What's your best bargain you've found? For example, did you find a nice Leica IIIf at a garage sale for $50? Or did you find a sale of a "Cannon 50/1.5" for $50 because someone misspelled Canon. Or did you find that Canon 50/1.5 on eBay because it was on a Canon IIS and just listed as a "old Canon camera"

What did you find, what did you pay and what do you think the true value was?

I really have had any super great finds. I guess the best were that I got my Canon 35/2 for $215 and I got a Tele-Elmar (user) for $75. Neither was listed improperly, so perhaps no one was looking at the time.

$10 for an Olympus 35SP was probably my best. I keep waiting for that yard sale Leica. :D

Edit: Now that I think about it, the Spotmatic II with 24mm f/3.5 Takumar for $30 was probably my best find, but I flipped it on eBay after only 1 test roll. I kind of wish I had kept it but the money went toward my Bessa w/ZM lens.

I picked up a mint black Nikon F3/T on Craigslist for $150 and Nikkor 15mm 5.6 for about $200 I seem to remember

I bought a "Plus X Camera" once for $25 plus shipping. It ended up being a fully functioning Anniversary Graphic with a lot of accessories. To me the value is "priceless" since it is such a good camera to use.

I got an Angenieux Retrofocus Type R1 2.5/35 from a thrift shop for $11. It's an M42 mount. The same shop sold me a really nice condition Plabel Makina II complete kit with the 3 lenses and 2 roll film backs for $150. Also got a mint Zuiko 2/21 and 2/90macro for $600 from my local printing shop. A consignment that was overpriced and I just low balled on a day the owner was there and hungry. Traded those two away regrettably.

My ex is in the antique business. A few years ago one of her dealer friends called me up. He'd just come from an estate auction and wanted to know if I'd be interested in buying "a sack of old cameras" for $500. It was months later that I discovered that he was expecting me to bargain him down to maybe $300, and his winning bid (the ONLY bid!) at the auction had been $25.00. (That's TWENTY-FIVE dollars)

I was amazed that the stuff truly looked brand new, everything complete with hoods and caps. There was a Hasselblad 150 Sonnar, a 'blad back, a 'blad prism, filters and cases.

On the Rollei list was a a late model camera with prism, caps, hood, and filters and
a Rollei 35 (German)

There was a Leica CL with a 40mm Summicron.

Like new Leica M2 and M3 bodies, a 90mm chrome Elmarit, 35mm f/2.8 Summaron w/eyes, a 28mm BLACK PAINT Elmarit, all with hoods and caps.

Assorted straps and what not.

Half a dozen Leica cassettes,

An hour later I'd sold the 150 'blad Sonnar to my repair guy for $600 cash and install M4 style synch sockets in the two M bodies.

I got a Fed 3a for 30 euros. Sounds alot but it came with an Orion 15 28mm lens. Whilst not in leica bargain territory it has proved a good little street lens even with the added cost of CLA.

Canon 100/2 LTM for $112, really excellent condition.

eBay BIN for a Nikkor 35/1.8 in Nikon RF mount, with original lens hood and caps, for $175. Looks really nice on the Contax II and Nikon SP

Well, I can't top Al's find, but I've had various success finding bargains...from memory:
Canon GIII w/Canonet D and hood - $18
Welta Weltur - $12
Miranda Sensorex EE w/50 - $20
Yashica Electro G - $5
Olympus XA w/A16 - $28
Rolleiflex D w/2.8 Xenotar - $120
Ricoh Diacord L - $28 + ship
Minolta XD11 w/50 f1.4, 35, 135, 320Px flash - $120

Of course this has been over 25 years of looking with too many hours spent, so the ROI is probably negative. ;) But it is fun - it's the thrill of the hunt. Right now I seem to be running into lots of the first generation autofocus cameras.

Some time ago I found a beat-up Rolleiflex 2.8F, with case, filters, hood, rolleinars for a price south of £180. Ugly enough to chase the suitors away, but still doing exactly what it says on the tin.

Hey guys, that was a once in a lifetime find! I ended up selling a lot of it privately for a lot less than I could have got on ebay. My son talked me out of the Rollei 35, and a year later, the Leica CL, then I ended up getting him a 90/4 Elmar-C and a 21mm VC lens and finder. Naturaly he uses his wife's digital most of the time and getting them to send pix of my granddaughter is like pulling teeth...LOL

I got a Leica 28mm elmarit in mint condition for $125 and a mint condition 50mm 1.4 summilux for $350 at an estate sale.

I missed out on a lot of Leica stuff at a different estate sale that had a table full of Leica gear and accessories--both M and R and 2 Leica 10x42 binoculars, which went for $120 each. No one was buying the camera stuff. At the time, I just wasn't that familiar with Leica. Ouch, it still hurts.

-M3 DS (slight vertical misalignment of RF patch, but works just fine)
-Summicron DR 50mm with Leitz cap, Leitz 39mm UV filter, and Leitz folding metal hood, but no goggles
-Elmar 90mm with hood (aperture ring a little stiff, but honestly don't use this focal length much)
-Leica MR meter
-New not-yet-applied cameraleather even though the only thing peeled off is a dime size patch by the rewind lever.

All the above for around $950

I was perfectly happy with my Olympus family (OM-1, 35SP, XA) until I started reading this forum. I blame you guys for this *almost* impulse buy. How could I pass it up?

Leica M3 DS, 50mm collapsible summicron, IROOA lens shade, black MR-4 meter. All (except the hood) in pretty great condition.

The asking price was $450. The shutter needed adjustment (sticking on the slow speeds), and when I pointed that out, (while handing the camera back) the owner asked me "How about $200?"

Yea. I didn't have to think too long about that. :)

Ok , not a bag of 'Blads and Leicas, but a dream come true none the less.

I am in my local thrift shop when I notice some kind of Nikon F-mount lens keeping company with all the old auto-focusers and Super-8 cameras in their display counter.

Turns out to be a mint 35 f2 - but the price sticker was nowhere in sight. So I'm on my knees, peering up through the glass shelf to see if it's on the bottom when I spy, on the shelf right below, the rounded silver contour of some camera, engraved LEICA, I can't see the rest.

I wave over at one of the workers and wait for someone with keys to arrive, all the while obscuring as much of the display counter as I can with my body.

How much is this lens? "$25". Then as casually as I can manage, "and that camera"? -- "$80".

I didn't even look at them, I didn't want anyone to notice that Value Village had an "M" for sale. They put them in a bag and I carried them all the way home in a bit of a daze. Didn't take them out until I was in my livingroom, and really didn't believe it until I did. A might-as-well-be-new M6TTL with a 50 1.4 Summilux. (not the asph. in case you were wondering)

I had sometimes thought wouldn't it be nice if... and the fantasy camera in the case was usually a black M4 with a 35 Summicron, well I guess the TTL with the 50 Summilux is what I'm supposed to have.

Bought a Nikon FM2n with Nikkor 50mm f1.2 for EUR 50.00, that was years ago. Sold for EUR 475.00

Bought a Konica Auto S3 in mint condition for EUR 17.50, sold for EUR 250.00
Bought a Konica Hexar AF complete set for EUR 150.00, sold for EUR 517.00 within 24 hours. All years ago.

Bought a rare FED-S with FED 50mm f2.0 lens for EUR 150.00 last month. Estimated value for a mint example like mine: EUR 750.00. Best of all, it came from notoriously-high-pricing PhotoArsenal off the big Bay. They must be kicking themselves over the mistake they made, still no pos. feedback returned :)

My best bargain was aquiring the "eyes" for a 50 mm DR Summicron for free when my then employer closed to old photo lab. Later I bought a lens that needed the eyes.

It wasn't, shutter in these do not cock as you wind on if there is no film in the camera!! It works just fine,
my Son uses it now!!
The Vito B is probably one of the most rugged cameras ever made.

Nothing like the above, but I'm kinda proud of my little wins in the auction site.

An Elmarit 135mm f2.8 for $165 (nobody bid), which I later sent to DAG for goggle adjustment. I replaced it with a copy of the newer version, so sold this one for just what I paid, plus the adjustment cost.

An Elmar 90mm f4 collapsible for $180. I may send it to Sherry for cleanup and the like, but it's my latest Leica acquisition.

Other than that... I've never stumbled upon any of those garage- or estate-sale finds, and I've had my share of sales, believe me! Now, I just don't see the point of pursuing the dream of a Nikon S with a 50mm f1.4 for $25.

Must add... an Elmarit 28mm f2.8 for $647, with hood and box, from Igor's Cameras in Cleveland OH. Sure: it needed a bit of a repair, but the price was really good for a Leica lens (and I still have it!).

It is either:

a) my local camera repair guy who does things like take my Zeiss Ikon with a RF that had come out of alignment, and hand it back to me perfectly aligned 15 minutes later saying he was sorry it took so long but no charge. Or, several similar repairs he has done while we talked always at no charge. In return, I try to take care of him. Today I brought him some of our famous local sweet corn that had just been picked.

b) my local used camera dealer who never charges me for small things like straps, filters, lens caps. Last year he gave me a Canonette GIII 1.7 QL because he knew I wanted one. And there is nothing in the store (except maybe his new Noctilux) that he would let me borrow. Oh yeah, he got some just picked corn today as well.

My best deal may have been trading duplicate SLR equipment for a unique 3D camera by the inventor Douglas Winnek from WWII. It may have been used to take photos days before the Hiroshima drop of the atomic bomb.

I guess, the camera is "valuable" from a historic point of view.

Leica IIIC with 50mm f2.0 Summarit and case $40 at antique show. I told the seller as I handed him two $20's, "Some people don't know the value of what they have." He agreed.

1. Agfa PD16 Plenax
2. Kodak Flash Bantam w/flash, bracket and 11 apparently useable bulbs. These should also work with the Kodak Brownie Hawkeye Flash I got last weekend for $1.
3. Argus C3 Brick, which brought me to this forum.
4. 8 light meters of various age and maker.
5. 5 screw on close-up lenses for my 35mm film and digital Pentax SLR's.
6. 2 Large Format lenses, one each Polaroid Pathfinder and No. 2 Kodak Supermatic.
7. Polaroid One-Step (woo-hoo)

Plus a bunch of miscellaneous detrious (shutter release cables, mini-'pod etc). All cameras, light meters and lenses are in great shape. I also found manuals for all meters and two of the cameras. None of this is earth shattering stuff but well worth the whopping $10 I paid for it all. I'm still surfing the yard sales for the ever-elusive Pentax A* 600mm for a song. :D

It's Igor's birthday today, you might send him a belated card. ;-)

He is pretty conservative in his descriptions, and will often sell according to what he personally thinks the item is worth.

His personal collection is quite extensive.

Campus Camera in Kent, Ohio is also pretty good, they took a lot in on trade one night when I was hanging about, and turned over a couple of Nikon F's, serviced regularly by Nikon, one chrome one black, both with two finders, --the guy was using them on assignment and had used them taped. I think it was $200 for all, plus a dozen Nikon filters and cases.

I also found a couple of Black Nikon S lenses in Jackson Wy at a shop, with finders, cases, caps, hoods. $75, while on a trip with students, left the black $200 SP because it was brassed :bang:-- when I got home, one of the parents had a complete S2 outfit with three lenses a lady traded him for a new P&S AF while we were gone, so I was one upped.

A dealer at a show had to move his car as the hall folks were upset he parked on the grass. A guy in the parking lot did not want to pay the $5 to get in so he sold him a box of SM Leicas for $90, several bodies, lenses, etc.

A Voigtländer Prominent I with Nokton 1,5/50 for 20 €.

I visited a flea-market in the early morning. Under a table with puppets and children's clothes on I saw an older everready case. It was quite heavy, Iopened it and found this camera. Shutter and transport seemed to work. VF was clear. However one former owner has scratched his name in the back. I asked for the price and paid the without bargaining :D.

I exposed one film and was satisfied with the results. However it wasn't the kind of camera I like and I sold few months later.

Well I d'know. A Rolleiflex F2.8 for the cost of 2 coffees at Star*ucks? I think that takes the cake.

The bag of of assorted Hasselblads and Leicas would probably be the biggest coup in this thread (so far), and someone else got a Plaubel-Makina and 3 lenses for around $100 (can't seem to find that post). Brian's M3 kit is a tie for mine if you factor in just how much sweeter M3's are than M6's (they just are), and if history matters more than cash, then Raid's the winner.

In my case the M6 and 50 f1.4 were $80, it was the 35 f2 Nikkor that was another $25 more.

My bargain finds are sadly lacking the punch of most of the stuff on here. I did however find a Mamiya C3 TLR camera, a bit bashed with a broken focusing screen and no hood, but completely usable, for £13. Coupled that with a perfect 85mm lens for a shade under £25 and it's not a bad bit of medium format kit for less than £40...

A few years back I bought a 50mm Leica Summilux from a German seller on Ebay. The photos of the lens were of very poor quality, and the description was sparse and in German only. Plus shipping was to Germany only, but I asked the seller if he would consider Denmark, and he did.

From the poor quality pictures of the lens, I assumed it was a normal E43 Type II, which were all black anodized chrome barrel I believe. I was buying the lens to use.

As a result of the poor quality listing I won the lens for around 350 euros if I remember correctly.

When the lens arrived, I could tell right away that it was a BLACK PAINT lens of some sort - after some serial number investigation I found it was a Type I black paint lens made for black paint Leica M3 bodies, and quite rare. The lens was optically and mechanically PERFECT, no flaws to the glass what so ever, but with a moderate amount of sexy brassing to the black paint.

I considered keeping and using it and being happy, but when an expensive auction house in The Netherlands offered me nearly 2000 Euros for it, I sold it and bought a used 50mm Summilux ASPH instead.

I was given a complete Olympus OM10 kit [camera, 50mm 1.8 lens, flash, and strap, leather case all in boxes like new]. The camera did not function. I worked with it a bit and found what I thought was the answer. It worked. [for a while!!!!]. In short, if anyone needs this kit, it is yours free. Just pay the postage. It took great pictures while it worked.

Just on a whim I searched for "R3a" on eBay Sunday morning (have been looking for one on and off for a while now), there was one that had been listed two hours previous with a starting bid of $200, $300 Buy It Now price. I scanned the description, as soon as I saw it didn't have any problems I went through Bing to get the 8% cashback. Wound up costing $275 + shipping. Been excited all week waiting for it to come!

I just MISSED a black Olympus OM4t for $100 on Craigslist. That would have pretty good, eh?

I got a black one (UG, just some surface brassing) at KEH for $117, but it had the battery drain issue so I returned it. Sometimes I look at the little Zuiko 50 1.8 I ordered with it on the shelf and wonder what could have been :p

Al:
Had the same issue with my granddaughters. The key is to teach your grandchildren photography. Both my granddaughters develop B&W, although their grandmother almost strangled me for exposing her darling grandbabies to those deadly photochemicals! In any case, I have a deal with them that each takes pictures of the other and emails me the results. Works great and I don't have to pester my son and daughter-in-law any more.

I've had a few really great finds. One of the best was a Leica M2 (1960) near mint with a case full of lenses. In all there were 8 Leica M lenses, 1 Zeiss Sonnar 1.5 (early coated but damaged glass). 2 visoflexes, bellows, ton of adapters, filters, 2 ball heads and a mini Leitz tripod. also in the deal was a like new (absolute mint new) condition with 50mm summicron IIIG. All for just under $1500.

The second best find was a like new 4x5 baby Deardorff with 210mm Zeiss Tessar in an Ilex shutter, case and five new Graflex wooden holders in the original wrapping. I don't think the camera had been used as there was no evidence any holder had ever been inserted in the back. Got this package for $800.

Both came from little antique stores.

The best find I've bought was a Canon IVsb + 50/f1.8 + 85/f2 with cases and the finder for the 85 for $120. Foolishly, I decided against the needed CLA and sold it as it was for a small profit. Now I get the "joy" of finding another IV and probably paying just about what I would have spent before.
I was given a Kodak Retina IIIC with its case and manual along with a non functioning Bantam Special.

Thought I almost had a good find on eBay, but I can see that no matter how poorly labeled something is, people will find it and bid on it.

A 3-day listing on a very poorly labeled Nikkor 35/1.8 in LSM (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=310147467126)with M adapter went from $15 to $380 in the last 10 minutes. Due to the risk that it could really be crap shape, I didn't rebid after another guy outbid me, but then someone else outbid him in the closing seconds.

I'm not sure of the value of this lens. The notoriously overpriced goKevincameras tries to sell one for $1450, so I figure if it is in nice shape it'll sell for at least $800.

That's too weird. Usually Leica gear commands pretty decent prices on eBay if the condition is good. I wonder if there's an explanation. He may have had a very high starting bid, that often discourages bidding.

A certain well-known local LA area camera store here liquidated a few weeks ago and there were patrons walking out with Leica M3's and such purchased for $25 (I saw one too - beautiful it was - sadly I was not among the buyers!) With management like that it's no wonder they went out of business.

Thirteen years ago I got a perfect 35RC for £2.

Last summer I was fortunate to hand over £10 for an immaculate & fully functional Pen FT kit including the 40mm f1.4 & 150mm f4 with erc & lens caps/cases. Combined value based on recent eBay activity is up to around £550 but appears to be much higher in Germany & USA.

A week later via FreeCycle a boxed, unused Nikon F75 with Nikkor G 28-100 came from one donor (worth up to £125) & on the same day a used but serviced Nikon N8008s with Nikkor 35mm f2, Nikkor 300mm f4.5 & Sigma AF 24mm f2.8, in all worth around £260. As FreeCycle suggests, all for nowt!

In the last week on eBay I've bought a Zuiko 50-90mm zoom for the Pen FT for £22. It's certainly worth more than that.

Not super cheap but hard to find stuff in this condition!

There's actually been three. I've conveniently forgotten the scores of krappy kameras.

A Knoica C-35 that I bought in a thrift store for $5 and it took some outstanding photos. Best travel camera we ever had, and I have a couple of 12x18 prints on the wall w/ Tri-X that are just great. The lens on these is very sharp.

My first real camera, a Canon AE-1 w/ a 50 1.8 lens. Bought it in a Savannah thrift store for $13.50, complete w/ battery and hippie strap. They even took an out of town check for it. It taught me about exposure, and I have a nice big print on the wall from it also.

My newest and probably best bargain. A Bessa II w/ Color Heliar lens. Bought it from KEH (couldn't find one in a thrift store) in Bgn condition for $395. The speeds were supposed to be off but it exposes perfectly and looks very presentable. Amazing lens on the thing and 6x9 is nearly LF. I just love this camera and will never, ever sell it.

I think all my buys have been pretty good, but nothing compared to what I've read so far. 35mm skopar, mint, for something like $140 with m adapter, a nikkor 135/3.5 and canon 100/3.5 for $180, 1958 M2 for $400. My summarit was $225 with filters and a hood which despite the bad rep of the lens, I find to be a great deal.

I found quite a few here in Brazil:
mint canon 7sz with 50/0.95 and erc for 250$
mint rolleiflex T for 100$
leica 1c with elmar 50, 50 finder and rangefinder, plus erc for 100$
leica m4 with summilux 50 and summaron 35 for 1100$
fujica g690 and g670 + 150, 100 and 55mm lenses for 750$. sold the 55 alone for over 1200 euros (this is one of the rarest of lenses)

I don't think I've posted this before byut apart from my M2 which was the best £300 I think I ever spent (or perhaps on a practical note my Ford Escort, all £150 of it has given me 5 years of very reliable problem free motoring...) but recently I picked up a Canon Serenar 50mm (chrome version, before it got revamped with black bits on the barrel), paid £42 + postage and it's the best 50mm I have ever had.

Sharp and pretty flare resistant, and not too contrasty to give me some room for manouvre when printing but not too wishy washy to be too flat. It compliments my Summar for when I really want the classic look.

It's not perfect, the chrome has gone a bit iffy on some very small small patches and the focussing whilst more or less smooth can on the odd occassion be a bit resistant.

Otherwise, cracking bit of glass. I don't feel any need at all for a CV Nokton 50mm or even a Summicron from my current experiences with it.

I got call from an antique dealer I know. "Want to buy a sack of old cameras for $500?" I went by his shop and quickly became the proud owner of a Leica CL with a 40mm Summicron, M2 body, M3 body, a 90/2.8 Elmarit, 135/2.8 Elmarit, 28/2.8 black paint Wetzlar Elmarit, along with cases, hoods, an assortment of filters, Rollei 35, Hasselblad meter prism, 150 Sonnar, 50mm Distagon, hoods, 12 exposure back, 6 or 7 Leica cassettes...it was a good deal! And all in great condition. An hour later my camera repair guy swapped the Hasselblad stuff for $600 cash and CLA's on the Leica bodies as needed.

I later found out that the antique dealer thought it might be worth decent money when I didn't counter offer $200 or $300 instead of just giving him the $500 he was asking. He'd bought the whole lot at an estate auction. Nobody else even bid on it. His winning bid was $25.

Some people in the antique business will buy the entire contents of a house when somebody dies. "Everything" includes what's in the basement, attic, garage, closets, stacks of boxes in the back bedroom, lawnmower, whatever.

They'll cherry pick through it, hold an estate sale, give some to charity, but a lot of it they have no real knowledge about, like cameras. A few years ago I had a deal with one shop where I'd I.D. the photo stuff, photograph it and write the copy for an ebay listing in exchange for 10% of the selling price. She started selling things for decent money that she'd have otherwise considered worthless junk. Unfortunately she died too.

Anyway, it pays to get friendly with some antique dealers.

It must be a pair of Kievs which looked pretty rough from a UK seller - one of which was a rare first type 1957 Kiev 4 , the other an OK Kiev IIIa .
Both for £66 ... which I found to be much better than the pics and that the IIIa is '' number only '' without all the clutter of Made in USSR etc .
Finding a '57 is difficiult - finding a working one for £33 is a bargain .
Funny how something so modest can be so satisfying .

I was in this thread earlier, but yesterday while going over some prices on Leica M5s I realised I got real lucky last Christmas, buying mine for only EUR 300.
It came with three 39mm Leica filters, the box and the neck strap. It's as old as me, 1971 was a good year :)
I sold the filters for EUR 60 since I don't own any 39mm lenses. The M5 has the previous owners gripping worn into the black chrome, the seal is still intact. Works like a charm.

I have posted in similar threads about the Rolleiflex, Pentax SV, Soligor 400mm preset, and some off brand 35mm, all for $25.

Two Contax T* 50mm f/1.4 for $20 each, and one week later, two more for $15 each.

A Yashica FX 103 for $15.

A Fujica ST901, ST801, Fujica 50mm f/1.4, Fujica 35mm f/2.8, two Vivitar flashes, all in a leather carrying case, for a little over $100.

More recently, an Olympus XA listed simply as an Olympus, together with two other nowhere el cheapo cameras for about $22.
And a 4x5 Chromega enlarger with 4x5 film holder and stabilizer for $50.

When one is patient, there are good deals to be found. And of course what I consider to be a bargain might be non-interesting stuff to be avoided to another. Also I have missed a lot of good deals, for I don't know how much, but outbid for sometimes as little as $1.00. But I don't know how high my competition went. Only it was more than what I was willing to pay.

A late production dual range Summicron, new, in box for $500. Got it several years ago at Ball Photo in Asheville NC. It's a beautiful lens with perfect glass and a lovely fit and finish. I used it a few times with the goggles when my daughter was a newborn, other than those few rolls it's still new. This was just after the owner, Mr. Ball had died. He was a wonderful character but this was the only good deal I got from him in 25 years as a customer. Joe

A few years ago I picked up a Nikon S3 with 5cm 1.4 and Jupiter 35mm 2.8 lenses at a local camera club swap meet for $250. Excellent condition with just a few small dings in the chrome. Funny, no one else there seemed too interested in the seller's table - he had a bunch of other Nikon stuff, several F bodies for around $100 and a number of older Nikkor F-mount lenses for even less. I never took to the S3, though and ended up selling the lot on *bay for $1200. Had a heck of a time seeing the rangefinder patch, so it probably needed a good cleaning. I did finally see the light, however and bought an M2 with 50mm Summicron this year - the viewfinder/rangefinder is worlds better IMHO and a total joy to shoot with.

I had good luck with my Spotmatic II. I found it online for $80. Cosmetically, it looked almost new as did the 50f1.4 Super-Multi-Coated Takumar included (w/ correct hood, caps, and pentax filter). The seller said that he just had it CLA'd and would include the invoice. When I got the camera, it operated absolutely perfectly. The invoice was from ACR in Texas from the year before and the service was for a complete restoration totalling nearly $300! Looking to add some lenses, I came across a deal for a 28f3.5, 135f3.5 and 200f4 for $100 - all Super-Multi-Coated Takumars complete with original hoods, caps, and cases all in beautiful condition. Later, I came across a 400f5.6 for $60.

I decided to splurge on the 85f1.8 and a Hirano case though. But why not? I've NEVER enjoyed using an SLR until I got this Spotmatic.

This probably doesn't mean much to most people on here, but I bought a box at a country auction for $5 that contained a brass Darlot Paris Petzaval lens with hood and mounting flange and a brass Waterbury No. 1C Landscape lens by Scoville Mfg. Co that has 3 aperature discs.

At this same auction I bought a Leica IIIc with 50mm F2.0 Summitar for $75. I think the brass lens box was a better deal.

recently an Olympus XA-1 for $1 (probably all they're worth though really, ha) and an LPL 35mm enlarger for free, plus loads of other darkroom gear here and there that I seem to inherit. Also a massive Manfrotto Studio tripod that had been collecting dust in the IT storage cage at my old work for many, many years.

and a Minolta Sr-T 100x with 45mm F2 Rokkor pancake lens that I was given for free when I was fired from my first job as a kid (working in a local camera store). business had slowed down in winter and the boss felt bad for letting me go, so let me have one of the secondhand cameras they had.

Hmmm What constitutes a bargain ?

Market price , £50, for a camera which is just that little bit special -mint Kiev 4a in TOE box with all documents ?
A reasonable £60 price for an unexpectedly near mint KNeB II ?
Both of which are more than useable .
Even recreating my own dream Contax II by the guys in Arsenal at an ' affordable ' cost ?
£15 for a 35mm f 1.8 Rokkor , or a pair of new md Vivitars 24 / 28 at £ 25 each ?
Or £5.00 each for a few Mju 1 and Trip 35s which will probably never be used again ?

At the local thrift store I managed to find a Contax IIIA with a 50mm f1.5 Opton. After a little more searching there was the Biogon 35mm f2.8 with it's finder.

The 50mm lens' glass is absolutely perfect but the barrel has a tiny dent. The Opton is flawless and has the 35mm finder.
The camera itself is pretty good for something almost 60 years old. Two "Zeiss" bumps on the back and the finder needs alignment. The meter reads a little high (!) and the slow escapement was easy to repair myself. Speeds are quite good, now.

Then later I found a very, very nice Black Spotmatic II c/w a 50mm 1.4 Takumar. The lens has the famous orange discoloration, but I think I can fix with UV light or leave in the sun for a while.

Not sure about the Spotmatic but I'll not be selling the Contax.

Never, ever tell us what you paid for that Contax kit :)

I just got an "as-is" grade Pentax ME Super SE from KEH for $1.49 (yes, one dot 49). Described as advance not working, untested. It arrived with the advance in perfect order. I guess the ride in the FedEx truck repaired it. With a fresh set of batteries, it seems to be working flawlessly. Foam is going, though, so I'm prepared for light leaks on my first roll.

Let's hear it for KEH As-Is. In the same shipment, I also got a Hexanon AR 40/1.8 pancake lens for $7. It's missing the inspection sticker and has some specks of internal dust, that's all.

I have no argument with the fact that that price is a steal compared with its original new price, but it is about par for the course these days. I bought my F100 in near-mint condition three years ago for US$299. If I could justify the need I would be buying more. An Olympus 35SP, 35RD and 35RC for $3 each. The RC was in good condition but the SP and RD still need CLAs to deal with oily blades, oil replacement, etc so the 'deal' part of that is borderline. I should probably sell the SP to fund the RD repair, but I've never shot an SP before... and I hate giving up cameras before I've shot them.. hah. :)

An Olympus XA and 35DC for 6$ each at thrift stories. The DC was the first camera I spent a bunch of time repairing. It was why I started looking for an RD.

I have no idea why why my lucky finds have been so Olympus focused. I love the cameras but it is totally disproportionate.

Most of my other 'good deals' have turned out to be rather mediocre ones in the end due to the condition of the items.

I have always wanted to try a Leica but never had the money. Well...
I went to a yard sale 2 weekends ago and was lucky enough to be the first person to arrive. A lady was selling her "old" cameras and didn't want them anymore. It was 2 Leica cameras. An R4s and a classic M6. She also had 4 Leica lenses to go along with the cameras.

The two bags came along as well. I paid $200 for everything. I am holding onto the M6 and the two M lenses. I will be selling the R4s and 2 lenses and black Leica leather bag in the next couple of weeks.

The 28mm Elmarit-M is missing the focusing tab, so the focusing ring is loose. I will be sending it off to either DAG or Sherry. It seems like that is who most people recommend.

This will be my first experience with a rangefinder.

I got a good deal on most of my gear, though nothing like the post above me.

M2 with hole in shutter curtain for $400, repaired it myself
M5 with working meter, no issues, $500
Bessa R, missing self timer lever, otherwise fine, $200
35/1.7 Ultron, wobbly front and stiff focus, $180, fixed the focus and wobbly front
50/1.5 Summarit, cleaning marks on front element, $200
Pair of Perfect J8's of different vintages, ~$15ish
Canon 85/1.9 $100ish

I'm happy with what I've paid for all my gear, though the repair costs on the M2 have been killing me, thinking I'm going to just shelve it. It hit pavement from a foot and the viewfinder died, nice $250 repair, previously had to have the rangefinder arm replaced for around $200ish, could've just gotten a m6 instead.

I've often wondered how that guy stays in business. I've watched literally dozens of his listings (mostly stuff related to Olympus Pen SLRs and classic RFs) over the past few years and never has even a single item sold. I've never even bid because typically the opening bids are ridiculously expensive. Even when nothing sells, you still have to pay the listing fees.
Kevin Camera's actually has quite brisk sales - at least a few thousand dollars per week - just look at his completed listings on eBay, and that does not include his off-eBay sales. Listing on eBay is not expensive, they take most of their cut with final value fees (which are outrageous).

I posted this elsewhere a few days ago. It is my best yard sale find of all time. I've had some good ones, but nothing compared to this.

Elmarit-M 28mm f/2.8 (with hood)
Elmarit-M 90mm f/2.8,
Summicron-R 50mm f/2 (with e55 p-cir polarizing filter)
Elmarit-R 28mm f/2.8.

Are you serious?! I had to save my money for months before I could buy an M6. You're very lucky! Congrats dude. It's a beautiful camera. :)

Minolta Hi-Matic 9 on ebay for $2.50

Yashica FX-D with ML 50mm 1.9, Vivitar 2300 flash, and Tamron 80-210 zoom for $2.00 at a garage sale.

Another perfect FX-D on ebay for $8.00. It was listed as "broken, film advance jammed". I will buy "jammed" FX-D's all day, FX-D cameras won't work without a battery. ;)

And just today, the mailman delivered a Ricoh Singlex TLS that I won for $4.94. The camera is a very usable "user condition" camera with lots of character. But the Super Takumar 50mm 1.4 that was attached to the front of it is perfect. :-D

The mailman also brought a very rare and excellent Yashinon Tomioka DX 50mm 1:2 screwmount (or as the seller described it, a "really cool Deco-style lens"), that I won for $9.00. :)

I missed out on a black Zenit-S (or as the seller described it, a "Zehum C" (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=110562458425&ssPageName=STRK:MEDWX:IT#ht_500wt_1182)) that eventually sold for $34 the other day when I had bid $30. I really wanted that one, I have never seen a black Zenit-S before, and it is so, so, pretty. And I also was outbid an an "old Yoghunder camera" (which was actually a very nice Voigtländer Vitessa).

I realize that none of the above are really valuable in dollars-and-cents terms (no $50 Leicas for me yet), but as a neophyte collector with a limited budget, they are all treasures to me.

i consider myself quite lucky. I usually am patient and spend fixed amount of time a day to scan for things that i want but only at the price that i want to buy. This has resulted in more hits than misses.

Hits:
Pristine Black SL with 50mm Summicron for 400
Pristine IIIF for 230
500CM with Planar, around 700
Canon 50 1.5f for 100
M3 with slow speed off, and hazy VF, 400 + 120 for CLA
Making friends with Brian, and he fixed my J8 and I50R

Misses:
Leica CM with a faulty battery drain, returned and refunded
Scratchy Summicron Collapsible from KEH, returned and changed for a DR
Summicron 40 + CL, found out the CL was completely frozen but 40 Cron in good condition -- paid 400 which is the going price for the lens
Most Russian lens though inexpensive, are not well maintained, really infuriating at times.
Sun Sola lens bought cheap with a bad chip, causing no end to flare.

Just found a Beseler 23CII enlarger with 50mm Nikkor lens for $38. They still sell them new for $800 or so, without the lens. I don't need this, since I already have a couple of enlargers for 35mm and 2 1/4, but one of my students will buy it, I'm sure!

I've had several great finds but I think the best was a Minox B for $200 it came with an unused Rollei 3.5f in new case, etc. If I sell the Minox for $100 it gets better.

The Rollei probably never had a roll through it. It was taken in as collateral on a loan years before. The bad news is the guy sold "an old Leica" the day before. My Dad bought a 10.3 Mountain Elmar for $3 years ago.

i picked up my Zorki M3 for £35 at an antique camera shop, a pretty good price as i knew the people there, but the bargain came the next day at my workplace (another camera shop) a woman came in with a Zorki 4K and a host of acsessorys, i bought the lot for £25, so my total spend was £60.

the acsessorys included a Leningrad meter, the Zorki turret finder, and a Jupiter 8 1:2/50mm and i managed to sell the Zorki 4K and a couple of the bits (mainly stuff i already had) for £25

so i was £35 out of pocket, and had the Zorki M3, J-8 lens with a Hoya hood and the turret finder, i was pretty chuffed

Last was yesterday, when I got three yellow series V Wratten filters, another same series from Tiffen plus the adapter, a couple (red and green) Wratten series VIII filters, a Lifa green square (6x6 cm) filter, another no name yellow (6x9 cm), a Hasselblad accesory for f. screen (I guess that´s what it is), an angle finder and a wide angle Old Delft finder body (no lens), and two Zeiss Contaflex shades for USD 20.
The previous one (and I must admit I´m still recovering my breath from the excitation it caused) was when I bought a Kodak Medalist II for USD 25.
Old stuff is definitely underrated both pricewise and photographically due to the migration to digital. What was unaffordable yesterday is today almost a gift.
Cheers

Ten years ago a friend phoned to say he had found a Nikon at a garage sale, and were they any good? After a couple of questions I established it was a rangefinder and a couple of questions later, an SP. He said it was very dirty but I offered him AU$450. He took the offer and said that he only expected to get $250 for it! Still my favorite user camera and the 2/50 Nikkor is brilliant.

Just stumbled on this thread. Read it through and it's depressing me a little bit.

The best bargain I ever had I vanished in front of my eyes. I was at a flea market and found a box with some compacts, rummaged around and found a Revue 400 SE 25 in wonderful shape. Tested the shutter, aperture, film advance - no problems. Peered inside and the only bad thing was the gummy light seals. I really had to restrain myself to camly ask for the price.

The seller wanted 15EUR for it. At first I wanted to pay for it right away, but I got stupid, pressed my luck and tried bargaining him down to 10EUR.
And that got him really mad! He started shouting at me how sick and tired he is of everybody driving the prices down for perfectly good cameras. He'd rather not sell anything for that money. "This isn't ebay!" he said, grabbed the camera from me and started packing up his stuff to leave, muttering the whole time.

I was pretty pleased getting a mint 1961 Yashica J with original case for $40 on the auction site not long ago. I bought a 1941 Leitz Summitar from Sherry Krauter with original caps an a yellow filter (and a recent CLA) for $175. And I ended up paying just $694 for a lovely M4 (one of the first couple thousand) in a surprise auction win from Samy's. I actually paid $759 but they refunded me $65 for a rangefinder adjustment when I noted the infinity focus was off a hair.

Congrats Roberto. That one is almost painful to hear about. I'm glad I only have a IIIc - that takes the edge off. :) Though... if I did pick that up for that price, I could justify buying a M instantly just to use the lens.

That said, I did get a nice little package today. I picked up about 215 rolls of 120 color film (Centuria Super 100, Fujichrome 64T and Portra) for $75. Not the same sort of win but its something.

$15 Hexar AF at a flea market.
$2100 Leica M6 classic with 35/2, 50/2, 90/2.8 and flash - all in near mint condition. Not exactly a giveaway, but a very fine price, though. It's still a bargain in my eyes.
$20 Industar 69 - not 'worth' that much more in fiat money, but certainly in user value.
$5 Olympus Mju 2, minty in box.

Going to another flea market now. Hope I have more to tell when I return.

Olympus OM-1 with 50mm 1.8, 135mm 2.8, Kiron 28-105mm and 24 2.8 for $50.

Olympus XA w/flash at Value Village for $20.

Some of the interesting cameras which still work are an Olympus SP, and two small Olympus Pens. A black Yashica GX, a Yashica GL, and a few Electro 35s of various types. 3 Minolta Hi-matic E cameras, including a black one. A Ricoh 500 G, three Yashica Ministers, a Petri, and a few others which I can't recall. Other arrivals were another Yashica GX, a Yashica CCN, and an Olympus 35 DC. I'll be sorting through all these cameras for the next few days, cleaning them up and getting the resealed, tested, and ready to use. The 3 lenses were old Minolta MC Rokkors, which will go well with my SRT 101.

It may be an evil SLR but I thought I should investigate one of these new fangled displays and custom functions so chose a Nikon F100. Picked one up for £120 in as new condition. First impressions are how fast the autofocus is, I have an F4, how I wish I could separate the autofocus from the shutter on that camera and how one can spend hours deciding if the film should wind on when loaded or wait 'till I trip the shutter, I never knew I cared ;)
Of course I picked up the M2 to join me going out this morning they seem to have pared that down to all that is needed for me. Even the M8 seems a model of simplicity and I usually curse those menu options.

Other was a new metal lenshood for the Summicron f2 Asph 21mm. The Leica box shape thing came apart and they want £175 for a new one PLUS £22 for the cap. This one, from China, came for £5.70 and doesn't block the finder as much either.

So an new lenshood and nearly state of the art film SLR for less than a Leica part
