View Full Version : now, i want a second body.

been thinking about it some, getting a second g1 body...one for the af kit lens and later on the af 20/1.7 lens (also the 45-200) and one for using the zm lenses with manual focus.

having the 20 (40 on the g1) and a 70/2.8 or 100/1.5 sonnar just might make a killer combo for my kind of shooting.

i wish the g1 bodies were available on their own.

I just can't get my mind to accept red as a camera colour.

Speaking of hardware, I just found out that the in Computer class I'm taking we will be building a PC. Just what I need another XP box. I really need to cull both my PC and Camera collections down to things I actually use, instead of things I used to use.

Ubuntu is great. I'm running 8.10 server and 8.04 desktop. Top notch stuff. Should take much better advantage of your old hardware than XP would. Vista....shiver...

Since this question is already asked........

Are you going to wait until after PMA the first week of March? If any new M43 cameras are introduced maybe....
1) You will find a different body more appealing.
2) With the introduction of different options the price of the G1 may come down a little more.

i really have no reason to rush. my shooting is limited at this frozen time of year so i may wait.

but i am not one of those that are expecting olympus to come out with a near rangefinder. if they have i.s. in the body then it would be better for me and the 50 sonnar as i shake a bit more these days.

Red, joe, you know you want it ;)

I think the red version is just cool-looking. And I am for one can't understand why the delay for Olympus, the (guinea-pig) G1 has proven to be quite popular.

Don't tell me that they are not ready, if they can crank up new models for their P&S, they have resources to spare to produce the m4/3rd cameras.

I agree. Wait. Getting the G1 was cool--early adopter-ish. Now you can have some fun, but i think you should wait to see what other offerings show up on the m4/3 front from both Olympus and Pani (?) before committing to a 2nd G1 body. $.02

I'm curious as to what other G1 owners think regarding the upcoming Oly micro 4/3. What additional features would it take for existing G1 owners to switch to the Oly, or to buy an Oly as a 2nd body?

If the IQ was equal or better than the G1 and the camera was smaller that would be a big plus. I was really intrigued by the Oly concept camera. I like the Pen-like size and look. I like the EVF on the G1. I'm not sure something like that would be available on the Oly, but an LCD the quality of the G1 or the LX3(!!) that could swing and tilt would be a nice substitute.

All metal body with Leica CLE form factor and EVF as good as or better than the G1. Oh no...wait...that's the Leica m4/3rds body I was describing. :D

Well if it looks anything like the mock up then I'm not at all interested. Looks like a cheap P&S. If they provide a weather sealed pro body with EVF and swing out LCD, like the G1, then I'd be interested.

Thanks! I don't follow 4/3 news as I have a Pentax mount digital, but the idea of a camera I could use with both FD and M lenses would be really cool. I may still end up with the G1, but as I won't be buying until later this year anyway, I might as well wait and see what Olympus comes up with.

Just imagine using the 40mm Summicron-C as a portrait lens.

Sorry, but I don't like this concept at all. Looks like just another P&S built from an Altoids tin with a lens stuck on the front. Not very innovative at all. I would like to see Oly offer a robust weatherproof body with the features of the G1, including EVF and swing/tilt LCD. The latter is a godsend for tripod work. Internal OIS would also be nice, but not if it results in a bloated body like the E3. Right now I'm pretty happy with the G1 as is and Oly, Leica, or anyone else planning a new MFT body will have to work hard to better the G1 as far as I'm concerned.

what are you talking about, real deal?

the g1 is 'right' enough my friend.

good images, comfortable body, near silent shutter, noiseless af.

leica has made one fumble after another.
leica is still living on past glories, most folks here are using well used old bodies and lenses and a small minority buy new.
and the new stuff needs ir filters to work properly and the lenses fall apart as much as any other maker but they cost 8 times as much.

if that is the 'real deal', you can keep it.

It's just a throw-away digital, like every other digital. It will be worthless in 2 or 3 years. That said, it's absolutely perfect for me.

Why worry about looks. :) If you want pretty, buy an old rangefinder like a Canon P or a Leica or something.

Joe,
This G1 really interests me after reading all your post as an alternative when i dont want to carry around my heavy dslr body.I looked at one yesterday and was curious as to how you find the manual focusing with the LCD finder. The camera seem solid but the finder Im not sold on.Im not planing on using my m mount lens just the kit lens.
Thanks

back alley
02-06-2009, 17:28
are you thinking of manually focusing the kit lens?
i use af for the 2 panasonic lenses i have.

using the zm lenses i find the manual focusing fine, especially the longer lenses. in lower light the noise increases but it's still pretty easy to focus.

if you do get a g1 i recommend getting an adapter and trying your m lenses, it's great fun.

I find manually focusing the kit lens to be absolutely a dream. The 10x zoom window automatically pops up in the VF when you turn the manual focus ring on the kit lens.

I prefer to use the EVF (like a "real" camera) and have the playback preview set to 1 second, which is brief enough so as not to be distracting but long enough to tell if you got the shot or not.

For me, I find the live-view EVF is the thing that changes the equation regarding the whole RF vs SLR focusing debate. It's an entirely new way to use a camera, especially when you have shutter speed preview turned on.
