Twitter is like a super pared-down version of Facebook. All you can do is update your profile, and you only have 140 characters. Your profile is public and anyone can "follow you" which means that they can read your updates. Likewise you can follow anyone else. It's great for following trends and news, but rubbish for detailing your trip to the psychiatrist... I find it useful in my work as a teacher as I am networked with similarly minded teachers across the world, and so it might be useful here too.

You can post hyperlinks too, which means if you wrote a post here (for example) you could let all of your followers know about it. They could follow the link from there to here.

Cheers,
Jack.

I wish I could go back. Just don't type those words into Google (search engine, to be found at www.google.com) and you'll live a happy, productive live.

:D I'll be honest, I started off with Windows ME, which would have made me stop using computers all together if it wasn't for Linux. I'm not into twitter btw, cause seriously, my productivity took a dive when I was introduced to RSS.

I don't get the appeal of Twitter, tried it. Facebook on the other hand has been very useful.

Facebook was fun for about three weeks, as old schoolmates came out of the woodwork. Twitter, unless you work for a news-dispersal organization, is completely ridiculous. "Social networking," in general, is another indication of how narcissistic our U.S. culture has become. Everybody has something to say and we expect others to be interested.

So your idea of 'social' involves a lot of silence, huh?

I don't think you should be interested in what I say. I might be interested in what you say though...

I use Twitter for very specific purposes, mainly to promote and develop my class blog (I am a teacher - class blog here (http://yeartwo.chorltonparkblogs.net/)) and to get news and advice on technical stuff. You may not be interested in using it, which is no problem.

I thought it might be an easy way to tell people about new photos on the web, to link to photographers and their websites, and to keep in touch in a less formal way than a forum.

I take your point about the consumer culture and about some peoples' need to feel listened to, but these things are tools which you can use (or not) as you wish. One does not have to use these things in the manner you describe.

Cheers,
Jack.

Twitter was cool until it got hyper-overhyped.

Larry King "uses" it. 'nuff said.

Be careful who you follow. I'm following a journalist who is in Iran, He seems to "tweet" nonstop.

I haven't linked my phone yet. Will all these updates be sent to my phone?

Well thank god, it's starting to be concering how low news coverage (http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/dear_cnn_please_check_twitter_for_news_about_iran. php) is (CNN, ..).

I have been using Twitterific and it's pretty good. I also have it on my Mac but prefer TweetDeck as you can post to Facebook and Twitter simultaneously. I am by no means a power user but I do use it fairly frequently. My tweets are usually about discovering photo ops or new food/wine such as, "Awesome church at 31st Ave & 30th St, Astoria! http://bit.ly/fIGu9" (which happens to be down the block from my new apartment) or "There's a great new Gewerstraminer at Terroir." Nothing like the celebrity psycho-babble that is so in vogue today. :D

I was into twitter more during the election... I can't imagine even my friends and family are THAT interested in me and what I'm doing each second of the day. I expect my fascination with facebook will eventually wear off... I've only been a member a little over a week after refusing to join for the last however-many years.

What is "twitter" / "facebook" ?
Large timesinks that slowly deteriorate ones ability to communicate without LOL and WTF among other acronyms.
Facebook allows people to post a whole host of personal information that they allow a select group of interfriends read.

Twitter allows text speak to replace standard language , in a sense it looks to be well on its way to further mangling the english language , thus making a hard to learn language that much harder.

I have a myspace, and I refuse to get on twitter , i have no time for "tweets" especially when it has been popularized by twits . Facebook seems like one more distraction that I do not need.

To those of you that enjoy it , good for you, i resist both of these with vigilance, but maybe eventually ill fall victim to them as i did with myspace and text messaging(which I cannot send short texts, i have an issue with send abnormally long and weird texts to see what the reaction is ). Assimilation into the pop culture so that I can carry on conversations with people in abbreviated fashion.

Although I used to be an early adopter of new internet technologies Twitter just doesn't appeal to me. I don't care what people are doing minute to minute, especially if they have the time to stop and type it into their blackberry, or whatever.

I suppose once you all have left me in the dust though I'll get around to checking it out. :P

I use TwitterFon. Nice layout, easy to use, gives you trends, a functional search function and, oh yeah, it is free.

I think the term is tweeters...

I'm starting to play with twitter as well, and having a lot of fun!
The nice thing is looking at 'nearby' tweets on my iPod touch when I'm particularly bored: it's fun to look at what your neighbors are tweeting in the last couple of minutes. I'm using twitterrific on my iPod and I like it a lot, but I must admit I didn't try any other client so far.
Here's my twitter (http://twitter.com/ragnetto).

depending on your fb app, you can have it update status (auto with fb twitter app), or selectively with 3rd party fb app that uses #fb to update fb status with tweets.

Google keeps me informed. I hardly ever use facebook or twitter. I use every day many time google. For peer reviewed article searches I use Google Scholar. It has become a major tool in my teaching. Students sometimes refer to me by saying "he always uses google ...".

I don't see any uses yet for twitter (twitter.com/TheRotzbremse)
