Have you ever seen a Buddha in a burger joint? Thought how beautiful your mother looked in her hanbok or cheong sum or ao dai at your college graduation ceremony? We want to see instances like these and more — photographs that depict a thriving Asian heritage in the less-expected places.

Photographers of all ethnicities who live in North America are invited to submit photographs that illustrate “Asian Heritage in Your Own Backyard.” (Limit of three submissions per photographer, please.)

Please submit original photos on a CD. File size should be 3-5 megabytes. Photos more than 5 megabytes will not be reviewed. Allowed file types: .jpg, .jpeg.

Submissions must be accompanied by:
1. A description of the photograph, including why it is an example of Asian heritage in your own backyard. Please also include full names of any people in the picture.
2. The time and place the photograph was taken
3. The camera used
4. Photographer’s contact information, including full name, mailing address, e-mail address and phone number

The Northwest Asian Weekly accepts no responsibility for submitted materials and will not return submissions unless accompanied by a self-addressed, stamped envelope.

Deadline is April 30, 2008. Finalists and winners will be published in the Northwest Asian Weekly, and the winning photograph will be announced in May.

Judging will be based on aesthetic quality, creativity and fulfillment of the contest’s theme. Finalists will be selected by Northwest Asian Weekly staff, who retain the right to reject any submission.

First place will receive a cash prize of $200, a commemorative plaque and a copy of “Looking for Asian America,” signed by Huie. Second- and third-place winners will receive award certificates and an assortment of books.

The winner will be selected by special guest judge Wing Young Huie, photographer and author of “Looking for Asian America,” a photography book that explores the intersection of Asian American and Asian cultures. Huie’s photographs have been exhibited at the Walker Art Center, the Minneapolis Institute of Arts and the Minnesota Museum of American Art, and he is a recipient of Bush Artist and McKnight fellowships.
