Jupiter-12 on Leica/Leitz Minolta CL

I know the Leica/ Leitz Minolta isn't exactly regarded as a true Leica M but I hope this forum can forgive my ignorance. :)

I just got a 'new' Leitz Minolta CL (serial nr. 1024xxx) and I'm wondering if anyone ever tried it with a Jupiter-12 35mm + adapter.
Will it fit? I know of the problems fitting the J-12 to a Bessa due to J's bum sticking out too much and touching (hitting?) the shutter blades.:)

I'd assume the same applies to the CL body, RML. I was about to get one of those myself a while ago, but then I had to consider the back protraction and gave it up.

Maybe a Jupiter 8 would be a better choice. Do you have budget constraints?

I'd suggest that using a J-12 with such an expensive body is too risky. I have the J-12, and it really is frightening how much it sticks out at the back. Alas, I only have a Zorki 4k to use with it...

RML, I have a J-12 in screw mount myself and that rear element almost touches the shutter curtains on my fsu rangefinders.

According to Karen Nakamura, the rear element would in fact touch the metering cell on the CL. BTW, as it's the Leica CL sister, I guess it's not out of place in the Leica M forum :)

Also, if you're seriously considering that lens... well it's not a bad performer at all but it's VERY prone to flare and ghosting when there's some light source in the frame, so if possible, you may consider one of the new Cosina Voigtlander 35s...

On the subject of Russian lens quality, what do you think of the Jupiter-9, 85mm/f2? It's just that I've bought one, but haven't used it yet, and was wondering what to expect.

I already have a J-8 and it's on my Bessa R. Right now I'm waiting for a Marumi 35/135 and a 50/75 LTM-M adapter. When they get here I'll try the 50mm on the CL, though I'm inclined to keep the J-8 on the Bessa R.

I don't really have financial restrictions but as I already have the J-12, and because I don't really enjoy using it on the FED2's, FED5's or Zorki 4 I own (rangefinder is waaaaay too small and dim to use it on a regular/ daily basis with glasses), I wanted to try it on the CL.
It seems I might be out of luck again! Isn't there any decent (Leica III's handle just as crap as my FED's and Zorki) and affordable (I don't consider any Leica M to be affordable) RF camera that can take the J-12? I don't really fancy spending yet another $200 or $300 on a new CV 35mm when I already have a good performer like the J-12.

My 85mm J-9 flares like h*ll. The quality of the photos look fine except for the flare, which makes the usability drop to almost zero IMO. A 49mm tele lens hood should do the trick, according to some, but getting hold of one seems nigh impossible. Even on eBay most 49mm hoods are the wide angle type. I got one of those but it's no use.

I remember one Japanese site featuring a Canon P mounting the J-12. The common agreement is that's impossible due to internal pieces on the Canon, so I was a bit shocked when I saw that site.

Anyway a Canon P or 7 will cost you more than $200... honestly I can't think of a solution, if you really like that lens, consider the Fed or Zorki as the price for using it :)

There's a particular situation nobody has addressed here (I'll check if someone did in the Photo.net Leica forum): the framelines. I doubt the CL has framelines wider than 40mm.

Given that you don't have finantial restraints, why not try a Minolta Rokkor 40mm lens on your CL? If I'm not mistaken, there's one for sale HERE, (http://www.keh.com) at KEH. And it's going for a very affordable price! :)

It's a good resource.

I've two J-9's in Kiev mount. They are very sharp but mine flare if you look at them funny- they are rough that way. Even with a hood. Bright lights in-frame are enough to cause the rest of the image to go soft. The other side of the lens is it's wonderful look- the gentle bokeh, and even though it's very sharp (some reports are over 100lpm!) is gentle on portraiture. I like the lens.


Anyone want an 85mm CV in Nikon mount (only used once)? I want a Leica LTM lens. Gotta find someone to trade... :-)

it's strange, but now that i think, my longest focal lens on my rf's is 50... and 35 the shorter one ! a pretty reduced range but somehow never felt the need of longer lenses.

The violet coating is generally on the older J-12 lenses.

As what is better?

With all FSU gear it is a matter of individual sampling regardless of the year of manufacture or the color of the lens barrel or the colour of the lens coating. I speak from my own experience.
