It finally arrived today, just after 7AM!

What am I talking about?

My Yashica J, that's what. Kind of a long story actually. I won this thing on 'the bay' and paid for it 2 weeks and 2 days ago. I waited and waited and still no camera. I emailed the seller and he asked if I had paid. I checked my bank statement to make sure and I had paid, which of course I had. He confirmed this fact and said he would look into it. Turned out he had not sent it. ONly took 3 days to travel across this vast country of ours (Australia) and into my hot little hands.

This camera is a nice little piece of gear. 2.8 4.5cm Yashinon lens, Copal shutter with speeds 1/25, 1/50 1/100 and 1/300 plus B. Rangefinder patch is quite bright, but not as bright as my Zorki-4 or my Mamiya 35S2. Lens is nice and glear and the shutter fires nicely at all speeds and my Hanimex TX265 flash fires when it is connected to the PC socket.

The satin chrome is nice with few marks and no brassing. The skin is in almost new condition. The black painted trim is wearing off in a couple of places where the (n)ever ready case has rubbed on it.

I can't wait to run a rool through this beauty. All I will need with me is one of my meters and a roll of film and I will be set to go.

Anyone else have this model?

My other Yashica's are a GSN (like nearly everyone else here), a TL-Electro (which has been relegated to the shelf due to a damaged focusing screen) and a Yashica-A TLR which is one of my favourite cameras (and my first MF camera).

Thanks for reading.

Heath - you'd better hurry with that roll of film through the J before that new box of toys arrives! :) Boy I hate it when a parcel is slow to arrive. My Lynx took 10 days to arrive, and when I opened the parcel there was a mouldy Voigtlander inside! Took another week to sort it out. But, was worth waiting for :D

Chris, that box of cameras is for the cold winter nights that are coming sooner than expected this year. Most will probably end up on the shelf after a clean up, depending on the condition of the bellows.

I have a Yashica J. I got it a couple of months ago and have only run one roll through it but it came out fine. I'd rank the J a little below the Electros but it is a handy camera and easy to use.

Hey everyone. I just purchased a Yashica J aswell. Its my first Rangefinder ever.
I love the look and feel of old camera's, so I've decided to start in the Rangefinder game.
Its all quite new to me, coming from camera's that do pretty much everything for you to camera's that do nothing! But it is fun.
One question, the yellow spot in my camera seems quite dim, is this normal?
Also, its strange not having an inbuilt meter! Does anyone have any tips for metering? I got given a very old looking meter when I bought a camera once (The meter says Jonan-Junior on it) will this be any good?

Thanks for all the help!

Don't know about the meter. There's a good tip on Rick Oleson's site on the dim rangefinder spot. You put a small piece of tape over the center of the viewfinder just big enough to match the patch. I tried it on a Lynx that was really dim. Danged if it doesn't work!

Wow thanks for that! I did a search and put some tape over and it works really well!

Cheers!

What kind of tape, how large, and which window is it placed over?

Tks. bmarkmain

Here's the link:

I used black electrical tape, and as for the size, just estimated how much would cover the yellow part in my viewfinder, just play around, you can come up with some amazing things.
Good luck

I have one but I seldom use it. I prefer the Electros, especially the Lynx. There is nothing wrong with the J, but there is nothing out of the ordinary about it.

The Lynx is not an Electro but it's a great camera indeed.

Heath, what kind of camera is that in your avatar? It looks familiar but I can't place it.
