View Full Version : Summicron 90/2 for $1000+ ???
I just checked on ebay asking prices for the silver Summicron M 90/2. Every single one offered costs over $1000. These are not even the aspherical types. Is this for real?
What is a "RFF Price" for a mint silver 90/2?

Hi Raid, I bought a black Cron for $750, but found it too soft for my taste at full aperture. Otherwise nice lens.
As a portrait lens, some softness wide open can be desirable.
So, maybe $600-$700 for a mint condition Cron then.
The lens is perfect for portraits.

I have an early chrome 90 Summicron, from 1959. It is great for portraits.

I will put up my Cron for sale here in a classified ad.
I'm just asking for a reasonable mint condition asking price.

Ahhh, I thought you were looking for reasons to get one, but thought the ebay prices were to high.
I also find the ebay asking prices too high.
At $600-$750 a mint Cron is correctly priced.
There used to sell cheaper ones out there though for about $450.
The pre-asph silver Summicron is a heavy beast and while beautifully made my girly-man biceps couldn't handle it. I find the early Summicron black or chrome tonally more pleasing and the Elmarit (any version) sharper. The E55 pre-asph Summicron was neither so I didn't find much reason to have one.
Ray,
Mine is the earlier version with built-in lens. Is this model before the pre-ASPH?

If it has E48 filter size and the head comes off for Viso then it is earlier than the pre-asph. It is really a beautiful lens. The Viso adapter is really hard to find but worth search for. You can then use it on Nikon DSLR, et al.

Hi Raid,
Yes i do believe the e55 is pre asph.
:)
I got mine for $600 from Adorama. Great cosmetic and mechanical condition. A spec of dust on the inside of the rear element. You'd never even know it was there.

I'll send it to DAG at some point to get the dust speck taken care of. But I'm hardly concerned.

Hey Raid, I will be interested to know how you feel if/once you sell your 90mm summicron (e48) and purchase a pre-asp summicron...I have been thinking of doing the same....cheers, michael
It's high price must be a rarity issue assuming it's the pre-asph. E55 version. These were special editions to commemorate certain bodies. Not very practical since the silver chrome versions had a lot more brass adding to weight.
With the impending M9 (FF?) release, I wonder if the demand for tele lenses will increase slightly? A true 75mm or 90mm...

Low prices suggest the 90 is not the most popular lens for most photog. People who can afford a new M9 will be not be buying old 90s in masse.
Stick to the 90 for a month or two, Raid. Maybe the FF M9 comes a la carte, with .85 finder ? :)
Then again, I know what you are trading it for, you should sell it !

Do you mean the Visoflex? I think, I have a mint Visoflex II still in the box with the enlarged viewfinder.
Hi Raid,

:)
But I don't know whether my lens is a e55 or not.

Hi Michael,
I am not considering a pre-ASPH Summicron.

... and then 35mm lenses will become more popular than the 28mm lenses which now are being used on the M8 as "35mm". This means, sell your 28mm lens quickly and/or get your 35mm lens quickly since prices will rise for the 35mm lenses when the M9 comes out!

It is all your "fault", Roland. :D:bang::angel:
So, what are you planning on buying, Raid?
:)
Raid,
I thought again about what you are doing. I would keep the 90/2, and maybe sell some of your 50s ? The 90 is easier to use on the M3, and has identical DOF wide open and close up as the 75/1.4. Plus your 90 is part of such a nice 35/50/90 kit ....
Think of the 75 as a slightly long 50 ....
Reg the price, there is a v2 90/2 in the classifieds for US 525 now.
None of my business of course, just my 2 cents.
Cheers,
Roland.
So, what are you planning on buying, Raid?
Frank,
I am tempted to get a 75mm/1.4 Summilux, which Roland seems to really like.
:)

Roland,
I have twenty 50mm lenses, and I could sell the
Canon 50/1.4,
Nikon 50/2 Tokyo,
Zeiss Jena 50mm/2.8 Tessar LTM,
Canon 50/1.8,
Zeiss Opton 50mm 1.5 Contax mount.
This is a possibility too.

I have this lens and the Visoflex adapter, and the adapter to Nikon, as well as the OUEPO. I've tried to sell the set once before and got no bites. The lens does work great on a Nikon body with infinity focus guaranteed.
I won't put mine FS on this forum while Raid is considering selling his. Good luck!
Oh yeah, the lens is sharp wide open.

There you go. You can also add the Canon 85/1.5 - trust me, you won't need it anymore.

I just checked that 90 cron. The aperture numbers are reversed from the earlier chrome 90 cron ver 2 I have--maybe the same as Raids...
I won't put mine FS on this forum while Raid is considering selling his. Good luck!
Thank you, but it is not necessary right now. Go ahead and sell your lens.

OK--I'll give it another try :)

Part of the reason why I got the 90mm Cron was to see whether it was good enough to replace the 75mm Lux for my general (non-professional) use. If so, the 75mm can make room for the 50/90mm pair for the M3.
Time will tell (soon, I hope)
The 75mm is a gem to use, but it is a bit of a luxury and a bit too close to my canon 50/1.4

I have never used a 75mm Summilux and I would be very interested whether selling so many items [in my case] to get such a lens is actually worth it if you already have a Summicron or not.

Leica M8 + 90mm Summicron pre-asph E55 @ f/2
My experience with this lens has never been one of "softness" at full aperture. Accurately-focused and stabilized, of course.
I agree with Gabriel. If well used, this lens is sharp even when wide open. It seems to be a label it got to be soft wide open. It is not.

Hello Raid, if I remeber correctly, you showed a photo before of your 35mm with goggles, 50mm rigid and the 90mm summicron...I am pretty sure we have the same lens...I don't think I could get a lot for mine because the body is a user and it definitely shows wear, however, the glass is perfect and it works excellent, but yes, it is a big lens.....it is also very well made..
it's sharp enough for me and I think it is excellent for portraits...

cheers...michael
p.s..I think the 75mm summilux would be a very fun lens to use
lucky!!!!!

Some people swear by the 75 Lux. I found it too heavy to take along as a second lens. For what they cost you'd probably do better with the 75 Cron.
