Got a G1 few weeks ago, after reading the manual I'm still unable to figure out how to use the P and CUST on the dial. What is the different between the P and the M? This is my first digital camera so I am a bit in the dark about all the automated figure in those new camera.
Thanks in advance.

usually in the P mode the camera decide time and aperture, but you can shift the setting, without changing the exposure (es: camera set 1/125" f4, you can change it in 1/250" f2.8 or 1/500" f2). In M mode you decide both time AND aperture . CUST should be "custom" , but I don't know how it works in your camera.

Ok, pretty much understand it a bit more now, in another words P is like M but the camera will provide the base setting of shutter and Aperture. Thanks!

IIRC, the 'P' stands for Program (mode), but you can think of 'P' as 'Point and shoot' mode, which is pretty much what is happening, or 'Prefer not to think' mode, or as a friend of mine used to call it 'P*ssy' mode.

'M' is for Manual (mode), but you can think of 'M' as 'Macho', 'Manly' or 'Master' mode.
Never used 'CUST' mode. You can make up your own mnenomic for that one.

RayPA, your definition is way easier to understand than the manual's.
Thanks!
