That hanging around here too much aint good for the GAS is common knowledge, been having a walkabout in Buenos Aires 2nd hand stores for cameras to day, and found a Contax S with a carl Zeiss Jena Biotar 2/58. Fits me perfect since I´v have birthday next week, nice gifts are always nice :) But then I start thinking, which is never a good thing, because sometimes you realise stuff that explains a bit more than needful.

Huum, when did i buy my stereo ?, well it was when i was dumped my my girlfriend in 96, i didn't have to travel to see here more. When did I buy the 85mm 1,4 for Nikon and the extra FM house? lets see . . didn't i get dumped by someone a month before?
And didn't the same girl dump me again just about the time I´v bought the contax G2? And what about the M6, didn't you give up the girl of your dreams for good just about that time ?, No that was just coincidence . .

So is it just me who has this "random" pattern ?

I just wonder.
I should start drinking instead of, as normal people when it fails :D

I do the same thing... not having a significant other around definitely increases the amount of cash available for my little obsession. At least cameras are easier on the liver :D.

Heaven forbid I date a girl equally into photography and camera gear....

Every cloud has a silver lining! The corollary of having had many girlfriends is having experienced many break-ups.

every since a year ago I broke up with my girlfriend, I've been trading in cameras. If only I had the money and didn't need to sell my cameras to afford the new ones. I would have at least 6 cameras by now. My canonet just arrived and I already have an eye on an OM2n with Vivitar macro 55/2.8 for close up work.

If I don't stop buying camera's the wife is gonna dump me!

I think if my wife were to dump me after 15 years I don't think buying a camera would be high on the list! Good thing there are no indications that's about to happen. :)

On the bright side, girlfriends are even more expensive than camera's! You're just spending the money you're saving on diamonds!!! :p
(come to think about it, I probably spend more on my wife than on camera's; must do something about that :D )

I had a girlfriend who demanded that I choose between buying cameras and her...

I now have lots of cameras... and a partner who respects my photography and even dabbles in it herself!

The amount of cameras I have is inversely proportional to my success with women :)

And now that I think, I don't even know why I'm smiling :bang:

At least cameras are reasonably cheap to buy. When I was single and got dumped (many moons ago) I used to buy large quantities of Tequila which inevitably led to stunt driving which led to 4 new cars. New cars vs. cameras is a no brainer. Usually exactly what I was exhibiting while drunk, no brains, LOL.

What you two need to do is find a girlfriend that likes to have her picture taken.

Look at Roman. Does his girlfriend Nicole have any sisters? Do girls names "Nicole" ALL like their picture taken!

Nope, she only has brothers, too bad for you guys... (on of her brothers is tatooed from neck to toes, might make a good photo subject!)
Oscar, you should have chosen a different major at university - see, in my major (pedagogics) , there's about 10 girls per guy - I don't even notice how often I get hit on any longer... ;)
BTW, I just came back from a seminar - I gave a presentation about 'Neurodevelopmental treatment - the Bobath concept and its relation to pedagogics' (roughly translated), now I'm already thinking how to gratify myself for having done all the work for that (still have to write a paper, though); that's when I tend to buy stuff for myself - as a kind of 'bonus' when I've completed something I put a lot of work into.
Thinking about which scanner to choose...

Brian, well, some do - see, there's not many guys around, so there's not much choice for the girls - and you do spend a lot of work together in classes, doing group projects, etc...
Hint: Nicole studied pedagogics, too (though I met her at a mutual friend's party before I found out).
Now, on the other hand, in computer sciences the f-m ratio is the opposite, so not the best place to look for someone if you're a guy.

Tell me, times have changed but when I started (1995 :o ) the ratio was even lower than on RFF, Some classes were 1-2f vs 40-60m, so you get the idea...

Indeed, even the faculty itself started an advertising campaign which said 'girl, don't be afraid of engineering', probably they should have written 'dont be afraid of engineers' !

Roman, congrats on your presentation, btw, that for a moment or two I was scared, as I read 'graffity' instead of 'gratify' ...

Well, sure thanks for the advices Brian & Roman, they are really appreciated, and good luck I'm alone at the office because I'm having a riot of fun... :D

And Curt, yep, seen that way, cameras vs cars is a no brainer !

This thread is a riot and Brian - you've clearly got it all worked out! ;) But vha, you are in Buenos Aires so forget women, forget cameras and think football! Were you at the Argentina - Brazil World Cup qualifier last night? If not why not? :) And start hanging out at La Bombonera - Boca, Boca, Boca, Boca!! :D

Whatchatalkingabout??? Forget about women.. in BsAires?
Argentinian women are extremely beautiful, love to have their pictures taken and are very very imaginative.

PS. Argentina beat Brasil 3-1... what a match!

PS. Argentina beat Brasil 3-1... what a match!OK, OK. You are right and I will modify that. Temporarily forget. :D

I'm hoping they show the match here on the telly. Sounds like it was a fantastic game! You wonder what Crespo thought just after half-time, 3-0 up and Carlos scores. Shades of Istanbul - oh oh!!

It will be on GOL TV Friday 9PM Eastern time.

It was a fantastic match, got to see it at a restaurant with some friends... after my country got clobbered 3-0 by Colombia. But we are still 3rd ;)

Oh so you are from Ecuador! So many international members here that's what makes this forum so great (in part)! Well I don't get GOL with my service but it will probably be on the Fox Soccer Channel here. Good luck with the rest of the qualifying - three games I think! :) Hey we're badly off topic... ;)

Peter, I think they would show the game at Cafe Paradiso in Harvard Square. I will probably be in New York on Friday but otherwise I might go to see if they will show it or not.

As for this thread, I think it can be simplefied to this: whenever we have money we spend it on cameras.

Might be why so many of us with a lot of cameras a older. I've been married 38 years and I think my mate figures letting me get all this junk is cheaper than a Corvette of a mistress:) Might be a lot of others operate on the same theory. A girl friend, on the other hand, doesn't have that kind of viewpoint or patience.

Yup Ecuadorean living in NC... same longitude different latitude
badly OT, we have to win at least one of those games to qualify. BOlivia and Uruguay are next.
The last match is with Chile in Chile.... tough, very very tough

I was once told that the wife of a well known collector of FSU cameras left him because of his obsession of camera collecting. The most serious case of GAS

Sounds like something I can do with my spare time. Volunteer at the local hospital and get dates for the evening. My heart is in the right place and so is something else. :P

I have bought some serious gear after my break ups. Mostly because while with the girl I was getting some money saved up. Then after she is gone I have a bunch of expendable income. Let's see, after Diana I bought a new Brietling, after Aydana I bought the MP with 1 lens, after the second breakup with Diana I got two more M mount lens', after Sonya (actually missed her) I bought the R9, after Lyda I got the rest of my lens' and a Rolex sea dweller. I just can't afford anymore women. They are bad.

Can't comment on breaking up.... I'm happily married, and I'm OK in that department :)

However, I do work a lot - I'm self-employed, and (luckily) the business is usually good. So, after a particularly nasty and long translation (which is followed by a hefty invoice :)), and particularly if I'm immediately throwing myself on another translation project, I sometimes indulge myself with another gear purchase. Think of it as an outlet... I don't get out much, don't really drink, don't chase women, and I don't nearly shoot my cameras as much as I'd like to. So, buying more gear is actually a "vent" of a kind, a substitute for "real life", which for me is passing in front of a computer screen, banging away at the keyboard, translating boring manuals or contracts :(

RFF can be seen as another outlet in this regard, when I think about it better. Instead of going out with friends for a drink, I take a break from my work (MS Word still open in another window) to check out what's new on RFF. A few minutes at a time, and then back to work.

I probably wouldn't buy so much gear if I had time to actually use the gear I already have :)

I probably wouldn't buy so much gear if I had time to actually use the gear I already have :) Or if you didn't log in to RFF for "a few minutes at a time"... ;)
