the leather to the camera body,?

John Robertson

thanks Greyhoundman, sounds like the best idea. 8-))

Not the voice of experience here since, though I have collected materials for a future project, the only recover I've done so far was with an Aki cover, pre-cut/pre-glued, and it worked great, but Micro-tools offers Pliobond for just that purpose. I've read others who have used it. Maybe the G-man has tried both Pliobond & Weldbond and could give us a comparison. :( G?

Just processed a test film from the Fed, the results are great!! So its going to be worth making it look really nice as the camera is in "as new" condition the only thing that spoils it is the horrible herring-bone vinyl covering. Will post a picture of it when it is finished sometime nest week. Thanks a bundle to all of you. This is what makes RFF worth while.

Have you tried duct tape? Not as a covering! But as a glue clamp. Tape the covering down until the glue sets, remove the tape. I'ce done it on the curved ends of a Zorki-4.

Thanks greyhoundman and pshinkaw. Good info I'll store for the near future. Sounds like both Pliobond and Weldbond might be good to have around for variety since material comes in quite a variety as well. I see a few test runs ahead.
:D
hmmmmm..... "duct tape as a covering" .... maaaaaybe.......... a sort of "Redneck Emboss." For that inconspicuous shoot at a rodeo, tractor pull or NASCAR race.

I actually have an SLR with a cracked body part which leaked light. I made a temporary repair out of duct tape (the shiny silvery kind). It worked fine. Since it's my favorite basketball camera, I have until the winter high school season to do the permanent fix.

So since the wifey is out of town and she's got all those handbags she doesn't use anymore, I thought, "Hey, she'll never miss a couple... or three." So whadda ya think guys? Not too over the top is it? How 'bout the lens cap? Too much or no? I gotta tell ya it looks pretty good in the ol' trophy case... especially since I added the throw pillows, lava lamp and lace curtains. I guess the duct tape thing just didn't do it for me.

I'll say it... I'M AN IDIOT!! Seriously, this is absolutely my last post on this thread. I've GOT to get some sleeeeeeep!

P.S God knows what the Russians used to stick the original covering, either that or I need to eat more porridge!!!

Okay, just one more post to this thread --- John's FEDs brought me back. Those look absolutely primo; really nice work.

Not sure what the factory was thinking with that ribbed canvas stuff that came on many FSUs, but you gotta admit guys, nothing makes a better camera covering than dead cow.

Sorry folks, will have to go out and buy a new purse!!! did another recover jobbie!!!
My Lomo 135 M, if you've not heard of it, think of it as the ******* child of a union between a Leningrad and a Rollei 35. Small motor drive compact. Weighs a ton, gives a quiet click followed by a deafening Keeeerchunk as it winds on. Not one for shooting in the library!!
Sharp lens though!!
