View Full Version : Anyone had this problem with their m8?

I hope that someone might be able to help... I was shooting yesterday and after noticed something a bit weird... After going to review the images the back of the screen it just showed a black screen and with the text of a jpg file name - something like "L1005169.jpg" (I am shooting RAW + JPG). Also several images seem to be missing as I was reviewing the images.

After viewing the images on the computer there were several missing (which was represented in the gap in numbering).

I am out of town so I have not been able to run File recovery on the card, but I was wondering if anyone else had run into similar problems.

Thanks in advance.
Jason

I have had it happen with two different cards....

sounds like bad memory cards to me.
I had something similar happen to me due to the card reader being faulty...making me think my camera or cards were bad, but since your problem was indicated even in-camera my advice would be to ditch those cards.

what card did you use?

I had that issue with another camera many years ago. It really sounds like there's a problem with the card.

Did both of your cards happen to be the same brand? Buy a Kingston, Lexar, Patriot Memory, or, if you really really must, a Sandisk Ultra (or Extreme)

both of the cards were transcend 45x 4gb cards. They were all I had on vacation so I will have to wait until I get back to check them. Thanks for all of your advice and if anyone has had the same exact problem please let me know.

I tried the Transcend and they didn't work in my M8. I never use anything larger than a 2gb card. As well, make sure that after ever download, you reformat the card in the cmaera. This will help prevent read/write errors.

I would have suggested exactly the same thing as Keith is suggesting - nothing larger than 2GB and I always use SanDisk Extreme II or Extreme III cards.

So far *touches wood*, no issues.

Ditto what Dave said, plus I will add the the Extreme II and III also write the fastest, which is a big plus with fast shooting situations. I have had problems with Transend SD and CF cards. They seem to work for most people but not me.

Why fear SanDisk? I've got a 2GB Ultra II and a 4GB Extreme III (they're both CF, however) and neither have done me wrong in tens of thousands of pictures.

Cards:
a: know where you buy them, there are fakes aplenty
b: know where you buy them, there are fakes aplenty
c: 2 GB and the M8 fit together wonderfully
d: never trust them and never use the same card in another type of camera witout reformatting to FAT on the computer

I have a combination of Sandisk II and III and Kingston 50x and 150x and have been using them back and forth between my M8 and DLux-3 without a single problem...

I never take a partly-filled card from the M8 and put it in the DLux-3, but although I reformat the cards in the camera I'm using them in, I've never reformatted any of them on the computer.

So am I heading for a disaster at some point?

As long as it work, it works. The only time I had problems with my cards (Sandisk Ultra and extreme) it was when switching between the M8 and DMR.

I've had two SanDisk cards die on me in the middle of shooting in the past. Their Extreme cards are very good, though.

You get what you paid for. Unless it's made in C4in@. But what isn't these days, unless it's exquisitely, and lovingly handcrafted elsewhere? :)

I had the opposite happen with a card ... I took the 1gig Extreme out of my Canon A620 and used it in my M8 and it worked perfectly. When I put it back in the Canon it refused to read it and told me it was locked! :p

I'm going to break from the general consensus here and say it's almost definitely a problem with the flux capacitor.

Dave is right. You need to do this every time. I learned the hard way. I took some pictures and transferred them to my computer directly from the card. I put the card back in the camera and took a few more shots. Nothing showed up on the card. So I formatted the card in the camera and everything was fine.

It was Keith that said it :D but I'm willing to take the credt...hehe... :D

That said, the formatting of the card is important to prevent the usual "Hey, how come I'm shooting RAW but it says I have 485 images left ????" strangeness as well as other errors.

I usually format mine when I've already downloaded them via the card reader and want to clear the images for the next shoot.
