View Full Version : The 40mm M-Rokkor CLE [some snaps]...

I mostly take photos at night after work, either with the 35mm Summilux pre-ASPH or the Noctilux. Out of both, I find it easier to use a 50mm lens, it suits my perception better. Since the Noctilux is heavy and not the easiest choice for street photography, I was always thinking about getting a second 50mm lens like the 50mm Summicron-M. Then reading some older threads here I remembered that there is a 40mm M-Rokkor CLE in my cabinet, that I barely use ...

40mm is inbetween the 35 and 50, no M-Leica has frame lines for it but the lens is very small, sharp and fun to use. So I thought it might be better to give the M-Rokkor a spin before buying another lens. :D

Some of the following photos were taken in "snap-shot" mode, pre-set exposure, focus set to 3m and the camera secured with a wrist-strap in my right. I was either holding an umbrella or had some shopping bags in my left hand so no chance for focussing, just aim, shot and rewind.

Some of these have a great feel, like you are right in the midst of street action--which you were! I like the leaflet, umbrella, and "Lawson."

I own a 40mm Rokkor and find it challenging to shoot w/ out the frame lines on my MP and M4. But then you kind of let go of that rigidity, and it becomes a snapshot, fun shooting lens. I think you achieved this.

If you are looking for a fast-handling, relatively fast 50 for night work, then I can't recommend the last pre-asph. summilux enough.

jja, thank you for the compliments !:)

I had the 50mm Summilux pre-ASPH (latest E46 with integrated hood) but sold it to raise some founds for the Noctilux. It was a great lens for sure but I couldn't afford having both ...

Hey, very nice. Just curious, these were snapped on the CLE? I was a bit confused b/c the thread was under the forum relating to the Hexar RF . . . Thanks, now I'll consider a 40.

No, they were taken with normal M Leicas (M2 and M5) but since the lens is made by Minolta I thought it fits better into this forum.

Nice shots, Gabor. I particularly like #5 and #7 for atmospherics. Impressive examples of night-time photography: what film are you using?

I've had a Rokkor-M 40/2 (CLE version) for about six months now, and I'm completely won over. I like it so much that I got an R3A for the 40mm framelines, and a 40 finder so I can use the lens on my Bessa T. I also use it on the M2. It sings in color and b&w:

Steve, these are great !! I like especially your first one ! :)

My BW shots were taken with Fujifilm's Neopan Superpresto 1600PR (rated at 1600ISO) and developed in Diafine. When shooting BW I don't care so much about exposure anymore, one two meter readings in the beginning and that's it.

maddoc, your flickr photos were instrumental in my decision to take the plunge and buy astroman's 40mm M-Rokkor.

As an M2 user, I spent countless hours debating the merits of the 40mm and the frameline issue, but in the end simple economics won out - I can't afford a Summicron right now. Textbooks are expensive, and I'd rather travel and go out with friends using the 40mm than be stuck at home fondling a 35mm.

Also, since I wear glasses, I can't see the full 35mm framelines anyway - what I do see is more probably quite close to 40mm.

Now all I have to do is wait for the mail...

Cheers.

haha, maddoc, again we bought the same gear. the only difference is that i didn't get the m-rokkor lens, only the cle camera.

one of my friends is asking about the cle too, for he wanted to have a camera to use the m-mount lenses with, but smaller than the m6.

i think the price of 2nd-hand cle is going up.... :p

You where ***that*** much faster than me in getting that 40mm :)

Congrats, and good luck with the lens. If it does not work out, I'm also in Canberra and maybe that lens can get back onto its rightful "owner" (I mean, the CLE that it came from) :)

It was photos from this lens that go me back to film (and down the Leica paved road to financial ruin)

What were the different M-Rokkor 40mm lenses and how do you distinguish between them? Were the first ones single-coated and the later ones multi-coated?

(Trying to figure out what I have)

If the serial number is on the lens barrel instead of the front of the lens, it's the later (CLE) version. This version was multi-coated. The earlier version, for the CL, was a contemporary of the summicron-c, and is often said to be single-coated, but I think there's some question about that.

What is the difference between a single coated lens such as the C-Summicron 40/2 and a multi coated lens such as the later Rokkor 40/2?

maddoc
04-07-2009, 07:53
What is the difference between a single coated lens such as the C-Summicron 40/2 and a multi coated lens such as the later Rokkor 40/2?

I had the 40mm C-Summicron before and now have the 40mm M-Rokkor CLE. From my experience the multicoated M-Rokkor delivers higher contrast and is less prone to flare. Additionally, it has the normal cam for rangefinder coupling and takes 40.5mm filters (the C-Summicron takes series 5.5 filters, which are hard to get)

400mm - thats one loooong lens for a Hexar ;)

04-10-2009, 03:42
I did on my summicron-c and it fits well. I never understood the "I want a 40mm because it's between 35 and 50" as it's very close to 35mm except for short distances. In fact the 40mm cover just inside the 35mm frameline when 35mm cover the outer side of those lines. You just have to be careful when shooting between 0.7m and about 2m.

igor krimov
04-10-2009, 06:25
in my case story was like this - I bought hexar rf body and will not eat anything next 6 months and I have to have lens to take photos with, right? So I ended up with this little jewel, cheap really. for me it's really ok that 40mm and I don't mint so...

Gary E
04-17-2009, 18:33
I used to use the 40 Summicron-C on an M3DS and just shot with the 50 frameline as a tight crop. It is still my favorite lens though a more friendly filter thread would have been nice to get from Leica.

Gabor - I'm curious about your "snapshot" settings. When you preset your exposure for night shots, what values are you setting? And are you using hyperfocal distance for focus?

It depends on the film (and location !) In Sapporo, a big and at night well illuminated city, 400ISO were good for f/1.0 and 1/60s or f/1.4 and 1/30s and 1600ISO for f/4.0 and 1/15s. With focus set to 3m (for me ideal when using 50mm or 40mm lenses), I was ready to go. :)

+1 as well. I was thinking it impressive that you must have stopped down a fair bit to get that much depth of field, which must have implied a pretty long exposure at night, yet you managed to hand-hold quite steadily. Nice picture!

Finally got some time in the darkroom to print my last roll of summer shots. I was pleased with the frames I took of a field of pitcher plants (Darlingtonia) near Florence, OR. The combination of forest shadow and direct sunlight on the pitchers is especially good in the wet prints. This is a flatbed scan, poor substitute but gives a good feel for the contrast quality with the 40mm M-Rokkor.

I use mine just like a 35mm. No problems with framing on the M9 after filing the flange. It makes a nice light-weight travel lens. Very contrasty and flare resistant. Good for landscapes. I prefer the 35/1.2 Nokton and/or Jupter 3 50/1.5 for people shots because both have much better bokeh than the 40/2 CLE which can give that awkward double-edge effect to objects in the middle distance background.

Lots of lovely photos. I particularly like the umbrellas and the umbrella in the rain.

I have two 40mm ... the M-Rokkor 40/2 II from the CLE and a Voigtländer Nokton 40/1.4 MC. I use the M-Rokkor 40 on my CL body the most ... it has the right framelines for it ... and I use the Nokton 40 on the M9 and GXR-M about interchangeably. I filed the frameline cam in the Nokton so that it brings up the 35mm frame lines on the M9, which seem to suit the actual FoV pretty well for my eyes (with glasses). On the GXR, it's more a 'long-normal'—one of my favorite focal lengths on APS-C format.

It's hard to go wrong with one of these lenses. Let go of the frameline issue, learn what the lens sees, and just go with it. :-)
