View Full Version : Value for an old Silver beat up 90mm Elmar?
A local guy is offering me one for $75. It sounds cheap to me... but no need in buying stuff if I won;t use it, so curious if you guys think this would be an interesting lens for my CLE.
Here is what it looks like:

As with any old lens make sure that the focus and aperature are smooth and working across the range.
I built a carry on work trip kit some years back that was my M4-P, one of these and a 35/3.5 and love it. While it was not the sharpest lens, it worked great when I needed it. Plenty good enough to still be called a Leica lens.
They are small and easy to carry in just about any pocket.
There are slightly bigger alternatives but they cost more and are hard to find.
$75 is an OK price IMHO as you do not need an adapter to use it on your CL.
I paid more for one with a dent on the front ring (making it unable to take filters) back in the late '80s.

It already has an M bayonet. No need for an adapter! The vulcanite trim band is toast but that doesn't affect using it. A bottle of contact cement and an old leather belt together with some careful trimming and that could be easily fixed.
If the offered price is $75 he might be expecting you to counter with a lower offer. You say "$50" and he might let you have it for $60. Try to get the hood and caps with it. The hoods are pricey.
Al, Bill, as always, thanks for your input. I think I will make hm an offer. Seems like it will compliment my 40mm Rokkor as a soft portrait lense for B/W.
