View Full Version : Diafine in Europe
Since I know that Diafine is very hard to find in most European countries, I was quite surprised to find this:
http://www.foto-riegler.at/pdf/Foto%20Riegler%20Newsletter%202005-06.pdf
Foto Riegler is a shop specializing in large format gear and fine art photo supplies, quite reliable to deal with, though prices are a bit on the high side (but then, which prices aren't, here in Austria...). Might be an option if you are located inside the EU and want to try out Diafine, without possible shipping and customs problems...

That isn't really a bad price if it's the set to make a gallon of each solution. I got quoted 19 USD for the same thing, so it really isn't that much more.
Nope, it is the set for 2x 950 ml (roughly, 2x a quart, if I'm not mistaken).

Eeek...than yes, that's really high.

Stephanie,
Adorama has Diafine, gallon kits (1 gallon each of A & B), for $14.95
19 bucks is kinda high. Where are you buying it? If it is local, then you are saving the shipping costs so it might not be too bad after all. I usually restock when ordering other stuff from Adorama, so the shipping costs are diluted somewhat.
At any rate, I'm glad there is a European source for this great old developer. How does that price, which I assume is subject to VAT within the EU, compare with ordering it from Huron Camera? I don't think anyone has posted that their Diafine ordered from Huron by mail has been subject to any duties yet when entering the EU. Is this true?
Tom
I'm also glad that there's finally an European source for Diafine :) Thanx for the heads-up Roman ! That price is a bit on the expensive side though.
If I recall correctly, the price at Huron Camera is $16, which is roughly 12-13 €, but you get a gallon of developer !
I ordered two sets of one gallon each from Huron, and they charged $12 for shipment which is probably the same or even less than it would cost to have it sent inside Europe. Sent by USPS normal parcel and declared as camera parts, I didn't have to pay any custom charges, UPS or Fedex charge fees for EVERYTHING.
That said, it's always cheaper in long term to 'bulk order' and get the 4 gallon set vs the 1 gallon one, no matter where you are (I think the 1 gal. set was around $10 in US ¿?). OTH I'm still using my first litre of diafine after almost a year now, so in fact I could have ordered a 1/4 gallon set and would be in the same position, except that I'm approaching the point where I'll have to refill A due to normal loss as it's absorved by the emulsion.
So, it may be a good option if you want to try Diafine without having to get a gallon and have it sent from overseas. If you end loving it and decide you'll stay with it forever, you can always order some gallon boxes from Huron later.

I posted a recipe for home-made Diafine in the Diafine Diaries
If you can't find it... brew it ;)
You can also buy it online from prophot.fr
30 euros for the gallon size. (go to produits > Révélateurs films.)

Original site that user mentioned in the first post still sells it - http://www.foto-riegler.at/fotofachversand-startseite.html
I paid €35 for the gallon package locally here in Dublin earlier on in the year. Seems expensive, until you consider the fact you can re-use it for several years. I spend a lot more than that on D76 (my other developer) each year.

well thats expensive.
Now i have to figure out if i want to buy anything else from freestylephoto that i can't find in that shop and see what costs less.
btw. when you say reuse. do you make the gallon and use the whole galon or do you use some of it for a year and then use the unused part? :S

You don't discard diafine after use. You pour in A, when done pour back into the bottle, then pour in B, pouring back into it's own bottle when done, use a water stop, then fix and dry as usual.
Reuse as much as you like. Some people use the same batch for years.
ag-photographic carry it in the uk at around £35 for 1 us-gal just to throw out another source, even if a little pricey compared to the usa !
www.fotohuisrovo.nl sells it in the Netherlands. The owner, RobertV, is a great guy and a regular here as well.

+1 for FotohuisRoVo.
Here's their Diafine page (http://shop.fotohuisrovo.nl/product_info.php?cPath=31_37&products_id=161). Also pretty expensive, but it lasts very long...
Another possibility is Macodirect.de (http://www.macodirect.de/bka-negativentwickler-c-1_5_580_581.html).

Tetenal Emofin should be the same as Diafine.
looks like site posted is selling Diafine 2 x 3.8litre for Euro 29 so there may be a mistake in pricing on the website for smaller size which is Euro 24 for 2 x 950ml. Maybe it should have been 14 ???

Tetenal Emofin should be the same as Diafine.
Please define "same". They're different developers AFAIK, but ment to do the same thing...

1. two parts
2. temp and time insensitive
3. long life
4. reuse the same batch for ages
5. idiotproof (that's me...:o)
