Hello everybody....I just bought this lens the other day and I am pretty happy with the results so far. I have never shot with a 35mm focal length lens before and it is starting to grow on me. I am going to go to Laos next week for a photo trip and I plan on taking this lens with me. As for now, I'm carrying it everywhere I go so I can get used to it. Here are a couple of shots that were taken in my neighborhood. I would love to see what others are doing with this lens as well...please excuse the poor scans (local lab)...I am in the process of purchasing a scanner......
cheers, michael
The performance of the lens is good, both for sharpness at the focussed distance and for out-of-focus areas. I assume that the pictures were taken at or near full open aperture. My guess is that you won't part with this lens too soon.

Sorry, I think the title of my post could be a bit misleading....not all of the shots above were taken at 1.2.....I am going to edit the original post now.......cheers, michael....
I've been wanting this lens for a long time..... this post may push me over the line.... your fault )

Thanks Dexter.....the film is xp2 and Fuji pro plus II (100).....
I am curious to know, how often do users of this lens shoot wide open?
cheers, michael......

I use it wide open quite often (one of the main but by no means exclusive reasons to put up with The Beast), especially on the M8 when I'm trying to eek out every last bit of light to avoid the dreaded banding of high iso shots in dim lit interiors. On film it produces a distinctively elegant softness with smooth transitions and inimitable depth of field effects.

The bokeh looks pretty intact. Michael, what is your general lens since you say you never shot w the 35?

The bokeh looks pretty intact. Michael, what is your general lens since you say you never shot w the 35?
Good question...well, for the last 3 months since I came back from the states, I have been shooting mostly with a 50mm summicron rigid (thanks to MikeL)...but that doesn't really count...
For the last 7-9 years I have been shooting with a cv 15mm, 28mm elmarit v3, 50mm summilux v1 and an old version of the 90mm summicron...I never really felt the need for a 35mm focal length lens...but a local store had a couple of these lenses (35mm 1.2) in chrome for about 720 usd and I had been thinking about purchasing one for the last 2 months...well, the other day I asked how many they had left in stock, and he said one...so, I figured what the heck...I am never going to be able to buy a brand new one for this price, so I bought it...Everything in Bangkok that concerns Leica (or rangefinder gear) is more expensive than back in the states...with this one lens being the exception....It is a big lens, but it's still smaller than my 90mm summicron, and it fits good in my hands... that said, I usually buy Leica lenses if I can, but since Leica doesn't make such a lens and it is sort of a specialty lens, I figured why not....cheers, michael

heres mine all on wide open,
Michael, buck pago, nice shots from both of you !!
About the 35/1.2 ... How big is the difference between f/1.2 and f/1.4 in practical use ? When comparing to one of the small 35/1.4 lenses out there (35mm Summilux pre-ASPH, CV 35/1.4 MC & SC), does the advantage of having f/1.2 justify for the larger size and weight of the 35/1.2 ?

I think in this particular case of CV 35/1.2, its not just advantage of 1.2 vs 1.4, but rather the signature of this particular lens. I dont know any other lens that draws quite like it. Plus, yes - in some cases it does make a difference - here in caves it did to me:

Hello Gabor, and thanks for the compliment.....I am probably not the right person to answer this question because I have never had a small 35mm lens before...but one of the main reasons that I bought this lens is along the lines of what Krosya said about its look (signature)....and the fact that I wanted a fast lens...that said, as far as how I shoot and my style is concerned, will 1.2 make a difference to me instead of 1.4, probably not.....but I am going to try to use this lens to create some images that my other lenses wont allow me to do, I think that is one of the main reasons for me buying this lens...that and the fact that I wanted to try a 35mm focal length to see what I am missing.......and it was at a good price ....I guess when I add it all up....I blame it on GAS...cheers, michael

Your pictures have really gotten me on a real hunger for this lens too!
Price and size have somewhat thrown me off and made me look at the Canon 1.2, but after looking at your photos i'm really taking a liking to this lens.
It renders portraits beautifully at both 1.2 and 1.4
Forget size concerns, i'm definitely gunning for this one now!
P.s. - Bokeh signature reminds me of my own M-hexanon f2 (which i love) , but of course at f2, how is it ever enough?!

I love the shots, shallow depth of field with a 35mm = perfect for me. this looks like a great lens and its a relative bargain, shame its so big. lovely looking subject, you're lucky she poses for photos mine hate me taking her picture :(

Hey Mike...thanks for the m3 again, it performed excellent in laos with the 50mm rigid and the 90mm summicron.....as far as the 35mm focal length goes, it's starting to grow on me...but I don't feel right having a 28/35/50 with me,,,it throws things off for me....I think it is either a 35mm or a 28/50...anyways.....here is another one from the nokton....

What a great lens; the difference between 1.4 and 1.2 is minor except when you've maxed out your ISO and are shooting at 1/8th of a second, right then, it makes a difference.
I mostly find that short of the 35mm Summilux ASPH, its the only super fast 35 that's sharp wide open. I compared it to a 35 Summilux ASPH and found it to be just a hair less sharp, but put it this way, it would have been impossible for me to tell them apart if i hadn't written it down. The two lens' perform just stunningly and this lens is just a steal compared to the ASPH. The size is the only caveat.

"Excellent photo. It's sweet and sensual. The portrait is fabulous and looks very candid. The bokeh is wonderful, even on the Apple insignia. Well Done."

Thanks Joe, I appreciate it....I am sure she will be happy to read your post...
I am still getting used to this lens and its signature (look)....one of the reasons that I purchased this lens was to create photos like the one below of the car....obviously, I don't want all of my pictures to be shot at 1.2 and to have the look of the photo below, but sometimes, it just seems right.....

Nobody has mentioned it's low contrast yet. This is one of the things I love most about the Nokton 1.2, so much detail can be retained in the shadows and highlights even when on the M8. I also have the v.4 Summicron ( so called King Of Bokeh ) yet I use it less and less now I have the Nokton.
It may be big for an RF lens but it's nothing compared to most SLR lenses and as such sits permanently on one of my M6 bodies.
...and as for it's 'look,' utterly beautiful!

I agree! except for the contrast being 'low', I think it actually can be quite strong (even at f1.2) and STILL show that amount of detail, which is even better imho =)
it became my n° lens from the first minute I used it mine!

One reason I really like using the Nokton 35/1.2 as my 'do everything 35mm' is when using Tri-X EI 400, I can set the shutter speed of the M5 at 1/1000sec and forget about it, simply adjust the aperture and pretty never run out of light until I enter a dark building, simply keep opening the aperture until I hit f1.2. Of course, there are times, I will bring down the shutter speed to gain more depth-of-field, but for quick, hurried shooting it works like a charm. At least for me.
That is all for now!

I am wondering, how much does this lense block the viewfinder with the "normal" shade on it? I need a 35 for my M and I am looking for a 1.2, Ultron 1.7 or a 2.5 Skopar...
Not to much blocking of the vieuwfinder with the normal shade. Perhaps 1/6 the with or without shade.

The Nokton is big and makes my M6 front heavy, but it's been a revelation for me - the creaminess of an older, fast Leica lens combined with the sharpness of a modern design. I don't know that a comparison to the 35 2.5 is fair - I think you could pretty easily justify having both, the Nokton for its dreamy signature and the Skopar for its sharpness in an ultra-compact housing.
I've had the Nokton for a few months and love it...

I thought I had done enough research on RFF and then got the lens from Cameraquest. After shooting around and making comparisons with my 35 cron ASPH, I just can't persuade myself keeping it. Bulky and too heavy on MP, even on my R-d1s...
Finally decide to part with this gem...:(

the nokton 35mm f1.2 is my fourth 35mm lens and (never say never) i think i can stop thinking about changing hardware at this focal length. why?
i had it modified (stiff focus issue on m8 on earlier lenses) and 6-bit coded in the netherlands for around €100+. very professional, works like a charm on the m8
it handles very well (focus/aperture) and is, i find, very balanced in the hand on the m8
so far, the lens is a strong all-round performer in low and bright light, color and b/w, attractive OOF wider open and very sharp when needed
the wide range of photos you all have posted in this thread seem to confirm my choicethanks
greetings from hamburg
rick
Michael, I was wondering what kind of film you're using? I'm digging those saturated tones although it makes me wonder if you're done with b/w for now? :)

Hello Renzsu........I have been using fuji pro 100 film a lot recently....I still use black and white (Tri-X) for my work/projects (more serious stuff)...if I am just out and about, I will use xp2 or this fuji 100.....
The stuff on my Flickr from India/Pakistan/Nepal is just a small percentage of my work in black in white...To be honest, I have just a very small percentage of my "work" available online...cheers, michael

Wish you better luck!
Hello,
I love this nokton.
I bought it after seeing some images here.
Here are some photos for my first post.
I think this is one hullava lens, eh?
It is; my CV 40/1.4 is undeservedly neglected ever since I got this one. A bit bulky to carry around, but nothing compared to most SLR lenses.

I like my Nokton a lot, but I have to admit, it has changed my "style" of shooting....I don't know if that is a good thing or a bad thing.....I am actually debating whether I should bring it with me on a photo trip to Myanmar in 2 weeks, due to the fact that I am not comfortable with carrying a 28mm/35mm/50mm combo.....it just doesn't work for me....I am used to a 28mm/50mm combo......I have a 50mm summilux (an old one, but a good one) and I used to depend on that for low light stuff until I bought the 35mm nokton, now my nokton has become my everyday lens and I really neglect my other lenses, it just doesn't seem right.....the more I look at my work from India, the more I want to leave the nokton at home........oh, well, I still have two more weeks to think about it.....
here are 2 recent ones from last weekend

Yes the 35/1.2 is "bulky" by RF standards but since I found a lab that gives me 6 meg scans, I feel more comfortable cropping for my "tele" shots. Disclaimer: I did pickup a CV 35/2.5 for a really light daytime lens.
michaelbialecki
09-25-2009, 06:05
Hello Akiva.....to, be honest, the "bulk" doesn't bother me that much....I use an old 90mm summicron ("big bertha") and it is roughly the same size as the nokton...the size doesn't really bother me....I have big hands...
I think it is the focal length that I have a problem with...it is my first and only 35mm focal length that I have ever used, and well....I feel like I hardly ever use my 28mm or 50mm when I have all 3 lenses in my bag...I just don't see the point....I either walk closer to the subject or walk back a couple of steps if I am using the nokton....I hardly ever switch lenses if I have the nokton on my camera.....maybe that is a good thing and I should change my "kit"...but I think I want my photos from Myanmar to be shot on tri-x with the same combo that I used when I was working in India (15/28/50/90)....don't get me wrong, I love my nokton and it has become my favorite lens and I have used it almost daily ever since I bought it.....that said....I am not so sure if that is a good thing, personally speaking of course....

Unfortunately, I scanned the prints myself...I know they s*ck.....the prints don't look as soft as the scans and I have learned to live with it for now.
Hey Akiva, I used a 15/35/90 combo last weekend for a little vacation that I took with my girlfriend and I brought this combo to see how I would like it....I never really missed the 28 or the 50 now that I think about it. I think for the next two weeks I will take this kit (15/35/90) out with me around Bangkok and see how I like it.

Hi Michael, are you able to post some shots with the lens stopped down? Would love to see how shows details in the shadows. I am considering getting this lens.
On another note, do you take a lot of time to look through your RF viewfinder to meter, than adjust exposure settings and than compose with external finder when shooting with the 15mm? I suppose you shoot with the all manual M3 right? Are you able to shoot fast with it? Can share your experience as well?

Michael, your India b&w pictures are really strong documentary work. The pictures you've posted using the 35/1.2 are much more light-hearted and offhand in nature, so I don't know if you should directly compare to gauge the shift in style. Still, it would be a shame if you looked at the results from your upcoming trip and found that they fell short compared to your earlier work.
IMO, the wide-angle perspective of the 28mm really contributes to the punch of your India pictures, and you might find that the size of the 35/1.2 makes it harder for you to get in close like that -- don't leave the 28mm behind.

Hey Vincent, I will try to find some photos that I took with the lens stopped down, I usually don't shoot it that way, but I think I have a couple photos lying around here somewhere....I will post them when I can...
As far as the 15mm goes, if I am using my m6 then I use the internal meter and I will usually open it up a half stop, it depends on the picture obviously, but I tend to open it up a half stop of whatever my meter is telling me when I use the 15mm. If I am using it on my m3/m2 then I use a hand held meter (sekonic 358) and I just go with it, I don't tend to meter a lot when I am shooting, just a couple quick checks and adjust as I shoot...
As far as composing is concerned, the more you use the lens and experiement with it when you first get it, you will learn how to use it and how NOT to use it...composing can be really easy with it , because after a while, you start to see 15mm shots and the viewfinder is just there for a quick check.....
I can shoot pretty fast with 15mm...the focusing is easy...I used a rollei 35 for a couple of years as my only camera and I learned how to adjust the focusing and aperture on that and now when I use the 15mm, it is so easy to do.
hope that helps...cheers, michael

BTW I tried the CV 35/1.4 (so I could carry a smaller lens)and it is fine lens but besides being a 1/2 stop slower, its results are not up to 35/1.2 par IMHO. As a 6 footer the barrel on the 35/1.2 is really a nice fit.

Hi Vincent.G,
I use my 15mm on my R4M and Bessa T. Both bodies have advantages... With the R4 you see inside the whole superwide internal finder almost all of the frame produced by the lens, so you don't need external finder. Then you can compose and meter quickly. With the T (no internal finder) I don't use external finder either, and you can shoot metering without taking the camera to your eye, because of the external metering info on the body: illuminated green arrows and red central dot. Funny and very useful, as people don't get you're shooting...
Depth of field is so enormous that you almos never focus, just keep the focus at 1 or 2 meters and maybe close one stop...
Wonderful lens.
Cheers,
Juan

Hi Michael
It's great to hear from you. How's your trip? I am looking forward to more pictures from you. I am considering nokton 35mm f/1.2 now and the more I see your pictures, the more I want to get it. The other nokton I have in mind is 50mm f/1.5 and both focal lengths are quite close so it's a tough call for me. Any advice?
15mm f/4.5 will be a must-have for me since I like to shoot wide angles.

Cheers,
Juan
Hi Juan
Thanks for the advice! Appreciate it.
I traded my Canon 135 f/2L for a Nokton (and a bunch of film) the other day and took the new toy for a walk.

Staales, I'm thinking about trading my 135L for a 35 nokton ... I just bought it last month, but frankly I've only shot about 10 pictures with it. I think those L lenses are just becoming too big for me :D
I love the pictures posted in this thread. I really like those wide open pictures.

beautiful lens that works so well with film or digital..the way it draws is just so beautiful, not as "perfect" a lens as the nokton 1.1 but in a good way.
Yeah the 35/1.2 has some character while the 50/1.1 is severely lacking in that department.

Does the nokton 35mm f/1.2 blocks a M2 viewfinder with 35mm framelines? The lens looks long though. Does it affect the way we compose?

For 15mm, depth of field is so extensive that you can just set to hyperfocal and fire away. So the coupling is not really necessary imo.

I have both the 35/1.2 Nokton and the 35 Summicron v4. I have never noticed the Summicron with its hood in the frame of my M6 .72 (same as M2).
Last night I was checking meter batteries in my M6's and put the Nokton on the M6 .72, it blocks a pretty significant part of the lower right hand corner of the frame, I'd guess maybe 15 - 20% of the total. But this wouldn't stop me from using it given how I compose and typically shoot a rangefinder.
Hi JSU
Thanks for the help.
I guess the blockage is expected given the size of the nokton. Every lens has its pros and cons.

distort more or less Vs summilux 35/1,4 asph?

Yes, you just need to use the depth of field scale on the lens to set focus. When shooting outdoors, using the" sunny f/16" exposure settings as a guideline, you can shoot pretty fast without metering alot. This lens is very sharp all around.
But the 15mm non-coupled version is LTM so you need a US$55 LTM to M adaptor on your M mount RF.
One more good news is that the cheaper LTM 15mm has a 15 or 21mm viewfinder included in the purchase but not the M mount 15mm (coupled version) which have to be bought seperately at extra cost.
As such, the 15mm LTM (non-coupled) + adaptor is a better deal imho.
Cheers!

Regarding the discussion about composing w/ the f1.2 - I don't think I ever took a vertical portrait with this lens, since I tilt the camera with the finder downwards - which means the lens blocks 1/4 of the top right corner, where commonly the head is located. It does suck.

Just bought this lens the other day to compliment my Summicron 2/35 ASPH. I really enjoy the size of this lens (I have really big hands), and it balances nicely with the grip attached. I have ran a few rolls through my M7 with the Nokton attached, and I am very impressed with the images. I did some comparitive shots with the 'cron and I find the Leica slightly sharper on the edges, but the Nokton has a better and creamier rendering for my tastes. I like to shoot wide open, and usually the outer zones have faded into nice boke, so the slight advantage of the 'cron is mostly wasted. I also have the Summilux 1.4/75mm, and this is a bigger lens than the Nokton, so I am used to the size, and coming from shooting D3's with bloated zoom lenses, the Nokton is small.
I will now likely sell the 'cron, and I may replace it with a Colour Skopar pancake, which is even smaller, but for now, the Nokton will suit all of my 35mm needs.

Tom,just a question for you:do you think that the VF 's obstruction is a problem on everyday's use?(mainly in vertical portrait??)Thanks
No I don't think so. To be honest, I was expecting the viewfinder obstruction to be greater, but it is about the same as my 75mm 'lux. I'm a left eye shooter as well, so I'd image that if I were able to shoot with my right, then it would be even less of an issue.

I find that vertical portraits are difficult with the Nokton's VF obstruction. I use it on an R-D1 (1:1 VF magnification) and I shoot with shutter release on top in vertical mode, and if I'm trying to put the face in the upper right quadrant it's impossible to watch for the right expression.

Just got my first test roll's scans from the lab, I must say I'm impressed by the results, I wasn't expecting anything special as I shot all frames at 1.2 using low shutter speed because of low light conditions, but the shots look crispy and sharp enough, and those light balls... aww, I love them! michael, in skimming the comments I noticed you mentioned you were going to try IQ labs for processing in BKK. When in thailand, I drop off my film for processing at Photo Gallery (formerly called Photo Hobby) in Silom Centre (level 3 from memory), next to the Sala Daeng BTS station. They in turn send it off to Pro Color Lab, and everything they've done for me has been consistently excellent - I've put 50+ rolls of E6 (always +2 stops) through with them and they've never missed a beat. So I'd definately give Pro Color Lab a shot - in my case I went with photo hobby/photo gallery as my go-between as it was more convenient for me than trekking out to Pro Color Lab.

I just realized that I have been so busy in the darkroom that I haven't posted any photos up in a while....

Keep the lux helen ;) It's more than suffice
Well, its way softer at 1.4 than the Nokton at 1.2. Gives the Nokton images a little more pop at very low dof.

thanks for all the posts, especially the pics with the 35/1.2 wide open, it really shows its signature........I recently picked up the CV 35/1.4, and am very happy with it, but these 2 lenses, despite similar f values, appear to be different animals........

As much as some people complain about how big and heavy this lens is, how much it blocks a VF - it seems to deliver superb results every time for people that actually use it. Not something that can be said about many other lenses.....
Great pics everyone. I'am wondering if any of you use this lens on bessa R2 (or R3 with the 40mm frame lines) cameras? How easy is it to focus? I'am kind of leaning towards getting such a combo but have been a little reluctant. I had a hard time focusing a Jupiter 8 at f/2 accurately on a bessa R body.
this lens never ceases to impress. sorry for the mass of images, but my second nephew just arrived today! And since I do not intend to have kids of my own, well, lets just say I am quite the ornery uncle for spoiling and teaching things to get on my sister's nerves!
(processed really quickly so my mom could see them, as such some highlights are blown more than I like)

thank you very much, guys. winter is a dark season here, the nokton is not leaving my Ms at the moment. and I even got to shoot a little these last few days. =) I'm going to post some more soon.
Yeah the 35/1.2 has some character while the 50/1.1 is severely lacking in that department.
I wonder could you expound on this statement? Thanks.

Generally, Im not a speed freak. I usually stay parked between 5.6 and 11 unless it's night or dusk. Anyway, I was loaned a 55mm FL 1.2 for my Canon and am having a blast with the thing at night wandering the city.
As much as my Nokton 1.4 has served me well as my lowlight lens, I do have to say I am very tempted to trade up for the 1.2.
I wonder could you expound on this statement? Thanks.
Both lenses are very good, however, the 35/1.2 has swirl and a 'look' while the 50/1.1 just has a very boring, highly clinical look like most other CV glass that is technically great but boring.

Beautiful shots! Did you scan the negs yourself or have it done at a lab?
I had one of these kick a** lenses before, I switched from film to digital and sold it. Wish I had never done it.... (sold the lens or switched to digital) I am back to RFs again and fully film as well. I now own the 50/1.1 Nokton which I am really loving and also have the 35/2.5 P II which is a super sharp and compact 35. But I miss the bokeh and available light capabilities of the 35/1.2 Nokton. I will probably try to pick up another one when my tax money comes in (if it ever does...) They can be had for around $700 is one waits for a good deal to come up here on RFF.
Beautiful shots! Did you scan the negs yourself or have it done at a lab?
As for me, I scan my negs myself. I don't trust labs anymore on that.
I use a Canon FS4000 which has been doing pretty well so far.

yes yes the cop with his mickey mouse glove was quite the geezer, he was nice though!
these were taken on tri-x 400 at 400asa, except for the night shots (f1.2, ~1/8s, tmax 3200 in diafine) and dev'd for 6.5min in ilford ilfotec lc29 1+19. the two of the cop w/ glove (tri-x at ~1000asa) were dev'd in diafine.

Does anyone have an image of this lens mounted on an M4-P or black chrome Leica? Just want to check the size and look.
The chrome version really looks nice on a chrome M, but is sold out. It does look to be a HUGE lens though.
