View Full Version : Hope for new Fuji folder
While we are waiting for Photokina hoping to see the official announcement from Fuji about their new retro design folder camera. I would like to put out a poll about the desired focal length equal to 35mm.

A normal lens for a 6x7 is about 90mm when defined as sqrt(sqr(width) + sqr(height)).
When I use larger formats, I am used to the wide of view of the normal lens. So I'm hoping it is a 90mm which would be 38mm in 135 format which is close enough to 35mm.
However for people shots outdoors with a 35mm camera, I prefer a lens that is a little longer, ie. a 50mm lens. This preference doesn't apply so much when I use larger formats since I have much more resolution to work with when cropping.

21mm biogon design, f4.5.
Next poll I was planning on will be about film size:
6x6, 6x7 (as the mock-up had), 6x9

I'm pretty sure that the one at Photokina had a 90mm or 85mm lens, which would be around 35mm equivalant. I'm happy with that, although I wouldn't mind it if the lens were a bit longer. 6x7 suits me fine.

I'll take one each in 21mm, 40mm and 75mm please and thank you.

80 mm it was. Measured on the diagonal of 56x70 mm it is like 39 mm on a 24x36 mm frame.
In my opinion it should have a 56 x 82 mm frame size, the maximum that can be scanned on a Nikon LS 8000 and it should have an 80 or 75 mm wide angle lens. Then it actually is close to the 35 mm on 35 mm and close to the 2/3 ratio of 35 mm. The lens can still be small enough for a folder and get some WA appeal. A landscape camera in the first place.

My Baldafix has a metal plate that you place in the film chamber, and the camera shoots 6x4.5, without the plate it's 6x9. Something similar to that would be nice (having 2 formats that is).

Fuji wouldn't mind to add that if the film transport is kept at 7 or 8 cm. They are in it to sell film.

As had been discussed on rff before, several old folders did that, usually reducing 6x9 to 6x6, or 6x6 to 645. The Mamiya Press cameras had a 6x9 back that could be changed to either 6x6 or 645. It required masks not only for the film holder, but in the viewfinder as well (and for different lens focal length). The backs show up on ebay all the time. The masks are harder to come by.

Why would you need anything other than 35mm? :p
If it were to be 6x6, that would be great. If no meter is available, no sweat. If it will be made at all and for under $1500, well that would be stupendous. :D

6x6 with a wide lens (50 or 40) would be ideal for me. I suspect I'm alone in that.
Hasn't it already been announced that the camera is a 6x7 with a widish normal lens? (40mm equiv. in 135 format)

The prototype shown was an 80mm f3.5, so yes...widish (and about right for me).

Hate to burst any bubbles but I heard this is a novelty camera - a run of the mill digital P&S that only looks like a folder.

Where did you hear that from?
I had the distinct impression that it was a prototype of a possible film camera.
Steve, I think Nick is joshing us that the camera will only appear to be a retro-cool folder and have just another digicam inside. :D I.E., too good to be true?
Like a swoopy looking sports-GT car that turns out to actually be a VW beetle with the old body hacked off...

40mm equivalent will be fine by me. I trust it will take both 120 and 220. And if it has the ability to accept another format (6x4.5?) that would be great, but 6x7 cameras don't seem to have that capability.
One of the caveats when talking about focal length equivalents between 35mm and 6x6/6x7 are the rather different aspect ratios.
It has always struck me how much wider an 80mm on 6x6 appears than a 40-ish lens on 35mm film. Both focal lengths may be the same as the frame's diagonal, but the difference lies in the short side of 36mmx24mm frame. Especially if you also factor in that printing is rarely ever done full frame, or that slide mounts also gobble up some of the edges.
Cropping away 1mm top and bottom of 24mm high frame is much more invasive from taking away the same of a 56mm frame. The net result is that 80mm is ca. 1.5x the 6x6 frame side as printed, and 40mm is ca. 1.8x the short side of small format as printed, and so much 'roomier' (is that a word?).
In my book 80mm on MF 6x6/6x7 is perfect.

And that is why I no longer have my chromes mounted. You have to kiss good bye to too much slide real estate when you scan it if it's mounted.

The wikipedia on the GF670 lists the 80mm lens (already chosen as shown on the prototype), is the 35mm equivalent of 35mm focal length.

On the diagonal of 56x82 mm (typical 6x9 size) it would be the equivalent of 35 on 24x36 mm. On 56x72 mm (Linhof ideal format) it is like a 38 mm lens on 24x36 mm. But many brands nibble at the frame size length and you are lucky if it is 70 mm, some go down to 67 mm. Then it's more like 40 mm in my book and not WA enough. Not to speak of the chance the lens actually is 82 mm and gets the label 80 mm.

6x9 with 50mm equiv..
Yummy!

Yes, Fuji do like to do wide lenses, so I'd expect to see a 35mm equivalent at launch and a 28mm equivalent after six months. That way we'll all buy two cameras!
Much like their Klasse W and Klasse S strategy a year or so ago.
I'm waiting for the 6x7 folder, and hoping they do something twenty first century design-wise such as replacing the traditional 'leather' with carbon fiber or neoprene.
Also, when they launched the Natura cameras they had Natura film to match. I wonder if there will be a range of 6x7 films for the new camera, perhaps following Rollei's film initiatve but taking it into color too.
One more week to go until Photokina 2008.
