View Full Version : "x" steps from your door--project idea.
I've been thinnkiong about this for a little while and thought I'd post this idea for a project.
Simply, photos taken "x" number of steps from your door. "x" being some random number--more about this in a bit--the idea is that we each take the same number of steps and shoot a photo. A different number each day for a week, maybe. Post results here in this thread or in a W/NW thread.
The random number--I'm not sure how the best way to get the number.
One idea I had is to look at the number of people on line here at RFF and use that number. The main thing is that the number is the same for all of us for each day.
Suggestions, questions, other ways to get the number to any one who wants to play?
Rob
All sorts of random number generators on the web- you can set bounds on most of them.
Could be a fun project...

Steps...... You mean walking? Let's limit the radom generator to 100.
(just kidding)

I'll go see what's out there. I was also thinking of using something like the lottery's daily number--here in NY state that is a three digit number generated twice daily. The plus of that is that everybody could look at it and see the same number and by using something like that, it is fairly random. Not me picking a number because I know there is something photogenic x number of steps from my door. And the max steps would be 999 (see below).
Yep, walking. And I do think a limit is good. Maybe a bit higher than 100 though.

This sounds cool but...I live in an apt complex and anything less than 50 would have me in the parking lot. Lots of pictures of telephone poles towards the sky. Or parked cars. If it's an RF, I can't do macro or anything like that. Just suggesting that the number be larger if possible.
Part of this idea is that it is a series of photos and the random number will make some days tougher than others for each of us. A bit of a challenge is good , I think.
And, even though this is RFF, I wasn't wanting to make any camera restrictions part of this idea.

If it's more than 200 steps it's not photogenic.
But I'll play.
All my photos are within 174 steps anyway.
I know because I counted once.
Sad, but true.

Cool idea, I'm game!
Jon, Nice shots! For as small a town as I imagine you live in, it seems to have plenty of excitement!
OK, I just went to http://www.random.org/ (http://www.random.org/) and used their "integer generator" to generate a list of 36 random numbers between 0 and 999.
I am going to use this for the next roll of film in one of my cameras. And I am going to use the same numbers for one shot a day with my digi.
I have to go back to work in a few minutes, not sure if I'll have time to walk 405 steps to day before dark...
The list:
405
845
590
6
415
682
663
295
920
871
130

I'm going to--it will let me keep track of my photos--and I'm going to also shoot my digi camera--which will let me see some results quicker.

Did I miss something?
Are we going to shoot 36 shots on one roll of film, one shot per day?
10 steps, I'll find a horse.
50 steps, I'll find a sheep.
75-100 steps, I might get lucky and see a cow.
And all the in-between steps might prove a bit messy? ;)

What did folk do before Wellington boots?:D
The sheep were likely less harassed.
Actually, a neighbor makes real leather wellington boots, and I've always fancied a pair.

Thank you for that.
If you look around you'll always find photo opportunities anywhere.
I just enjoy weird, and it happens here all the time!

You sure live in a different kind of neighborhood than I do. I may miss a lot of photo ops, but I think that's a good thing.

Yep, I was also going to suggest care not to cut your foot. But then maybe you don't walk barefoot there. :D :D

Well, I guess I am in on this one. I just couldn't go with Keith's otherwise clever idea; not over the holidays.
Any time, lens, or film limits?

I live in a really small city with a lot of brothels! I think there are about six or so, but they open and close all the time.
These women all come here from Lisbon (one hour away) each night and want a coffee and cigarettes before starting work listening to saddo men.
The women are really friendly when they stop for coffee. I've known many of them for years and we often chat about the football scores and the weather.
I am thinking of this as a longer term idea but I also don't want to dictate to anyone how they approach it.
So is there no time scale? Could we shoot the lot on one day?
No, I think the fewer "rules" the better. Some of the project ideas I've seen before seem to get bogged down in those details; for some ideas, those limits are relevant but for this my thinking is that the only unfying thing would be the number of steps.
Any time, lens, or film limits?

I'd love to try something like this. I live in a suburban neighborhood where there ALWAYS seems to be something going on.
Good idea, but when I submit pictures of the Arch of Triumph, don't say I am cheating, it is in my street ;)
