I have heard my friend heard it from some one about new leica M8-2 and 3 new lenses are coming out very soon. Have any one heard about it? New leica M8-2 will have so called P mode. "Program mode?" I said to my friend. He said no it it "P"rofessinal mode!?

And new lens coming out are: 21/3.8 lens 24/1.4 lens, 50/0.98 noct lens.

Please confirm these rumor please.

Thanks

SO If it is true , I will not buy M8 yet. I will wait another year.

Leica's current focus is on the R replacement. Nor would a 0.98 Nocti make much sense. It can be redesigned but most likely to an ASPH.

Ask your friend to share what ever he has other than rumors. It would be better than the rumors it's producing.

I understand the Easter Bunny has been engaged in extensive beta testing.

Nothing to see here, move along...

I chuckled.

The rumour is probably based on Canon/Nikon Production cycles. People figure It's been around since September 14th '06 (release date was my Birthday :) ) that it would be time for a new one. But Leica has no competition. And it does a fine job at what it does. So why bother. I'd put good money on the M8 being around for at least another 18 months, likely more.

And those three new lenses are probably the Summarits he's referring to. Leica's new "budget" lenses to help push M8 sales.

I think right now Leica is pretty much concentrating on not hemorrhaging any more money. They are just getting their house in order. I doubt they know what they are going to do for sure.

I know they keep proposing an SLR, but who in the world would buy it? There are not enough old National Geographic photographers left, to support a $10,000 DSLR body.

I heard it's going to be made by CV and sell for about $2,500....I wonder if they will offer both black and chrome?

Posting this sort of heresay is a complete waste of everyones time. If you wait a year you have lost a years digital M shooting and there is no way to get that back. Give an M8 a try out and see for yourself. If it does what you want get one. Tomorrow is another day.

exactly! digital cameras are exactly the same as computers in as far as there is no right time to buy. There will always be something on the horizon thats more well featured, sorted etc. Far better to decide if what's available now fits your needs.
In my case the M8 doesn't, but waiting for the ultimate digicam or computer for that matter, IMHO a waste of time and lost opportunity.

Erik - it is only to save money in hard times. Announcing a new product with free post in RFF is much more economic than a pc at photokina. :)

Two important words for you to remember: Shoot film

Why? Film wont be upgraded next Tuesday with film.2

If you got to have the digital and want that short camera life where you can have a brick that is worthless to try and resell....try a canon, I couldn't give my 20D away now if I wanted to.

Kodak upgraded some films last week..... Is your 20D broken? Are the photographs bad? So why is it a brick and why would you want to sell it? The Newest and Bestest Syndrome?

funkaoshi
03-27-2008, 09:09
Exactly. I still shoot with my Rebel XT, which works perfectly well, despite the fact I can buy an XTi. The XTi didn't make my XT a brick, just like the MP didn't make the M3 a brick. Film cameras aren't magical.

A mere 3 years of use and its dead. Of course in those three years I shot 80,000 some photos with it and all the buttons on it are worn out not to mention the shutter is sputtering and the auto focus mechanism is shot, oh and the black metal finish is now white. Other then that, yeah, great, its been to places with me all around the world and back.

As for Kodak updating some films, is it going to give you some sort of magnificent jump in image quality? Suddenly 35mm being able to out do medium format? The difference between film and digital is that in digital the same sized thing can have drastic changes in its image quality produced through upgrades, film doesn't.

Film cameras are not magical, but they are consistent.

Simple calculation: I sold my 10D a few weeks ago, 350 Euro, new 1250. 900 Euro loss.. I took over 9000 exposures on it. 300 slide films at 20 Euro each. Makes 6000 Euros saved. 1 M8....

Although I have not heard anything about a M8-2 or a new 21, I know Leia has been developing a new 50mm Noctilux and I have heard murmurings of a new 24mm M lens.

Quite frankly, none of this would surprise me.

nobbylon
03-27-2008, 09:37
jaapv, another calculation.
2 rolls a week processed for a year = 300 euro
cost of film = 100 euro
cost for 3600 exposures = 400 euro
film for me is much cheaper than digital!
and i'm still left with a camera capable of probably 350000 exposures!
I'm not against the M8 but I can't make the maths work. If it was 1500 euros new then maybe.
each to their own eh!

Have you priced a new MP recently?

nobbylon
03-27-2008, 09:49
Bill,
I have an MP, and it will probably still be taking pictures long after you and I have departed this one! Provided film is still out there! I have huge reservations about an M8 doing the same! like I said, each to their own.:D
I think this whole M8 debate really does come down to whether or not it's affordable. For the fortunate ones who have the money to spend on one then great and who cares that it breaks down now and then and that it will probably be old news in a few years.
For those of us who don't have that kind of money as disposable then I think film Leica is the way to go and like myself probably have a digi Nikon, Canon or Pentax knowing full well that it's outdated rapidly but still capable of producing nice pics.

Bill l personally am not enough of a "I have to have new" fetishist to buy an MP, when there are literally a flood of used Leica bodies out there, some well under a grand.

For my money, you cannot beat an M3, if film is your choice, because of the viewfinder, although I use a Nikon S2 for the same reason.

I have just started up again shooting film, but it is interesting to work more deliberately.

Whoa...80,000 shots, say 36 pic rolls, say one roll a week, you shot 42 YEARS worth of film in three years and are complaining about the life od the camera?:bang:... they dont make them the way they used to I guess:rolleyes:

Anyway...I am posting to thank Erik about his post:

Rare, great humour like this is the single reason I visit rumour threads about the next M8.

Ok it doesn`t matter now. I will go get M8 maybe next month. It is not like I need it. But I want to it! I just love that quality. I need a new toy!
And yes Film camera is still better but Just cost of film + processing and conveniency reason digital is more practical for me now. Often I have a roll of film in a camera over a month. I don`t want take it out because cost of processing is same even I have taken 12 shots or 37 shots.
With digital would take shot of something Just to see, but film I really have to think about If i want to take this shot or not. More stress. Film might be better for improving my photography but I just want to take photos and enjoy. Well I still have canon 10D and I love it. I also have Leica R6.2,R8 + few lenses, which I am intending to sell for M8.
I want to start M form M8. But probably I want to buy a m6 camera later. Another collecting habit which will keep me occupied for a while!!!
Thanks everyone!

So after our extended exchange on the other thread are you shooting raw with your M3? Looked at your photos. "9th Street Light" is very good. Is the camera shake in "9th Street" deliberate?

I sneezed... :)

Re the M3 -- sold that years ago, sadly, since it was a DS, with glass pressure plate. I am using my S2 with a CV 21 and finder.

Thanks for the compliment, I had hesitated to put up photos, but the reaction has been very good, and many comments quite useful, as I move toward the final photos of the "building." I was pleased that people seem to find the new photos accessible.

If my maths aren't out that is about 100 shots a day, each and every day. I shudder to convert that to the cost of film. Economically speaking, I would say those 1500$ or so you paid for it are well and truly written off......

WOW, Thanks Nice looking Cameras! Yep chrome one looks better. SO 50/2.8 lens is attached and closed position there I believe that is no problem. But I am thinking to use old LTM mount elmar 50/3.5 or 35/3.5 lens. Can I use them with m8? I mean I can close lens without damaging shutter of m8? what is clearance from lens mount to shutter? DOes any one use these lenses with m8?

I knew it!

BUT I think old one will be more interesting lens. I heard only one person was making this lens. Lens were hand polished by this experienced lens maker. And he had recently retired. So no one can make it . That is why leica have to make new one. But, this lens will be super sharp super nice bokeh = look like modern computer designed machine polished machine adjusted lens = too perfect = boring lens.

I think leica product was not perfect camera which make more enjoyable to use.

I guess it is a good idea to borrow money get 50/1.0 lens b4 runs out.

What do u think?

avotius so absolutely right. unlike avotius and other film photographers, i love shooting digital, but this is another topic. the point is when you go digital you have to resolve with yourself accepting the fact that technology changes quickly. what you just bought today will become old obsolete the next. if you want to go digital, commit now to a model and resolve not to let new model announcements take away your pleasure of photography (film or digital).

when i finally bought my m8, i've bought it with the understanding that this expensive camera will become obsolete quickly when compared to film cameras. it's the unfortunate nature of the electronics industry. so i resolved with myself that when i buy this camera, i shall commit to ignore all new announcements of newer and better models. if i don't, i know i'll never be happy with my m8 or never buy one because i'll always be waiting for the next latest and greatest.

Matthew

Yes, don't let the new model announcements distract you. The first step in achieving that is to banish the idea of obsolence from your mind. From so many perspectives (photographic, environmental, personal financial) thinking this way is something to avoid. Any digital camera you buy today will still be able to make great images many years from now and, while it may be superceded by newer models, it will not truly be obsolete.
