View Full Version : Help me decide

Okay, in reference to several threads, I have pulled my Kiev rebuild out of mothballs. I still need a few parts, but she is mostly painted. I need to figure out how to disassemble the baseplate. Unfortunately, it appears that my baseplate is older than the example on the KSS as the bottom locks don't unscrew. It appears that their mounting points are melted somehow together. I have deleted the engraved Kiev logos and plan to replace them with either a decal or some dry-rub lettering. If it is a decal, I need help deciding on the font to use. I played with a few and I can't decide. Take a look and let me know what the general consensus on the board is. I am having a hard time deciding between numbers 2,5 and 9. Number 8 looks kind of cool too. So what sayeth the board? Oh yeah, I forgot, most likely they will be printed in this red, maybe a little darker.

#3 seems fitting.

2 looks prettiest to me. On second thoughts; 3 is more brutal - maybe that feeling fits the old Arsenal more.

Number 3 is called Kremlin Advisor. Rather fitting...

I like several of them ok but think they would all look better were the "K" the same size as the other letters.
That said, I like #6.

1, 2, 3, 4, 7, 8 and 9 contain errors. Most notably, "Б" and "В" are different letters, as are "И" and "П", and "З" and "Е".

It's like printing Lelca, Leioa or Teica on your Leica if you're Japanese.

(Edit: And 6 has a very weird E, too.)

My personal preference would be something like this:

67961

You can basically use any uppercase stencil font, write "KNEB", flip the N horizontally into an И and it will be fine.

I would suggest the original 1947 script - I have a reduced drawing I can send .

I cannot comment this. Made my day! ))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))

This is kinda C&C: Red Alert writings)))))))

Anyway, I would recommend this engraving, like very old Kievs:

Yeah, I tried to comment earlier and it erased my post. Anyway, most of the misspellings are related to the fact that I used fonts rather than reset my keyboard for Cryllic. I looked for something close to what you show in your pic Dee, I couldn't find anything I was happy with. Quasit, I already have one kiev with that engraving. A very nice 1949-50 model, with a ZK lens. I want something different, but with a definite commie flair. I think I may keep searching. Either that, or I need to play some more in photoshop. Maybe if I take a pic of the faceplate and then put the writing on myself I can get a better idea of what I want. thanks so far everybody. I am still up in the air.

Numbers 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 9 are with wrong cyryllic spelling.

As the initial project of Contax Copying was called `Volga` or `Волга` (russian river), then just put this engraving.

Like on this picture (above Contax) :

As I said, the spelling is a result of the font, because all of them were spelled the exact same way. The differences in the fonts accounted for the incorrect spelling. I used the english spelling here that we have all accepted K-N-E-B. I don't know why some of the fonts pictured it properly and others did not. All I know is that I spelled it improperly/correctly;)

Okay, a couple of new pics. Working with photoshop and setting the language of the computer I came up with these, which should contain the proper spelling...

I should have one or two more shortly.

Okay, two more real quick. this one is still KNEB

This one is taking QUAsit's advice. If was code named the Volga, then here it is.

Personally, I like the original Kiev engraving more than any of your mockups. However, I really like the Volga suggestion. That's what I would do.

When first KIEVs were produced there were no KGB (КГБ) - there was MGB (МГБ) - Ministry of Governmental Security...

In addition, taking a Kiev and painting KGB or whatever on it would be like taking an Argus and painting CIA on it. At best, it's tacky. ;)

My choice :)
Btw. is it expensive ? If you don't minfd, what is the price ?
I always wanted to make my Kiev look like a Contax II.

By the way, most of those spell "Kieb" not "Kiev", hope you're aware of that. That letter is Cyrillic "B".
