I ordered mine from Amazon UK earlier today. It's weird that they're shipping it ahead of the official release date though (not that I'm complaining!)

Actually, the original release date was to be the 50th anniversary of the original, May 15. I am patiently waiting for mine!
Am also waiting via amazon.ca; ordered mine in Feb. Forgot about it! I recently got Friedlander, MoMA for $35 , also from Amazon. That is a great book! Must weigh 5 pounds, has over 800 photos, and is printed on decent paper. Awesome value.
Teus - you can probably get it from Amazon Germany: http://www.amazon.de/?tag=cdrebyc603-21 - atleast it's listed as such at theonlinephotographer http://theonlinephotographer.com/the_online_photographer/blog_index.html

I ordered 2 copies off Amazon USA and the original May 15 ship date was bumped up to June 15. I hope the print quality of the newer edition is on par with some more recently published photo books in my collection! I cant't wait to see it!

Still waiting, today Amazon in the US said it would ship next week...
Got mine from amazon.co.jp on May 26th.
Oh. I thought this was a thread about many Americans not wanting to ship items overseas in the Classifieds....

Got mine from Amazon UK (birthday present from my sister) today.

well, it looks like the Americans go out first in France ... got my copy. Not the usual three months delay compared to the US ...
The book has been available at London bookstores since mid May.
Actually, does anyone know what size the original copy of "The Americans" was? Coz the one that is available now is kind of microscopic....
[QUOTE: well, it looks like the Americans go out first in France...]
Ha! Just like the original edition.
Cheers,
Gary
So the one I just ordered is small? Crap.....
Those are the dimensions on Amazon 24.5 x 22.1 x 2.1 mm
It looks decent on paper but I was very surprised by the size when I had it in my hands....
It is similar in size to the first US edition by Grove Press: about 7" x 8".
Other printings, like the Aperture edition where larger.
Cheers,
Gary

Teus,
you may try at www.micamera.com, an italian on line bookshop. I have no relation with them, I've just bought some book from them and I've been very pleased.

Well, it was printed in Germany.
By the way, did anyone else notice that the red paper 50th anniversary band left red staining on the first and last pages? It came off with an eraser but it means my book is imperfect right from the start. Ah well...

PhotoEye.com (http://www.photoeye.com/) is probably a better place to get books like this, if you are concerned about problems like this. They take extra care about these things. A bit more expensive, but sometimes it's worth it.
I think the red band was added by the publishers (it was inside the shrink wrap that was on the book after all) so getting it from a different source wouldn't have made a difference.

Hi,
received my copy directly from the publisher house Steidl here in Germany. There was no red band around it. Wonder who might have added that.
The book is fabulous, however.

My book came in today from PhotoEye and it did have a red band but no discoloring of the book at all. If that happens I would call whomever you bought it from and ask for a replacement copy.
--I am amzed at how much the images almost look like they are printed on Fiber based paper. Wonderful reproductions!! And I like that some of the images are uncropped, unlike in the original book. Not that many were cropped in the orig version and the ones that were was only slight here and there.
has anyone gotten theirs from amazon.com? i see they bumped it back farther.

Well shoot. Wish I had known about this site before. Oh well. Have had mine pre-ordered from Amazon (US) for a while now. Hmm... if it hasn't shipped yet, which it hasn't, wonder if I should cancel it and instead get it from photoeye.....

Amazon.ca has done the same thing.
Amazon.ca has done the same thing.
Ditto, I think those bozos forgot to actually ORDER copies. I can't believe I actually pre-ordered a book, and that no copies were secured!
To all the Canuckleheads: Should be in the mail!
It looks like my copy from Amazon (US) shipped yesterday - I'm hoping it'll be waiting for me at home.
I also pre-ordered a while back.

I unexpectedly received my copy from usa Amazon today (ordered on Feb. 8). Unfortunately, it has the RED BAND issue. I guess I'll give it the erase attempt. For such a trumpeted re-release, this seems to be a real screwup.
On another note, I had also ordered the "Robert Frank: Paris" book, released by Steidl at the same time. It arrived yesterday and it is also a delight, without any RED BAND.
larry
I got my copy from the wifes work yesterday, great well pleased.
Got the email from Amazon.ca and I'm awaiting the copy with a brick and a lantern, as we say.
Mine did, in fact, arrive this afternoon from Amazon (US) and it's an immaculate copy without the red banding others here have experienced.
It's exciting to see the insert from the publuisher with some other upcoming Frank work being available again... including some DVDs.

I am VERY disappointed in the reproductions in the new Steidl version of the Americans when compared side by side to the Scalo version. So much so that I regret wasting the money on it. It’s interesting to see the variations with regards to the differing crops between the two. Some of the Scalo photos are less cropped then the Steidl versions but the majority of the Steidl photos are less cropped then the Scalo photos.
The printing of the Canal Street-New Orleans photo in the Steidl version is extremely poor among a few others when compared side by side to the Scalo. :(
My copy of the Americans is shipping. Shipping back to Amazon.com that is. The quality of the printing was just too poor to accept.
What did he shoot with?

They had some copies of this book at a book shop at Berlin when I was there for a long weekend last month.
The new edition of PhotoEye magazine has all kinds of stuff about the book and Frank. Online version here...

That is interesting; I was just looking at my Steidl and Scalo editions and thinking that the Steidl is much better. The paper stock is vastly better, the ink is a better tone and while the shadow separation is better in the Scalo edition, this is not how Frank's prints look, or how he generally printed at that time.
I like the Steidl edition very much - right down to the small format. It's how Robert Frank thinks we should look at the book, which is good enough for me.

You can order it direct from steidlville.com, 30 euro.
I bought my copy in a specialised bookshop in Brussels this week (they had the English, French and German versions in stock). Great book!
