Hi,

here's the content of a shoebox a friend of mine in Tashkent found on the (partially plundered) attic of a deceased collector friend of his:

58076
(Top view, serial number 4082, "FED Trudkommuna" logo")

58077
(Bottom view, a bit corroded)

58078
(Front view, the lens is a little bit blind overall)

So this is where these things come from, and how they look before, slightly retouched, they make their way into glass cupboards elsewhere in the world :)

1934-1935 Fed 1a, the fed prewar cameras fed 1b are going around $ 200/250. There is no 1a now on ebay....So...it was a real real good find..

Wow, this is an early FED from 1935, when Makarenko was still in charge for the FED labour commune ! J.V. Stalin asked for Russian Leica and got a FED like this -- from Makarenko's Ukrainian labour commune, where among other things child labour was used... Congratulations to your friend for such a find and thank you for posting the pictures.
