... I would be using two Leica R6.2 SLRs one with a 28 the other with a 75 and a Leica M6 with a 50... I would be shooting Kodachrome 64, 200 and Trix only for B&W.

But since it isn't, what do you do?

I shoot with two DSLRs and I hate them because they're heavy and in control of the image making more than me.

In an ideal world I would have an apartment in Kadriorg and another one somewhere by the mediterrenean sea. I would have a Leica MP and an M3. I would have a freezer which contains 1000 rolls of tri-x. I would know some languages (italian, spanish, norwegian, romanian, serbian, french and german). I would be a people person and I would travel a lot.

I dont live in an ideal world, but all of the above is attainable :)

What a weird idea. I have never, ever felt, in any way, that a camera was more in control of image making than I am.

How can that be? It is just a tool. Some are different than others, but in the end, you control what it sees and records.

Nicely put.

If I'd spent as much time on learning Tibetan as I spend on this site, I'd probably be reasonably fluent by now.

In an ideal world I'd be living and working in the same zip code, and own a Porsche and an MP.

I'll settle for being employed, a Nissan and a CL.

I'm pretty happy with how things are. Sure I wouldn't complain if someone handed me a lot of money, but I like things the way they are now.

In an ideal world I'd have had a camera handy to photograph the three foxes playing on my front lawn. 4 ack emma is a little too early for my poor brain.

in..... I'd be King of the Universe, you'd all give me fine gifts of film, lenses, exotic cameras the occasional Leica and you'd tell me I was brilliant photographer. None of the above is attainable.

I'm going for "recently expired film that has always been stored in a freezer" (lol, right! ;D), GSN's, Kievs, and stepping up to 'bargain level' MF equipment at KEH because it's way way better than what I've got.

Me too, but it would have to be the 15-pounds-overweight version from Bridget Jones's Diary. The skinny one I could take or leave.

So what is it about your SLR's that makes you feel less in control than with your RF's? I've been shooting lately with a Pentax ME Super and an R4A, and they both feel about the same in terms of both size and control.

Nope, I like the skinny one better. :)

Geez Rick, is there anything we can agree on? Do you like tofu burritos? The race-transcending raps of Vanilla Ice? The romantic landscapes of Thomas Kincaid? "Porky's III"? There has to be something. ;-)

Most people here who own a Lieca seem more than happy, as well as convinced there are no better cameras. That is good for them. I know some DISR owners who are happy. I have lots of cameras, and try to use all of them once in a while.

I have yet to feel controlled by any of them. Do you not have anything but two DSLR cameras. Perhaps you should expand your horizons.

You know what, Nh3, I missed that you said "DSLRs", not "SLRs." Can I recommend the Pentax K20D with old K and M42 lenses? The camera is set up better than most DSLRs for manual use--it is very easy to turn on and off the various forms of automation. It's also smaller, lighter, and more comfortable to hold than other cameras of its quality, and has a really nice sensor. Crop sensor, but still.

How dare you imply that I may like Thomas Kincaid.

As far as the other things go, well, you never know......;)

Right now I'm the Nikon camp and I have a lot of lenses and two Nikon DSLRs and one film SLR.

But I'm waiting for full frame to become more common and then I will decide which system to stick with.

In an ideal world, EVERYONE would be happy with what they've got...

Yup.

After a certain age, you start to count your blessings. Even though some of them are not what they were, e.g. reliable knees and an uninterrupted night's sleep, there may be others that get better.

Cheers,

R.

In an Ideal World, I'd get to feed small groups of appreciative people, live on the shore of a mountain lake, have some time for my hobby, and make decent money...oh, wait. I do.

I do disagree that in this "Ideal World" everyone should be happy with what they've got; I know (and know of) too many people who don't have such a good life and they should, I think, be unhappy with their lot. From that discontent I hope they will make things better for themselves.

Well back in 2005 when I lived one mile from work I was happier than now, but I'm still eating and have a roof over my head, so I'm only complaining about the commute these days. 135 miles each way can be a bummer. Especially when most of it is on the NJ Turnpike and the Belt Parkway.

Now if I could telecommute from a cabin on Seventh Lake, THAT would be an ideal world for sure. At least in the summer...

Why then don't you sell them & buy what you want? Don't you have a black Yashica? Why are you always shooting with a DSLR instead of a rangefinder?

135 miles? OUCH, Al! Seventh Lake is very pretty, even in the winter. And as annoying as the Black Flies are, they are only here for a couple of weeks or so. With my job, I go back to Cortland and cook on campus in between the sessions up here. I'm scheming about not having to do that but I need to keep the benefits (insurance and retirement). So my world is not really perfect though it is close enough!

For the most part I love my job (I'm self employed), my wife is drop dead gorgeous and much too good for me, I have 3 beautiful daughters (the eldest lives in Japan and is marrying a photographer) and own and use amongst others an M6ttl, Hexar RF and 8 lenses. I'm in excellent health and spend my annual break each Christmas doing what I love the most in life, hiking in the mountains of New Zealand. Every time I cross a road I'm ultra carefull because I know some ******* is just waiting out there to stuff all this up.

I used to go out with a woman whose family summered in Old Forge every August, and spend a few weekends up there and in Inlet. Is the Red Dog Tavern still in business? I once spent most of Thanksgiving Weekend there back in 1986 or 1987...

We went out to eat at some place at the end of a dirt road that was on the Stillwater Resevour.

Never did want to drive from the Phiily area to upstate NY in winter though.

Yes, the Red Dog is still there though it is not owned by Kristy anymore--she has a new place that I haven't been to yet.
And driving anywhere in upstate in winter isn't much fun. Thankfully, I do it once to get up here and then I'm "in" for the season. Just some snowmobiling to pick up my food(about 1200 pounds worth on a sled I tow behind me) once a week and take the trash to the dump. That's not much fun either!

I like the well rounded RZ better too, but actually I've had it with young blonds. Give me a woman with a sense of humor, and I'll follow her anywhere. Oh wait, I do!

But back to the ideal world, Kodak would still make HIE, make and process Kodachrome 25 and there would be new Polaroid 55 rolling off the assembly line in Massachusetts.

I've kinda come to like the upstate winters...once we got a wood stove, it came to sometimes seem almost like a treat. The only problem is finding stuff to shoot.
