Okay, I am finally ready to buy a pro level inkjet printer for Black and White printing. I have been tempted by the new HP 8850 and the Canon 9500 and I have read everything I could find on these two printers and the HP 9180. I have decided to go with the Canon since I can now buy it for less than $600, with the rebate calculated into the deal. Other factors include higher resolution (4800 x 2400 vs 4800 x 1200) and smaller pico liter size (3.0 vs 4.5) So, any final words of encouragement or caution?

You could get yourself wonderful wet darkroom gear, that would last the rest of your life, with half that money then spend the rest on film . . .

I read a while back about a company in Brighton, England which manufactures digital enlargers. Can't remember more than it being fitted with a transparent LCD which projects digital files onto classic photo paper.

However (and I expected this) be prepared to put some time and effort into colour-managed workflow (profiles for different paper, soft-proofing etc. etc.) to get really good results.

Thanks for the replies. I have ordered the Canon 9500. The price is now below $600 USD so it seemed like the best choice. I know that I will have to relearn and redefine what I want my prints to look like.
