View Full Version : Anyone got this new Ricoh p&s toy?
Like a lot here, I'm still waiting for that 'perfect' digi p&s pocket camera that will make me leave that heavy Billingham at home!. Just read an ad. for the new Ricoh CX1, apparently it can take two shots in succession, and make a HDR image that "gives an almost naked eye impression" - and a CMOS sensor!.....wow! - anyone bought one yet?, or read a report?
I like the GRd v2 too much to switch.
It sounds like a camera with some potential, but first, if the subject is moving rapidly, the high dynamic range feature will have trouble, because, as you say, the camera is taking two exposures in succession.
Second, the camera has no RAW files, which rules it out for me.
No RAW rules it out for me too.
I dont care so much about the raw but I dont like the idea of taking two shots and then sticking them together, there is a lot of potential for bad results there just from breathing too much when taking a picture. No...the CX1 doesnt quite cut the mustard yet, maybe you should check out a Fuji f200 EXR
I have the CX1 and it is a fantastic camera, the controls are great, the AF is fast and it is a pleasure to use.
The DR mode is a mixed bag however, it works great for static subjects but you need to understand the limitations of this mode. Sometimes you can get better results and more dynamic range by just watching your exposure carefully and checking the histogram.
I can recommend it but the decision to buy it should not be based on the DR mode it has.
You can read more of my impressions here, I will post more about the camera and other features including more on the DR mode soon: http://ricohgrdiary.wordpress.com/
Below are two examples of where the DR mode works well. These were taking hand held but for best results you should use a tripod.
