View Full Version : What does your other think about you photographing the opposite sex.
How does your wife, girlfriend, husband, or boyfriend feel about you taking photographs of the opposite sex? Last week I took a posed photograph of 4 young ladies. BTW it's in the gallery. I liked the way they we're dressed in that 50's kinda look. When my wife saw it the first thing out of her mouth was "What's this all about" I sat trying to find the words to say & feeling guilty, & really there was nothing to feel guilty about! I saw an opportunity for a photograph & I took it. I've been married to her for over 20 years so I think she is over it now. :D Got any stories or advise, or are you just plain lucky.

ok, as long as I don't commit adultery in my heart . :D

I imagine it would depend upon the location and the level of intimacy as well as my motivation for taking the photograph.
I don't believe my wife would have too many issues unless I wanted to do something she felt was odd, she's pretty open minded and we have a lot of trust. :). If she felt uncomfortable with what I had done or wanted to do, even after explaining it, the I simply wouldn't do it (or do it again!).
In life though it is easier to ask for forgiveness than for permission. :)
(I guess also, I would always think, Would I feel uncomfortable or unhappy if SHE were doing what I am intending to do, or have done? If the answer is yes, then its not really right to do it IMHO)
If you're talking about "Heavy Rebel Weekend", I'm thinking (hoping) she was just joshing you. I mean a photo of 4 women standing in the middle of the road, broad daylight, and a bunch of people standing around watching?

My wife is for anything that's the opposite of sex...wait...what was the question?
Photographing an attractive girl if I had a partner, which I don't currently, shouldn't be a problem IMO. Even if your intentions are somewhat voyeuristic theres a big difference between voyeurism and adultery. Partners of people who work in the sex industry or are are involved in the creation of pornography amaze me that they can get there heads around that ... but a lot do.
So what's in a pic ... nothing! :p

She wasn't joshing but she wasn't real upset about it either. I think it mainly comes from years spent watching soaps.:D
Is it Heavy Rebel Weekend? I count 5 women there, not 4. And I too hope your wife was joking/making fun, cause there is absolutely nothing in that pic to be worried about. I sure hope so at least. ;)
My mistake. It is 5. See that proves I wasn't lusting.:D I think she knows it's just a fun photo, but her statement did catch me a bit off guard. From dating women here in the south they seem to all have a more jealous streak in them than from women I dated up north. I was stationed in Philadelphia for 2 years & the women seemed more free spirited.

I did this one as a kind of hip shot in Cologne. Later, she saw it in my screen saver and loved it. Which, of course, leads me to think she doesn't care too much.
Or maybe that's what she wants me to think...
Here's the pic. She liked it a lot...

I have been a photographer way before any of my relationships. I have always taken photographs of any one or any subject. When I was younger I only photographed beautiful women now I photograph older beautiflu women. I've gotten older and so have my subjects.
I never had a conflict with any of my ladies.

Uber nice.
I'm ashamed to admit I took this pic purely because I thought the girl on the right was gorgeous!
So spank me! :p

Galfriend says: "if you took such a picture? What was that unfortunate quote from Jesse Jackson the other day?"
(I kid, folks, I kid. Mostly.)
I suppose my M.O. is that I can be so rapt by female beauty that the thought of picking up the camera to "'capture' some of that" (most of the time, anyway) seems sort of vulgar, as if I could capture lightning in a bottle or the like. Sometimes, by happenstance, I can render that on film. But I'm too busy with other photographic thoughts to pursue this too heavily.
And I have enough of a time getting the gal I'm with "just right". (In both my eyes, and, of course, hers.)

She couldn't care less.
Those who took pictures before met their other side, always can say "I did it before and you knew it".
"I took it because I liked play of light" is most worthless explanation, I think.
Being Androgynous... I tend not to think in terms of opposite sexes.
Being Celibate for quite some time.... no one of my friends, close or otherwise, are concerned about me having international hands. You know... Russian Hands and Roman Fingers.
Being agnostic, none of these concerns affect my spirituality.
Life is so much simpler than when I was young, arrogant, selfish, horny and righteous.
Now, can we just shoot some pictures, please?
She likes to look at the street shots I take of other girls. Yet, I must say that she always look better than the girls on my shots ;)

...hmm so whats the point of living? Im sorry, i just dont get that. I live for sex!
Taken Friday on Rue de Rivoli. Mmmmh, right, she wasn't there.
If we are lucky we will get another W/NW dedicated to pretty girls out of this!!

Did not say that I had not wasted a goodly portion of my youth on the "sins of the flesh". Ultimately one discovers how much of life is wasted on the "chase", especially when one is as successful as I used to be....
You'll figure it out. Life is much more rewarding when it belongs to you and not your hormones.
Getting back to the original question for a second.....
My wife doesn't concern herself with what or who I photograph. Most of what I shoot is street photography, and I'm more interested in the situation rather than whether my subjects are attractive, so it's not an issue. My Gay Pride shots of bare-breasted women? Again, no big deal.
Essentially, my wife considers me to be such an idiot that she's certain no other woman gay or straight, would sleep with me for free anyway.
My wife has no problem even if it's figure photography. She's an artist and has done life drawing of male figures. She understands art as i do. Now my first wife was a different story. No longer an issue though. FORTUNATELY!!!!!

I’m lucky in that I have a partner who is very understanding of my photography – although I have yet to take pictures of nudes (that I’m not dating, but that’s another story) we have talked about it at great length in the past and I’ve even purchased a book on the subject and Beth has no problem with the idea at all. The be all and end all is that she trusts me, a very simple but uncommon trait in humans, both male and female and not something that came natural to Beth (or to me either in earlier relationships) but we have been through a lot in our years together and she knows full well that she can trust me :)

If there's one thing that's certain, is that a "yes" is a "no", a "no" is a "yes", a "yes" is a "yes" and a "no" is a "no". Except, of course, when it doesn't apply :bang:
It's the Confuse-a-Cat method!
My wife has no problem with me taking any woman's photograph in any manner, but I think it all comes down to trust.

My girlfriend is fine with me photographing anyone except her. So I shot a friend from a compromising angle:

It's been an unusually busy year this year. The commercial studio has been busier than all but one year in the past twenty four and I've added three new art galleries that have kept me hopping. Three shows now behind me this year and two to go in November and December. Great to be this busy but it's left little time for fun.
Unfortunately I haven't had as much time for new documentary images this year. My moonshiner budies are in deep trouble and the main guy is going to do some federal time in Kentucky. The cock fighters have sold all their birds and nothing going there since some were arrested and the feds killed their birds. Big federal time for these guys too. Also the religious serpent guys are in trouble. Jamie Coots the main guy in Kentucky was just arrested with 42 copperheads, 6 timber rattlers, two king cobras, some cotton mouthes and a puff adder. It's against the law to own these in both TN and KY so my guess is he will do some time or at least be out of the serpent handling for a while. At the minimum there isn't going to be any photography in the church anytime soon.
Looking for new subjects that aren't in jail. Any thoughts???
Cock fighting has different meanings in the south and on the west coast... ;)
Come on to Memphis and I'll take you shooting, problem is most of our politicians are in jail or on their way...
I'll take you around the blues highway
Cock fighting can have different meanings here too. Depends on which county.
I don't see politicians being in jail as a problem. Most belong there. Our county mayor, Knox county, is under TBI investigation and a few of his little helpers too. There's an effort to get a recall election too. At any rate it looks like he and his buds are in for some serious trouble over misuse of funds and falsifying receipts plus a host of other charges.
I'm still planning on getting to Memphis for that drink and some serious of some old blues musicians.
Take care!
I do take photographs of women and I've been lucky not to have any problem with my significant other, friends or family. Mostly street shots. However, I do have concerns about what my employer (the local school board) may think of them so I generally do not show them for that reason combined with the fact that the photographs themselves aren't really good.
When it comes to photographs of women, I really do admire those of Garry Winogrand. I admit that when I see a very attractive woman, I can't help but look at them in the same way as Winogrand photographed them.

Been with my wife( http://www.fotocommunity.de/pc/pc/mypics/617035/display/6899740 ) since 1984 and to this day she tells me:
"As long as you eat at home, I don't care where you get your appetite..."
Lots of appetite; never miss a meal...
Cheers,
Michael
PS: The picture was taken Oct.2006 during a workshop by Guido Karp.
"As long as you eat at home, I don't care where you get your appetite..."
wow!
I'll keep that in mind.
mine don't care. (Well, as far as I know ;-) .
but I'm not too interested in beautiful women photography, if I was.. I don't know.

her: who's this?
me: dunno.
her: what you mean you don't know, who is this?
me: i don't know.
her: so you just go out drinking randomly taking pictures of girls? why is she smiling at you, who is she?
me: i don't know, but do you see her boyfriend next to her? i'm pretty sure they were both laughing at something and i just took a picture.
her, zooming in on the picture: who is she? and if she's a nobody, why did you have to take 2 pictures of her?
and so it went...

this was taken at a 3rd anniversary of a local restaurant/bar for which the owner asked me to attend and take some photos. i really don't think i did anything wrong :(

So is there a pool running at the bar, to bet on how much longer you stay with with "her."
i'd like to think we're just going through a rough patch, long distance can do that to you...right?
It's also kind of an artistic issue. Before pressing the shutter I ask myself "What is the motivation for creating this image, does the world need it?" If the motivating force is "Gee, I'd like to bang that", it's kind of hard to justify the image -- on grounds of that being the most pedestrian and uninteresting thought in the universe. (Don't get me wrong, I love erotic photography, just not interested in making any.)
