View Full Version : where to buy a used M6 in New York?
I will be visiting New York next thursday (coming from Barcelona) and i had planned to buy a used M6 from Tamarkin. But to my surprise, they no longer have their shop open! I was looking for a Ex+ or mint M6 (around 1300-1500$) plus a new VC 35/1.7.
Photovillage has some cosina stuff, but all their used M6 are 0.85 (i wear glasses and am not confortable with that viewfinder magnification).
Any other place to look at?
Thank's!
There is one now in the classifieds on RFF, buying here is a great solution because you are buying from people who know the equipment. Maybe he could ship it to your hotel in NYC or something like that.

Adorama also has a store in NY and good used prices.
Just avoid some of the stores near Times Square. Not only are they tourist traps, their sales people are bold and very, very extremely uninformed. I walked into one, with my Canonet in hand, and a guy walked up to me and said "I know what you need. You need a telephoto lens for that camera!"

Rich Pinto runs a good shop. I've purchased many items from them. Prices are excellent. They are also home to the Leica Gallery, so you can look at some prints for inspiration, on the way out the door. ;-)
Kurland is in the same building as the leica gallery these days, but photo village is still good to go as well
Photovillage is a good option.
I would email them and ask what they have in stock.
New York is filled with Europeans these days.
Everything is 1/2 price with the strong euro.
Jaifo- I lived in BCN for 3 years, Email me if you have any questions.

I'll give another plug for PhotoVillage. Very friendly service.
I was not particularly impressed with Kurland. He was downright rude and dismissive, but I might have caught him at a bad time, who knows.

Check the used products at Bergen County Camera: www.bergencountycamera.com. They have a new store in Englewood, NJ (not far from the George Washington Bridge) and are very fair and accomodating. If you wanted something, I'm sure they would ship it to your hotel. I shop there frequently.

Bergencountycamera has had a lot of my business. I've also had good experiences with thephotovillage.

This is my opinion of Kurland as well even though I was buying an expensive item from him. (My M8)
He also wasn't very helpful on a later service/ warranty related issue.
Thumbs up for Rich at PhotoVillage. Sam and Jill at Classic Connection in Connecticut are also great to deal with.
You might want to try and use www.craigslist.com
There is one M6 for sale there now, but the price (w/ lens) is higher than your target.

you could also post a "wanted" ad.

Try this. You can pick it up at the store. Kurt M.

Call Photovillage and ask if they have what you are looking for. Often they might have one in or they will keep an eye out for what you want. They found an M4-P for me a few years back. I called and they didn't have one and a week later they did and they called me back.
Also the Leica guys in B and H's used department are very friendly and knowledgeable. Go to B and H and just head upstairs. Just know that if you get in on Thursday, plan on getting there early on Friday morning as they are only open till about noon or 1pm as they are run by very religious Jews and they shut down early for the sabbath and are closed on Saturdays.

I have tried to buy from these folks a few times, including an M7 recently. Not the friendly of lots and certainly not at all helpful. Will NEVER buy from them again.
Cheers,
If you buy at Adorama you better know how to look over and judge a used camera. I mean you have to know what to look for and what signs might indicate a camera to avoid. If this is your first Leica I'd stay away.
I like Eli, but if a store rubs me wrong I would never buy there. I am shocked you bought an M8 from a small dealer you did not like, when there are so many choices in NYC for Leica. I would never do it.
Photovillage, B&H, Adorama -- all exactly the same price since they will match one another.
Don't be shocked.
It was a demo model for a good price. The other shops that you mention only had (have) new models at full cost.
True, I could have walked away but I preferred to get what I wanted for a good price.
This is New York, after all.
the Kurland guys have gone out of their way to be helpful to me, im surprised people have issues with any of them. very nice folks in my opinion. ive only talked with them in person however.
and bergen county camera? really? those are my go-to folks whenever I make big purchases. i take the bus from NYC just to give them my business. I cant tell you how good rob has been to me. sold me my first leica! reminds me i gotta give that dude some prints
also rich let my broke ass play around with a noctilux just because i asked nice, so photovillage also gets a vote from me too.

Thanks - there has been some very useful info here. While I've certainly heard of photovillage, popflash, Tamarkin and a lot of other stores neither Kurland or Bergen Country were listed on the Leica FAQ pages (and some of the links there are now dead or up for sale).
Cheers,

This forum is soooo helpful!
Thank's everyone for your help!
I've tried to reach photovillage by mail but my message is sent back always. (info@photovillage.com) Any other email you know?
I have also seen some interesting M6 between 1250-1750$ at Adorama, but i'm not very sure to buy there. I'm more confident buying to someone with the good reputation as the guys at Photovillage, but they only have 0,85 units there...... What is you opinion about Adorama? I had a M6 some years ago (ttl, o,85, which i sold to buy my Hassy SWC) but i'm not really sure i would be able to detect any technical faults on a used M6.
Jaime.

I'll second the comment about Bergen Co--they're tops!!!!! Nice guys (unlike their neighbors in NYC) and 100% honest.
