Knowing that there are probably just as many bicycling fanatics on here as there are Leica users, I just thought I'd share a few pics from this past weekend's Alpenrose cyclocross races. This wasn't a comprehensive photo excursion by any means, but I did shoot a couple rolls while watching a couple buddies riding. One or two I quite liked, but mostly just sharing a little slice of life here in Biketown USA.

Nice series, I especially like # 3 and # 6. Isn't RFF-member "visiondr" also a bike-fan and from Oregon ?

He is indeed. Judging by the legs he may be #820? ;)

Yea, not a very comprehensive essay. Next time I'll actually roll up my sleeves and get dirty. Or... better yet, I'll ride.

I like the color shots particularly. What film/lens combo did you use?

6 & 8 was taken with a Summilux 50 (pre-ASPH E46) and the others a Summicron 35 (v4 pre-). Color film was Portra 400, though I pushed the heck out of it to make the images a little grittier. Anyway, I think most of them are pretty ordinary, but quite liked 1 and 3.

six shines for me, Black and White film seems so well suited
for this event

Cyclocross is a wonderful spectator sport. Great shots.

Andy the shots are great.

You can roll up your sleeves and get dirty if you want, but next time at least ask the riders the have some dried mud crusting their limbs and helmets -- even if the mud is from the previous weekend. Personally, I'm a roadie. I like to look at other muddy people, but prefer to keep my ride and my person relatively clean.

If you really and truly respected your craft AND your sport, you go and race next time AND carry your MP to get some shots in the midst of the action. MP's are weatherproofed, right???

Happy trails to you.

Ah, "psycho-cross!"

Good photos overall. Anyone we know (or kinda-sorta know) in that bunch?

Very cool. I'm in Oregon... where do I find these psycho-cross events? Looks like it'd be fun to shoot.

Google can help. Also, ask around locally for the location of events that are "a cross between bicycle road-racing and Rugby." :D

(Or maybe I was thinking of bicycle polo...)

Nice photos, but I have to say, I was surprised at how neat, and mud-free, cyclocross has become.

I was surprised to see so many carbon fiber forks in those shots. Cyclocross is just about the last place I would want to trust a fork that might just shatter on me with no warning.

Indeed! - I remember my competitive days!....worrying about breaking those bamboo wheel rims!....putting the acetylene lamps back on for the ride home!....then mother washing the mud from me and the 'Hercules' in the galvanised bath - in the back yard!....while dad developed the plates from the Sanderson!...ahh...wonderfull memories! :)

Carbon fiber cross forks are generally 200-300 grams heavier then their road counterparts. Overbuilt to take the stress of cross and cantilever brakes, but still lighter then steel cross forks.

I guess this thread should now be moved to Cyclocross forum. As for the mud... well, it simply wasn't wet and muddy out. Not much more to be done about it.
