View Full Version : MARCH/APRIL ... FOURTEEN DAY ONE CAMERA ONE LENS CHALLENGE ... the start!
14 Day One Camera One Lens Challenge.
Proposed Rules and Schedule.
Commencing 25th March 09
Ending 7th April 09
Camera Choice/one only … open but this is the only camera body you can use for leisure (non pro) photography for the stated period.
Lens Choice/one only … open but no zooms and also the only lens you can use for leisure (non pro) photography for the stated period.
Film/Memory Card Usage … as much as you want as often as you want.
Flash Usage … yes.
Cropping … mild cropping is ok but not landscape to portrait or vice versa.
Subject Material … portraits/landscapes/street whatever you want within reason.
Images To Be Submitted … three maximum, less if you think you’re that good you can win this thing with one.
The gallery … for hosting your input will open at the end of the fourteen day shooting period and be closed on the 21st April 09 … this allows you two weeks to get yourself organised after the 14 day period ends and get your files/submissions uploaded. If you don’t think you can manage this don’t participate! The sooner your three images are in the gallery the more views and comments they are likely to receive!
The judging system … as before will be based on a points system. One point for a view and six for a comment … the poster’s comments/replies will not count towards their score. The results of the competition will be posted in a thread a few days after the gallery has closed.
The winner/winners will receive the plaudits and constant admiration of fellow forum members for some time to come … but in reality, little else! We are just here for the fun of it after all.

Wooohoooo ,Keith....
How Fun is this
I think Your next Proposal should be 'The Black Whole' Concept
you demonstrated with the M8 photo
Best to You- H
Are we allowed a light meter...? ;-)
This time I will use my Canonet :)
Are we allowed a light meter...? ;-)
I hope so, I'm going to blow the dust off my ancient Rolleicord and use that fellow.
BTW if light meters are not permitted do you think we can trust all those who will be using cameras with built-in meters NOT to use theirs? ;)
Cheers.

Is medium format gear allowed? I'd finally try to use Bronica ETRSI purchased a few months back. The only experience so far with the beast was misloading of 135W panorama back resulted in 24 blank "exposures" on film base :)
I have this strange urge to use a Smena 8M, but it doesn't have a rangefinder. In fact, it barely has a viewfinder.
There was no mention of a limitation to rangefinder cameras, so I'm guessing it would be ok ?
Edit: If the Smena is not working in test, then I might try a Flexaret (120 tlr). Also ok ?
Igor/Martin, have a look at what Richard is planning to use.

I think just about anything goes!
 ?!?!??!?!
The elastic bands just set it off. Very stylish.
Is anyone using a pinhole camera ? Or a 20"x24" Polaroid ??

I'll also use a Konica auto S2.

Where do the photos get posted?
Richard, that is bloody superb mate. I can't wait to see the results.
That looks sort of impressive :)
But why a rangefinder if there is no focus mount ?
And that reminds me that I should somehow resurrect my Blik if I'm going to use the Smena.

Canon 5D and 85 1.8 or 50 1.4 depending on my mood on 25th.

M6/50 1.4 4th version

Count me in.
I'll be using my M3 and 50 summicron, and for film either 100TMax or Efke 25,50.
I'm in. Minolta CLE, 2/40 M-Rokkor, BW400CN.

i'm gonna rock my m8/50 pre-asph lux.
I'm in... Fuji GW690 III. I just got the camera, and this should be fun. :)
OK, I've decided. M4 with Canon 50/1.2.
OK, I've decided. M4 with Canon 50/1.2.
Great combination Chris ... with a day or so to go I still can't decide. I'm seriously thinking MF ... I may go and pick up my Rollieflex T which has just had the lens cleaned and use that. I've been using a little Voigtlander Brilliant 6x6 lately and I'm starting to quite like the square format ... I thought of using it but it's scale focus and a little slow to shoot with.
And I have all this 120 film that Fergus sent me! :D

Very tough choosing. Thought about the MF route with the C330f, then the Fed 1 with a Summitar, then the R2A with the Canon 50 1.8. But I haven't shot the Nikon stuff in awhile, so finally settled on an 8008s with a 50 1.8 AI lens. Neither are used enough so here's the chance! Although there is the FE2.........nah, the 8008s is it.
Sound like fun... I would go one for every things, camera, len, film, and developer. :)
It would be M6TTL + 35/2 Summicron IV + Tri-x and D76 for me...
Bessa R3M-Ultron 28/2. I must get familiar with this minifinder. :)
Peter_Jones
03-23-2009, 01:25
Well, I was going to use the Konica S2, but the slow speeds are very slow - 1/30 is more like 1/4 !
So, maybe the Yashica GTN, Bessa with either a J9 or one of many 50s, a newly resurrected Kiev or just use fast film in the Konica :) ?
Unfortunately, I won't be able to participate as I will be on an extended shoot for 'work,' but I do have a rules question, as I want to participate the next time around:
The rules state that you can't crop portrait to landscape, but can you crop a 6x6 to a rectangle, or a 35mm to a square?
petronius

I will use my evil Revueflex 3000SL with a Porst 1,4/55mm.
Pickett Wilson
03-23-2009, 02:38
I'd think that since cropping portrait or landscape rectangles out of the 6x6 format when printing has been pretty common among 6x6 shooters for years there wouldn't be a problem, but Keith is the final arbitrator of all rules for the challenge.

That's a tricky one ... I hadn't thought about that.
I guess a square image is neutral so a change to landscape or portrait is not really a reversal. Can't see a problem with that ... so as long as no one else objects take it as a gimee! As for going from 35mm to square the same applies ... it's not a total reversal so why not!

Killer. My eye tends to grab a lot of images that work better as squares for some reason. I wish I could participate this time around, and I look forward to doing one in late summer or fall. Good luck to everyone who is participating, I know that there will be some fantastic results as always!

I'm going to use some of the PAN-F that Fergus gifted (:D) me, and I've ordered a step ring so I can use my ND filters. I want to see what I can do with f/1.2 in broad daylight. And my new L-308 meter arrived today, so I need to spend some quality time with it too. (Thanks for the tip on the good price.)

OK, I've decided. M4 with Canon 50/1.2.
Cool, we can have a personal shoot out at the same time if you like!
I'd like to use my M5 with the M-Hexanon 50/1.2.
't Will be interesting to see whether the M-Hexanon will be up against the sweet spot in your Canon lens. I used to have a Canon and stil regret selling it.
"I have only one body and only one lens, so let it be ... M6/50 1.4 4th version"Hey! Foul! Foul! ilia won't have any voices in the back of his head saying, "Moron! You brought the wrong lens! And what were you thinking choosing this body? Are you daft?! :( " He'll be entirely concentrated on capturing the image rather than putzing/second-guessing/sweating over gear. It's a definate unfair advantage.

Yes I do. I really hate when people say it can only be shot on a tripod because it's so big. With a strap it's really not that bad. Yeah it's heavy, but you know that, and you don't complain because that is the sacrifice you make when you decide to do it. Some people shot with it only on a tripod, but some of them need to stop telling others that it can't be used in other ways.
I carried it around Chicago for a day with the metered chimney finder (probably 10 lbs now) and without a strap. My arms got a workout, but it was worth it. I got some awesome photos on huge negatives. I bring a tripod when I can, but if I can't no big deal. I use it when I want to, and I try to overcome it's limitations. I have been bringing it to sporting events (basketball and gymnastics), shooting with longer than normal shutter speeds for sports, because I wanted to. I am going to process the negatives today, hopefully I have captured some nice motion.
Sorry about the long post. It really bothers me when people say it can't or shouldn't be done.
P.S. I am not a huge guy. I'm actually really skinny.

I had a friend that shot weddings for years with an RB67 handheld. The images were amazing, but I sure don't know how he did it.

I've never looked into the M-Hex, so that will be interesting. What I should do one day is shoot the Canon 50/1.2 alongside my Pentax 50/1.2 (SLR) lens. Cheers!
Hmmm. I washoping that this would start a bit later so I'd get my Oly 35RD back from repairs from John, but it looks like it's not gonna make it in time for this one. So, I have to make some descisions as to what to use. Maybe I'll try MF this time - Kiev 88 or Kowa Six. Maybe even a Welta Folder. But Hexar RF with 15mm Heliar seems very tempting as well.....

Finally figured out how to count the frames correctly on my Rolleicord I so despite it being older and crankier than me it deserves its chance to gobble up some HP5.

Got some good stuff on the roof of a nearby campus building today. No-longer-used astrophysics radar dishes and things. (Though it may not count, since it's a day early...)

I plan to use the same type of body, but am going more economical on the lens. I'll use an I61-LD. Film choice is still up in the air. I just picked up some Provia 100 from the developer lab. Gosh, I'm blown away. I have one more roll and may use that. However, I just shot my first roll of Ektar! a little while ago, and may use that. Yet, I find b/w so wonderful.
Maybe I'll know when I wake up tomorrow.

Normally a lurker, but I'll go ahead and jump in on the fun. My dented M2 with misaligned rangefinder, My collapsible summicron 50 with custom flare management, a.k.a. cleaning marks. And HP5+, which there is nothing wrong with.

I'm actually already thinking ahead here people ... at some stage in the future I'd fancy a 'sunny sixteen no meter competition!'
Even the guys/gals with DSLR's could join in ... they do have manual settings don't they? ... somewhere in between 'medium' and 'well done!'
Maybe shorten it to a week and have three entries per participant again with pics encompassing a range of lighting conditions!
Am I crazy to consider such a thing? :p
Sunny.16.Shoot-out --- sounds like a winner!
Sunny 16 in the depths of winter.. that would be more of a challenge ;)

Not here it wouldn't ... it would just mean you weren't beating of flies and keeping an eye out for snakes as you adjust your camera settings outdoors! :D

Actually I believe most DSLR's have built in meters that work even in manual. For what your proposing you would have to exclude any camera with a built in meter unless it can be rendered useless by removing the battery. So older film slrs could possibly be used but aperture priority cameras would be out as would most of the fixed lens cameras.
Mike D.
If a number of people could reach some semblance of a consensus on a dirt cheap, easily available camera or camera/lens combo, it would be fun to do a challenge where everyone used the same camera, same lens, and same film.
OK, I think I have it narrowed down. M8 (M5 still an outside chance) with a Jupiter 9 (85mm/f2) or an Angenieux 135/3.5. I want to shoot something a little different, one of these combos should fit the bill.
I have never shot this Jupiter 9 so I think it might be kinda fun.
Off we go, this should be interesting!

But not using a meter is about setting the exposure beofre looking at the meter, not setting and changing your mind. OTOH, the best exposure meter on a dslr is the histogram after you shoot, and that gets kind of hard to ignore unless you turn the lcd off.

But how would you know that it wasn't used? If your accustomed to using the meter all of the time sometimes it just becomes second nature.
Mike D.
Thinking of which camera I could use to take part, I came to some thoughts:
the more photos I take (depending on possibilities, weather, time etc.), the better my chances to get 3 good shots.
This means by comparison: Olympus RC, 20 rolls of Tri-X (Euro 70+), or shooting 720 shots on one CF card, Pentax K100, 28mm (which makes it the same focal length as the RC).
Conclusion:
Disadvantage for those who only own film camera(s).
Thomas (wallace)
I'll be shooting 120 roll film, 6x7. During the fourteen days I might get through two, even three rolls.
If I don't get three keepers, worthy of this project, I'll take up golf.

I'm shooting 6x7 and I'm hoping to shot 2 rolls of 120, and I'm going to try to finish a roll of 220 that I'm on the eighth frame. I'm worried I might have to process it without finishing the roll. I can tell you that for me, because I am more deliberate with medium format I get many more keepers than with digital. I can think of two shots I have taken already that I think are keepers out of the 7 I've taken on that roll of 220.
What!!! No Bentley for the winner? ;)

Not much, they're both dead, but if you want to machine gun "720 shots on one CF card", feel free to do so.
I talked about possible opportunities within 2 weeks, that means some 50 shots per day.

First roll through and I've got one I think is worthy. Reloading....
Dont ask me why but I had to go SLR. Final combo (first shots today) is:
Contax N1 w/50mm 1.4 Planar.
Fun fun!

As far as I understood the special gallery will be opened only at the end of the period.
Does it mean that I should keep photos untill the posting date or I'm free to show them in album here before posting to that special gallery?
If you want to WIN then I suggest that you hang on to them, as I understand it the points accrue by, among other things, the number of views in the "special" gallery. If you post earlier elsewhere you may use up some of those views.
If taking part is what it's about for you, then I don't see anything in the rules about posting elsewhere.
What d'you say Keef?

Will the gallery that the images should be submitted to be named here?
I'm using my M4 and 35mm Summicron
I'll ask Stephen to open another gallery after the closing date of the competition and I'll probably give that gallery three weeks before scoring the images ... a week more than last time. I remember last time therewere still comments and views going in a week after I posted the results.
As pointed out if you post an image prior to the competition gallery actually being open you will lose some impact and it will likely scorre less accordingly ... if you have an image that you're sure is a killer I'd personally be holding it back for this reason! :)
Talking of killers.
I just saw your latest uploads in the gallery. I couldn't leave any comments, I was so completely blown away!
Thanks Richard ... of course you realise I only do these things to impress you. :p
Interestingly you were the original motivation behind the somewhat intense self portrait work that I now come up with occasionally ... that and the strange voices in my head that tell me to do it ... and how to do it! :D
You'll be calling yourself an "artist" next.:p
LOL .... I was just about to post:
"So are we artists or what?" :p
OK.... I have to say that using just one lens and camera for this long is a SERIOUS challenge for me. It feels so constricting, quite a change.
I must say it was quite strange shooting some "street" with an SLR again. I am so used to rangefinders for that purpose that every time my motor drive wound it sounded like a loud megaphone to me...I'm used to being a little stealthy.
Anyway, I hope others are having as much fun with this as I am and, at the same time, I am curious to see if others are feeling "constricted" or if they are really enjoying the experience.

I havent been able to get out at all thanks to the flu. *grumble grumble*
I hope we have more of these challenges. I'm determined to participate in one!
I've enjoyed what I've done so far. I'm a tad worried that I may not make the finish line for submissions though. I cant find a local lab that will turn round 120 fillum in less than 2 weeks at less than extortionate prices.
I don't mind though, so far it's been a good learning experience: 1 Camera + 1 Lens + Sunny 16.
Cheers

I made my 3 roll goal and I'm just scanning that roll now.
Good inspiration.

well, I finished one roll with Bronica. A few portraits, that's it. Today I depart for holidays to Germany (with short stay in London in between), Bronica is too much gear to lag around, so I take olympus OM4ti/50mm f2 macro. When I get back I will have a few days till deadline, should I submit Bronica or OM images? Dilemma.

Had two rolls through the M5 with M-Hex 50/1.2, one Kodak 400 color film and a Kodak Tmax 400. Third roll loaded and ready. Might be able to put up shots from Thursday on, scanning tomorrow (tuesday 7th)
Looking forward to comparing my shots to the Canon 50/1.2 shots!

Still on the first roll - the Mrs is moving out and the house looks like a bombsite, when I take the camera anywhere my mind is not with it, too much to think about. Still, managed a couple of shots to post if they turn out OK. :)

Ok, I have a confession to make....
On my last day of shooting, I took a second camera with me. I had a roll of Ektar in 35mm that was burning a hole through my pocket and I could not stand to waste the chance to shoot with it. My shooting time is short and precious....so I shot black and white with my Balda Baldax and Ektar with my R3A and 40mm Nokton.
Which of course means that I didn't stick to one camera or one lens.
I am shamed and should be cast out. :(
Good news is, I got some good color shots. :)
Maybe we should have a separate catagory for the most heart rending confession ... points for originality to be added to the points for the pics?
"The devil made me do it!" :p
Getting all my film developed tomorrow. I am not too confident at the moment with these captures, hopefully something will surprise me a bit. I was so fixated on what I wasn't using it made me laugh :)
We shall see!

I think we all got a bit of cabin fever.
Keith- I noticed you got the "F6 fever" during the shooting period. I should have sent you mine as a loaner, maybe I could have enticed you to sneak a roll of Ektar through it :)

It was the Ektar I tell ya! It wasn't my fault! If I coulda gotten Ektar in 120, I would've stuck to the one camera/lens. But Calumet wanted $12.50 to ship 5 rolls of it. What's a guy supposed to do?

Anyone who sends me an F6 at the moment will never see it again ... I've got bad gas for one of them! :p

I have not notice a 14 day challenge gallery for this challenge. I found one were there are older pictures from December and January.

I'll PM Stephen tomorrow and ask him to create a new gallery in the next day or so. I noticed there were a few people who said they had to send film off for processing etc so I though I'd give everyone plenty of leeway this time around! :)

I was ready to take my computer apart thinking that yesterdays software up grade has created an over active filter as some images are not loading!

See. I'm not the only one who was weak. ;)
I'm out as well.
I have misunderstood the point about the sole cam for a period as a sole cam for a competition.

I think that if you play around with other cameras/lenses during the two weeks you're not too far off from the spirit of this project, as long as you only post shots from one camera/lens, especially if you always used that one combo with this project in mind. I guess I'd root for more people being involved than not, so I'm using a loose interpretation...

I wish it had been that loose, it was an absolute bear to use only one camera and lens (especially, in my case, a film camera). It was tough as I never have problems with using just a RF but using a film SLR was very rough (for me).
Oh well, that is why they called it a "Challenge" ;-)
Fun experience.

Is this gallery up and I just missed it or has yet to materialize in all it's 1's & 0's glory?

Glad the gallery got up. I was a bit disappointed in myself this time around. I shot two rolls of film last time, and only one this time.
I repeatedly get the "exceeded daily limit" notice upon attempting to upload 3 pics under 200k each to this events' gallery, haven't uploaded in some time. Any ideas?
Thanks,
Gene
I really should scan and upload some of these..
Dave
For anyone who's dragging the chain a bit don't fret ... I'l give the gallery at least two to three weeks before doing the count up!
There's already some great images in there! :)

A Suggestion....
It's great to see so many people participating in the competition, both through posting terrific images and viewing/commenting as well. Quite a success I think.
May I suggest that in the future submissions be anonymous, with only the organizer knowing what was taken by a particular individual. I have done this before and it can really help to keep any personal bias (or relative personal popularity) out of the evaluations, with only the photos being judged.
Anyway, great stuff everyone!!!
Kent
I'm going to second Kent's suggestion.
Just a bump, time is running out if you're planning to upload your pictures...
How much longer have we got Keith?
Goodo, I'm still waiting on Cecil Jacob's finest.
It's no good, I'm going to have to buy some tanks n stuff & start to do my own.
I was able to shoot exactly five frames ... no, not five rolls ... 5 FRAMES. Nevertheless, I was determined to upload something, even if it had to be the frame numbers. (hmmm. Come to think of it, that would have been more interesting :bang: )
AnywayS - upload 'em guys n' dolls! There's some pretty good stuff in there already ... watchin' to see more! (and if anyone has a more boring shot than mine, I wanna see it!) :(
I used colour neg (because I 'never' use that) in a Smena 8M (because I 'never' use that) and have now discovered that every shot is striped :(
All I can say is there was no light-leak when I last used it, but that was nearly a year ago I think, so - lesson learned. My apologies.
EDIT: I have just realised that previously I used it in it's case, but this time I removed it. Dohhh
