A couple Kodachrome Slides I ran across this afternoon- Taken in 1954 in Yellowstone by my Grandfather with an Argus C4 which I still have. The car is a '54 Pontiac by the way- my dad was inside feeding the bears marshmallows.

Those are great photos. The black bear looks like a guy in a bear suit!

It was such a simple time, wasn't it?

I remember when we made the trip to Yellowstone in 1960 in a 55 Pontiac. Wish I had that car now...

OMG that brings back memories! We went out to Yellowstone when I was 8 or so and I do remember the bears climbing up on cars like that begging for food. They seemed very tame. Everybody was feeding them even though they told you not to!

I still have (somewhere) some old B&W photos of Old Faithful taken with my Starflash. :)

(Yeah, that one looks like a guy in a bear suit, maybe a Letterman stunt.) :) :)

Maybe we should open a n/nw thread? I have a few to post also, 6x6 slides from 1970 and earlier my grandfather took.

Great thread btw, I really like those!

It was absolutely 'nuts' to venture out of the car in a situation like that. Bears are unpredictable and difficult to read. Last time I was in Yellowstone (1991) a tourist had just been attacked by a bear and bitten in the face (they usually do that). When the guy woke up again at the hospital, he had asked; 'do I have any brains left?' according to the local radio.

We have just had two recent fatal bear attacks here in Scandinavia. A hunter with dog in Sweden and a Finish policeman out jogging in Finland.

Back then, in simpler times, bears were less angry. They had more space. :-)

Apparently jeff's father and grandfather survived?

That is so cool! Nice shots. I love the car and the 'chrome.

I didn't make it there until 22 years after you. :D

Yea, wonderful old photos alright. A classic example of what not to do with bears, then or now.

Nobody said "a fed bear is a dead bear" until the early 1970s.

Hi, greg...

I no longer have my old Argus AF but I still have my 1954 Pontiac, Chieftian Deluxe, four door, flathead straight eight with Hydromatic and six-way MANUAL seat. We summer in Tampa near the north end of Dale Mabry. I envy your year-round status.

Those are great shots - you have to love the old Kodachromes.

And, BTW, here is some footage that shows just how dangerous these animals can be. Be careful out there....

Here's what I always wonder about feeding bears: What happens when the food runs out? Do the bears go away? Do you say, "No more food, Mr. Bear" and watch them amble away politely?

Those who have been to Cape Town and driven down to the cape will have seen the baboons who can get rather upset if no one throws food at them. There's video someplace of a several essentially tearing a car apart.

The well-mannered bears wait patiently for food...

"Do I have any brains left?" Great question coming from a guy who seems to have none to begin with.

I love the shots even if grandpa did some that we modern folk consider to be foolhardy.

This is surprising. I don't think bears do this anymore. Not to mention I think if anyone saw you feeding a bear, someone would have the rangers on your ass. Great shots.
