2008 – 2009 14 Day One Camera One Lens Challenge.

Proposed Rules and Schedule.

Commencing midnight 17th December 2008

Ending midnight 31st Dec 2008 (New Years Eve)

Camera Choice/one only … open but this is the only camera body you can use for leisure (non pro) photography for the stated period.

Lens Choice/one only … open but no zooms and also the only lens you can use for leisure (non pro) photography for the stated period.

Film/Memory Card Usage … as much as you want as often as you want.

Flash Usage … yes.

Cropping … mild cropping is ok but not landscape to portrait or vice versa.

Subject Material … portraits/landscapes/street whatever you want within reason.

Images To Be Submitted … three maximum, less if you think you’re that good you can win this thing with one.

The gallery for hosting your input will be closed on the 14th January at midnight … this allows you two weeks to get yourself organised after the 14 day shooting period ends and get your files/submissions uploaded. If you don’t think you can manage this, don’t partake!

A judging system for this competition is yet to be decided … I’m open to suggestions but I favour a small panel of judges made up of respected experienced forum members with suitable qualifications. Volunteers for this arduous task would receive my eternal gratitude … but not much else! Stephen has suggested just using the system of members voting for their favourites in the gallery.

The winner/winners will receive the plaudits and constant admiration of fellow forum members for some time to come … but in reality, little else! We are just here for the fun of it after all. :)

Count me in. Leica Model A w/close focus Elmar loaded with either Tech Pan 25 or Efke 25 will fit the bill.

P.S. to make things fair... I'm back from Iraq.

Cheers!

I'm in, too. With my Contax going off to Eddie, it's going to be SLR time. Canon T90 w/ a nice old FD 50/1.4 lens... let's make a virtue out of a necessity! :D

@keith - hope so!! still trying to figure out how i managed to completely mangle my last roll of provia. looks like it was already exposed before going into the camera. the other rolls came out fine...so definitely a user error on my part.

I'll guess the rolleiflex suits me best for this.

FED-2 and an I-22.

A pair so nice it's a crime,
so nice they had to make it rhyme.

FED-2 and I-22
take it out my pocket and fondle it in the loo.

This is going to encourage some weird choices I supect. At the moment I'm torn between my Crown Graphic with the stock 135mm lens, 1930 Leica 1a with fixed f3.5 5cm Elmar and my Kiev II and Jupiter 3.

Choosing my Ikon and 50mm Hex would just seem ilogically seamless! :p

I hear you. With the Contax broken, I thought about several of them (Graphic & Contaflex especially) but I wanted to at least have a nice meter available for the family snappies over Christmass along with the project shots. So the Tank is it for me. (But if I owned that Leica, I'd probably go with it ;) )

Not as catchy as Climbing Vine's jingle but just as fondle-able in the loo.

Last time I used the 1930 1a I broke it which required a trip to Youxin ... who I might mention chastised me for using such a beautiful camera so casually. He loves 1a's and has one himself and pointed out to me that mine was in far nicer condition than his and maybe I should consider being a little more judicious with my use of it in future!

That said it is the hot favourite at the moment. :)

I walked into a camera store today and fondled a Bronica SQ. Looking down into that waist level finder & thinking about those nice 6x6 negs! I want that camera bad. I think! By the 14th would be nice. But I have to think rational. I'm in.... but what to use?

My R4 is in Denmark on a graffiti shooting project with Adox CMS20 at the moment.

Next time I will be in with my Nokton 35 1.4 MC on the R2

RE cropping ... I have nothing against cropping at all and do it myself regularly. I just thought for this event/exercise whatever you want to call it, it would be nice to see all the images exactly as the camera/shooter saw them at the time of the shot.

You can always crop them later when it's all over! :p

I'm up for the challenge, I know which camera I'd like to use, but as the roolz sez I can only use one camera and one lens for the whole two weeks my 1966 Brownie will have to sit on the shelf.

Hopefully I'll have some new kit (thanks to Richard's thread) to get to know and this will be a great opportunity to do just that.

I'm in, I think. I'm going to use a Rollei AFM35 which I just bought [and where the first roll I've have developed is very promising]. I'm really looking forward to shooting with just a compact for a few weeks.

I may have to cheat and shoot with another camera on Christmas day as my family may expect jpegs rather than waiting several weeks for film scans. I'll do my best, though.

Keith, when you say no cropping, what exactly do you mean? Well, I know what cropping is, but I guess I wonder if you mean absolutely no cropping? For example, if I print my 35mm neg on 5x7 paper, it necessitates some cropping. Is that OK?

If so, I'm in. M6 classic, 50mm Summarit and HP5+.

Hi Dan,

I guess I was being a little tongue in cheek with the no cropping remark ... I think we should just exercise a little restraint and not crop from landscape to portrait or vice versa, or anything quite that extreme.

Hey ... if the bartender had his way it'd be no SLR's DSLR's or anything that wasn't a rangefinder. Luckily I don't remember him suggesting that to me! :p

So your prints have perforation holes and all these KODAK/ILFORD/AGFA words, along with frame numbers?

This question is actual to me, because I scan prints and cropping is natural there, + I don't like to waste paper since it is not cheap.

Don't worry Gavin ... with two days to go I haven't decided either yet.

I considered my Crown Graphic but the thought of lugging that around in the current heat in Brisbane doesn't excite me much ... but I wouldn't mind staying away from 35mm for the two weeks so I'm now leaning towards my Bronica RF 645.

But this could change of course! :p

Crown Graphic and Brisbane heatbowl sounds like a decent effort Keith - although it would certainly be different.

You've given me a great idea though... There's a little old Holga that's only been used a few times so far sitting in my cupboard - Maybe I should shoot down to photo continental in Mt Gravatt and pick up some 120 rolls.... Hmmm. Would be interesting to use the holga with a tiny flash and the 120 film on new years night. It's certainly out of my comfort zone...

Only ten hours to go for me here and I may have made a decision. I have to spend the day in the city tomorrow while I wait to get some work done on my trusty Vespa and I see it as an opportunity to do a 'Winogrand' ... which is rare for me as I generally avoid this style of photography.

So it will definitely be a rangfinder and either a 50mm or 35mm ... the R3A and either 35 or 50 Hex is looking good at this late stage! :)

I'm suddenly wavering now. I've got a FD 35/2 chrome nose lens coming - this is one of the legendary lenses from Canon made with thorium glass and a near permanent light yellow cast as a result. I'm thinking that if I get it in time, I'll use it & BW400CN instead of the 50/1.4 SSC. I'm a 50 person. A couple weeks of forcing myself to use a 35 instead would be good for me no matter what else comes out of this project.

I really am stumpped! Thanks a lot, Keith! ;) With so much gear I really have hard time deciding what to use for this. One day I think it'll be a Welta folder, next day - Kowa/six ( you see I try to push for MF), but than I think it'd be easier to use 35mm film, so I think it'd be Hexar RF with .....what lens? On one hand I'd like a challenge and use one of the lenses I dont use often, but than on the other - I'm just so used to 50mm. WHat to do, what to do? ........

Keith
12-16-2008, 05:05
Well it's a minute to midnight here in Oz and I've made my choice ... out of the blue I chose my M2 and 35mm Hexanon ... I start shooting tomorrow in the city while I wait for my Vespa to be serviced!

My biggest problem once I'd decided on the M2 was whether to use my 50mm or 35mm Hexanon ... the 35mm came up trumps for versatility and definitely the best choice for some 'street' tomorrow to kick the two weeks off!

Good luck everyone and I hope to start seeing some brilliant stuff in the gallery in fourteen days from now! :) :)

Just for the records, after some test shots, I'll use an M6 instead of M4-P with the 35/1.4 SC. :) Fit's the framelines better, too, for those Xmas portraits, hopefully.

I have a trip to the mountains next week, and I may need more versatility in lens options, ranging from 19mm-500mm for nature and wildlife photography. Too bad for me.

Good luck everyone! :)

I hear you man. Christmas is coming and I have family including grandkids. I don't think I can limit myself to one camera and one prime. I expect my church will want me to take photos again like for Thanksgiving. That will prevent limitations.

Oh well. If this is that fun and succesful it will no doubt be repeated.

So, I have chickened out on the R2a and 135 idea; there are going to be too many indoor/family/friends/holiday shots over the next two weeks.
And the Retina is pretty nice but I don't know it well enough yet.
My final answer:
R2a and rigid Industar 50.
Rob
OK, I want to play as well. I am thinking of two fairly different cameras for this; either the Retina IIIC or Bessa R2a and Jupiter-11...
I'll decide before the 17th.

I think that should count as "work" and be OK if you used something different for that. And still use one camera and lens otherwise.

Interesting, I may try it too - with a Rolleiflex T. But are thre any more datailed rules to be followed, or itis just a "whatever you manage to shoot within next 4 weeks" contest?

What will be the webpage to submit, what are the conditins for the photos (size, etc)?

Hmm. Would a GR-D II count? One camera, one lens? Or should I go with the Mess Ikonta? Or, given that my 5x4 tank just arrived, should I just go with the Bender 4x5?

Though I'd have to cheat on "assignments" from my wife ... it's Christmas and there are kids and family to be photographed.

I was thinking that people who are being asked to take photos in situations like Xmas gatherings with expectations from family to 'get it right' and probably digital ... or photos for the church as described earlier ... a little rule bending should be allowed . In other words use your own discretion as to what you think is fair.

We don't want to get too damned serious about all this rules and regulations stuff ... we're supposed to be having fun after all! :)

As for the question about where to post photos etc ... hopefully Stephen can organise an appropriate gallery for us when the time is appropriate and normal sizing rules etc will apply.

I don't see a problem with that! :D

My choice is already giving me anxiety ... I chose a 35mm lens to use with my M2 and I'm already wishing I'd stuck with 50mm which is my 'natural' length.

One of the really satisfying things that's coming out of this for me, and it may be the same for some others, is using a camera that normally sits in the cupboard! When I chose my M2 for this competition I hadn't used it in a long time ... six months or more in fact and I think in the two plus years I've had this camera I've only put a few rolls through it.

I'm totally amazed at just how good the M2 is in a wide variety of conditions and it makes me wonder if perhaps my Ikon isn't the best rangefinder I own after all. I was shooting the M2 in the near dark last night with my 35mm f2 Hexanon and Tri-X pushed to 1600 and was impressed at how easy it was to focus in these conditions.

I decided to use the M6 + 35 Summicron. I was to meet my daughter in Stockton (CA) yesterday and then we would ride Amtrak home. I reasoned that this would be a good opportunity to do a little street shooting in an unfamiliar city and so gave myself about six hours before my daughter's bus arrived in Stockton.

When Amtrak pulled into the station and I disembarked, eager and ready to spot images, I was greeted by very cold temps and rain. I quickly shifted from photographic to survival mode. After wandering the mean streets of downtown Stockton and getting soaking wet, I ducked into a movie theater complex and dried out for a couple of hours.

I still had several hours to kill when I came out and the rain was still coming down, but the temperature had dropped. More walking, using canopies, trying to protect my camera case, looking for a warm, dry place on a Sunday when nothing was open.

I finally found a little hole-in-the wall Mexican restaurant where I ate chile verde, talked with the owner (I was the only customer) and stalled until they had to close. I then walked/ran to the train station where I met my daughter's bus and we had one more hour to wait for the train. There was a nice, warm, cozy train station but, on the weekend, IT WAS CLOSED! So we braved the wind and rain and cold for one more hour until Amtrak finally showed up.

Net result:

Zero pictures

The weather in the Northeast is not being very cooperative either, unless you like shooting in a zero degree wind chill with snow turned to ice on the ground. I suppose a real photographer would, but probably not me.

You are not alone.
I had to do some tests with my bronica and pushed hp5 on MF so I shot it today... so I would know what to expect from it during new year meeting...

Well, at least I had fun using one camera one lens, because I don't spend time thinking on what to use when I go out.
And I will not give up, I still will try to keep myself strict about using one gear till the Jan 1st.

I'm sure you won't be the only one ... we are only human after all and the lord forgives all sinners!

Now that you have confessed this sin, and I'm sure there are others like you, just make sure that your submissions to the gallery (when I organise it with Stephen) are truly heavenly!

Me ... I've managed not to stray and after a couple of weeks of shooting my M2 and 35mm Hex I've become incredibly comfortable with it and the relationship may well continue past the comp close date. Every now and then I flip the M2's preview lever to remind myself what the 50mm framelines look like and I have to say ... that focal length is starting to look like a short tele!
