View Full Version : Stranded on an Island Scenario
Ok here is the scenario:
You're going to be stranded on an infinitely photograph-able island for a year with your favorite camera, BUT you can only take one b&w film with you and one developer, no other option exists.
Which film and developer do you take?
For those of you who process your own film, figure that you'll have the capabilities to process your own film and control the development, and for those of you that don't process your own film assume that you can have your film processed to your specifications. So let's here your picks. :p
oops! I would take Tri-X and D76 (or ID11).

I'd take something that can resist in those conditions for more than a year ;)
Even better: I would take only film and skip the developer for some bottles of that other type of fluid.
Neopan 400 and Rodinal!
Roman
Any darkroom chemicals that are flammable so I could light the film boxes on fire for a signal fire once I was thru shooting.

Can I trade the camera and darkroom in for Elizabeth Hurley?
Can I trade the camera and darkroom in for Elizabeth Hurley?
Can I trade the island for Elizabeth Hurley and a dark room?
Ahem. Since APX25 is gone, I'd take PlusX.
Rob
Assuming that island isn't NYC, then either apx100 or fp4+ & rodinal.
If it's NYC, then Tri-X and Diafine.
Tr-X and D-76 -- the mother's milk of B&W photography.
Tr-X and D-76 -- the mother's milk of B&W photography.
Problem is, your jug of D-76 wouldn't last a year. Diafine would. :)
Tri-X and Diafine.

Well stated Tom, this is my second choice.

What to choose...
I love the look of the Delta films made by Ilford, but I'm also a fan of Tri-X. I'd probably choose Delta 400 if I was stranded with one film even though I like both equally.

Aah, you must've seen her on the morning show, modelling her new line of swim wear! :)

Stephanie,
I've used the TMax films, but not the Deltas, although I keep hearing good things about them. What developer would you use to process your Delta 400?
Problem is, your jug of D-76 wouldn't last a year...
Tom
This isn't a worry on this island, you've got plenty here. :)

O contraire. I use D-76 1:1, one-shot. I mix a gallon and divide it up into 16-oz plastic bottles. A unopened bottle will keep that long and even an opened one does pretty well if you squeeze out most of the extra air.
Actually I could probably survive with HC 110 and the syrup has a very long shelf life.
I'll choose Ilford FP4 at EI 250 in Diafine... Useful speed, nice tonality and granularity, convenient.
No matter what I would I probably wouldn't be able to get the film on the spool anyway..... But in theary I would take Delta and DD-X. Whenever the spooling works I find this a nice combo. However I am going to try Tri.X and D76 nest, have heard good things about it.....
The chances are it will take quite some time before I do find out, not for lack of film or photos, but getting the film properly on the spool. Last time this worked for me was 2 days ago and I promptly exchanges the fix and stop baths .... getting very milky negs, awell I am a man with patience....
Australia...worlds biggest island! :D
Tri-X, everything from 200-1600iso! Schweet....

Scala and since it is a proprietary developing process , I would send it out. So I'm substituting the developer for another developer 'Lagavulin'
cheers, Jan

I would take Polaroid Type 55 P/N and Sodium Sulfite. Who needs a dark room?

Aren't all continents surrounded by water?
Then Eurasia must be the biggest island. :p
