12 for the wall!

ok, so seems many folks want to have a project.

many projects revolve around gear and many have one objection or another because of this.
one lens or 2, film or digital, one body or 2, same body or different body, i can expand my photo skills if i limit my gear use, yada yada yada...

my goal or project, started as of july 1, 2009, is to have 12 printed images finished by this same time next year.

no gear limits, no magic potions or developing solutions. no self imposed limits at all, just focus on the image and have 12 really nice ones printed in a year's time.

That's a good target, and certainly a challenging one (for me).

Are you talking twelve pics that you would frame and hang on your wall? (hypothetically)

That's a good plan if so ... one decent frame worthy photo a month!

I had to print 50 (13x19's and 17x22's mixed) for a gallery show last year. Digitally, on my Epson 3800. You learn a lot about your photography when you do that. Not to mention your patience.

Sounds like a great project, Joe.

Good project. I try to take enough to make a few easy or work prints each week, but aim to make something better from time to time. One a month would be great.

if anyone would like to join me in this image making quest, all i need is to see 12 images in 12 months.

whatever rangefinder you choose to use, or film or sensor size is of no consequence to me.

That was my senior project in art school back in 1999. I did 12 images, all shot in square format and printed full frame, all printed the same size and framed identically. They were a series of images of rural Allen County, Indiana.

These are a few of them.

Oh yes, and all of them were one camera, one lens. Mamiya C330f and 80mm f2.8. All but one were Tmax 100 in Rodinal. The one of the two doors was Agfapan APX 400 in Rodinal.

ok, i just started a new flickr group, 12, for the wall.
it is by invite only, so if you would like to be a part of this little project and are a flickr member, let me know and i will send an invite out to you.

you can post all you like and edit later or post all 12 in a year's time.
or post for a critique (let us know)

I think this is a great project. I'll take this on, also. Been looking for an interesting personal project. I'll also let the local gallery here in town know what I'm up to and perhaps they'll give me a little wall space for the finished project next year.

Thanks for this idea, Joe!

I think just making the effort to print some shots you've already done can be revelatory as well - I've recently discovered baryta paper (Ilford Gold Fibre Silk) which seems to finally make inkjet prints that look like "real" photos, and have been going back printing loads of my images I'd only ever seen on screen - the difference is ridiculous. Good luck with the project.

count me in. (flickr name: matuskalisky 0 no photos there yet :()

So you say - no restrictions? ... OK :p

Should we be adding the images then gradually or in one year all at once ?

thought i would bump this up...

the project goes from july 2009 to july 2010 so the latest one could join would be the end of this month, provided you have a shot from this july to add.

no pressure, just a reminder in case you were considering joining.

I ordered #1 of 12 from Mpix last Friday. Guess what? I used 1 lens, 1 camera, 1 film, 1 tripod, 1 developer and 1 subject to make the photograph! It will be on a wall. Not mine.

I need to get my behind in gear and come up with #2 soon.

Cheers!

The print arrived. I am definitely ordering a second one for my wall. Does that count for 2 of my 12?

Only kidding. I'm excited to see my first 16x20. I've never printed larger than 11x14 or 12x18 in the past.

We are having fun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

this is a good idea (even if i say so myself ;))...trying to get 1 good shot a month doesn't sound like much but it offers a real incentive to shoot and to shoot well.

Hmm, well Joe this might challenge me too much, as I aim for 6 frameworthy shots in a year and have thought that's just dandy.
Until now, I realize what a schmucky slow shooter I am...

Thanks for setting this up, Joe. (And thanks to the commenters and bumpers, as I missed the original posting). A few years ago, I made a New Years resolution to make 1 print a week, so this should get me part way there.

Thanks for letting me play! Now I need to decide about printing for myself or having some one else print for me.
If I do it my self, I'm limited to 8x10 but the expense is rather less.
I have used MPIX before and been very happy with their work and I could, potentially, go much bigger.
And I'll start looking around here to see if there is anywhere I might be able to hang them all next July.
My photography has been a bit unfocused (sorry!) lately, this will give it some direction.
