Just interested to see where and for what people are picking up their kits for, a nice point of reference for anyone looking maybe.

I have not bought mine yet but have seen prices here in China as low as 5400 Yuan for grey market (no warranty) which is $790 USD. For non grey market with two year warranty the normal price seems to be about 6000 Yuan ($878 USD). Both of those are for the 14-45mm kit, have not seen any twin lens kits here yet.

UK purchase price is £550 (with a cashback of £50 with 3-year warranty by redemption) net price £500.

I'm planning to wait for the Olympus version, but pricing for Amazon US is significantly cheaper ($668) with the 14-45 zoom. In addition, there are other incentives here that might reduce the price anywhere from 10 to 30% less.

That's a great price, Joe.

The sort that would tip the scales for me. Otherwise, the cheapest I could get it would be well over $700 PLUS... The ebay sellers with lower priced auctions ship by UPS that immediately adds $100 for shipping plus automatic import duties. Amazon doesn't ship that item here yet, etc., etc., :bang:

$600 from ProDigital2000 in Canada. They're a little rough around the edges, but I get my Pentax stuff from them CHEAP. (I'm expecting the 43mm Limited tomorrow in fact.)

I don't have a G1 by the way, I just checked eBay to see what their price was. Shipping is free.

check out their auction prices, on the g1 kit, some as low as 450 i believe.

I have been literally viewing the Prodigital listings daily. More selling between $500 to $550 than above that. Interestingly, their $599 Buy It Nows even close fast. Why do people do that?

This month for me... I have seen at least 4 completed Prodigital2000 sales for under $500. International warranty per their listings. Many good comments from various sources.

I bought mine for $668 from B&H Photo.

The black and the blue G1s were $699 - the red was about $30 cheaper, so that's what I bought.

Well, the retail price for the single lens kit here is Aus is 1499 AUD ($1067 USD) - and yet, we are still known as the lucky country :)

Probably because the BIN is already less that than the typical resellers, and the buyers don't do any completed auction research.

Yeah, I've seen them going for under $500 in some places, for the kit. New. Interestingly enough, I saw a few dollars difference between red, blue and black. ::shrugs shoulders::

I'm thinking I should move in before the prices become more inflated.

G1 prices are already starting to come down here, the local price was 6200 a week ago and this weekits 5900 yuan. In other cities the price was around 5900 before and is down to about 5600. Still though the import tax means the camera is 225 dollars more then it is in the states. Still waiting, lots of new crap cameras coming out right now, was kind of hoping for an announment on Olympus's m4/3 or Panasonic's HD cam though with CES already going on we may have to wait till PMA.

tbarker13
01-10-2009, 20:43
Yeah, if news was coming out of CES, it would have happened already, I would think.
I was at Panasonic's media briefing Wednesday afternoon. They talked about the G1, but didn't announce anything new in that line of cameras.

Was out souring out a G1 the other day, one guy at a Panasonic shop said something odd, the camera is so expensive no one is bothering to keep them in stock, just when they are ordered then they will bring one in. They had one demo model that you could handle but would not stick a battery in it because as he said "the camera remembers how many photos it takes" in other words "if you want to see what it can do buy it and find out." Nice...

Any business that can't afford or understand marketing enough to keep one kit on hand for demonstration to prospective buyers, and two on the shelf to sell, will not see any of my money. The economic crisis does not mean that you roll over and cease to use sound marketing practices when times are tough.

The store you visited is doomed if that's the way they think about demonstrating and selling product. Consequently, they won't be there when you need their help, which is the only justifiable reason for buying "locally". Well, that, and if you attend the same church as the store owner.

Prodigital2000 in Canada, is still clipping off 4 to 6 a week at under $550 on eBay. many under and close to $500.

But, I want everything and I want it now, so by playing the price drop game I end up with less stuff at a decent price.

I'll probably wait for the Panasonic version, or I'll break down and get the Oly 520 kit.

Yeah but typical Chinese shop hospitality "if you want to see one pay up first then we will think about it". All the shops around here are pretty rude though. Thank goodness for the internet, except here in China if you buy something like this online more often then not you will get damaged/refurbished/used goods being pushed as new.

sadly no because they are notoriously hard on taxes for incoming items like cameras and such in these parts and of the couple of times I have got items from overseas shipped to me here, many times the items dont arrive or the boxes arrive with items missing and I dont think it is worth that risk.

I once got a book on amazon and had it mailed to me here, there was a hole in the side of the box and no book. Nice ugly box though. It is totally worthless to try and file a claim here, you might as well just throw your petition in a garbage can. Once my aunt sent me a care package from the states, guess the guy who opened my box decided to help himself to the candy and other things in it. Then they dont bother to really tape the thing up and you get a half empty box.

Also for used cameras and stuff they still check pretty hard. Basically the only way is to have someone buy it for me and when they come over bring it with them but dont take the boxes or any of the wrappings or what not. That is one of the reasons I am really worried about sending my Zeiss 50 Planar off for a servicing, it might make it to where ever it needs to be but a good bet would be that since I would send it in its box then it would most likely get taxed coming in. They are relentless about those things here.

When I lived in China I used to travel back to Canada or the US 2-3 times a year. I would do anything that needs to be done at that point... shipping stuff into China is indeed a PITA. I'm confused a bit about this though:

I have traveled several times between the states and China in the last 5 years and I get searched pretty hard when I get into China. If you bring say a camera with you and you have the box too then they will give you grief for it, at least that is my experience. Last time I went to HK I bought a Zeiss lens and put the Styrofoam in my shoes and broke the box down and had it well packed into a special spot on my suitcase just in case. Maybe it is me being obsessive but I would rather play it safe.

I have not heard any problems about IR problems with the G1. I doubt you really need IR filters on the G1 but I dont know if it would really hurt anything either to leave them on.

back alley
02-01-2009, 06:29
no need for ir filters on the g1.

you have to buy an expensive camera for that ;)

Eric T
02-01-2009, 06:33
I realize that the IR filters are not necessary on the G1. I am just asking whether it does any harm to image quality on the G1 to just leave them on M lenses.
I presume there is not harm in doing so but I wonder if anyone out there has tested it.

digitalintrigue
02-01-2009, 06:39
I wouldn't think it would do anything other than filter out specific wavelengths and maybe add some very slight optical imperfections as all filters do.

I have traveled several times between the states and China in the last 5 years and I get searched pretty hard when I get into China.

I know of someone who is in the high tech business, who used to travel to China very often. He lives in Texas and is an avid hunter.

On his last trip (and yes, it will be his last) his bag was searched and they found a rifle bullet stuck in a small crevice in one of his bags. He had used the same bag for a previous hunting trip. He had used the bag on several previous trips to China and it was never found on those earlier trips.

He was arrested, taken to prison, and given the death penalty. I won't describe the prison conditions, but feel free to use your imagination.

Only after the manufacturing company in China was able to intercede on his behalf (due to their client being a large US concern; this took over six months.) During this time he had very limited contact with lawyers, etc. to know what his status was. As far as he knew, he actually was eventually going to be executed.

The CEO of the manufacturing company took responsibility for him, he had to literally stay in house arrest at the manufacturing company, he lived in one of the office's next to the CEO's office during this time (several months) and then he was finally released to go back to the US.

I cant find the 500 dollar kits anywhere either now. Prices seem to have gone up about a hundred dollars on those cheap kit places. The prices here though have not budged and I find that annoying since its already 200 some dollars more then over there and G1's are not selling well here because they are about 1800 yuan more then a Canon 450D with 18-55 IS kit and more then 2000 more then the Nikon equivalent.
