View Full Version : Sofia
Through a whirlwind of events, my employer is sending me to our offices in Sofia, Bulgaria, for 3-6 months. My departure is as early as 4/11, though that may be pushed back. Naturally I am doing my homework, but any info, tips, contacts, etc., are appreciated. Especially any spots where RF GAS might be accomodated. Lately I have been thinking about a Kiev with Helios; I have mused that bargains might be had.
Otherwise, I am travelling light as far as gear goes, likely the Oly C5050 for digi/colour and a 35SP or XA for b&w.

How do you solve a problem like Sofia !!!!...
hmmm.. something about that just doesn't sound right.. ;)
Dave
I went to Sofia two years ago on a business trip, I enjoyed the place a lot. It is beautiful, relaxed, full of history and many more things.
I hope you will enjoy the place like I did.
Dave: LOL ... career-wise, this is a great opportunity for me. So ... no problem!
Earl,
Get yourself a book from Lonely Planet. Also, view the thorntree forums in LonelyPlanet.com.
You need a carry on of Tri-X, so you can grab photos on your way there, via LHR or AMS, or FRA or CDG.

UIO.
Mark, I will have TX and TMY-2 with me (rolled from bulk) plus PanF in checked, shielded of course. Looks like I will be going through CDG.
Thanks for the additional tips. One more reason to buy you some beers!

With regards to the Lonely Planet guides - and I've been using them for years - a word of caution: since television started airing the little specials produced by LP, a recommendation by LP virtually guarantees that the event/place/view will be overrun... On my last two trips abroad (in the last 12 months) I've ditched the book after the first few days. A traveling companion has pointed out that the only genuine experiences we had on those trips happened when we did exactly what LP advised us not to. Hyperbole maybe, but....
Enjoy your trip! There is so much information about Sofia and you have a good chunk of time.
I've spent quite a bit of time in Sofia; it's a wonderful place. I will probably be there in April or May - perhaps a chance to introduce you to a few friendly locals. Some amazing places to eat.
Many of my Living The Dream pictures were made there, but don't let them scare you; I didn't shoot them for a travel magazine...

well, if the t.o. trips works out as planned i guess we'll miss each other.
bummer.
Danang -- thanks for the tip. I normally seek out the "everyday" locales and peeps.
Tom, I will send you my contact info once everything is in place.
joe -- yeah, it's a bummer. it seems like some sort of fate is keeping us apart. has someone told you of my hidden dark side?
Earl,
If your timetable permits adjust your outbound flight from CDG to SOF and delay it, and spend time inside/outside the Paris Airport.

Mark: The tentative itinerary has a pretty long layover @ CDG, so that should work. Thanks.
