It took me a few auctions to learn that while I wanted a certain item, it didn't need to be the one I'm currently bidding on. Now, I set a maximum price I'll go to, and stick with it. It took me 10 or 12 tries to get my FD 35-105 lens without seriously overpaying.

I can't say the same for all of my cameras though...
