View Full Version : All Brass Baby
Has anyone ever used a complete bare Leica?
It sure does look nice, but would there be a problem
with corrosion or anything like that?

It would be cheaper than getting it painted, but its quite flashy.
Here are some pictures to illustrate what I am talking about.

Like that black DR more than the all brass M4!

Yeah, Tom, I've never seen one of those!
Leica supposedly made one as a special order, but it was a later one than the one shown. I know that Shintaro in Tokyo has painted some too. Usually you can see a telltale brassing on the flat locking surface where the "goggles" have been slid on/off.

I think it would only look cool if the bottom plate was brassed also.
My M3 is down to the Nickel (dechromed). The tactile feeling is exquisite. Sticky in hot conditions, I give the M3 a good massage with my fingers since it's so fun to hold.
I believe a completely brassed camera would be close to what I'm describing...
Ara, you can't brass a rapidwinder. ;)
Bojic, the back of my M3 is worn off where someone wrote their name and phone number. It really does feel sticky in a sense, and I like it.

Hmm, that m4 is looking cold! Be a decent chap and clothe her in some black paint ;)

Yep, same here.
By the way, if that is a real black paint DR it's worth some serious cash. I think the last one I saw went for $4000. Original black paint M4's are also rare and worth $$$.
Who's camera is it?

Wish it was my camera, but it was just a simple google search.

couple of weeks ago i was at the local camera shop and witnessed an old man trying to sell a black paint m4 (from what i could see the m4 was in very good shape with some brassing but alot of black left on it) to the store... and was quoted $700 by the man behind the counter. i tried to intervene and said that i would be interested in buying his camera... i just got a screw face from the clerk and the old man said "yes, it's a leica m4" then turned away and just went about his business being of being screwed by the store. i went back a few days ago to see if they still had it and a different clerk told me they sold it for $2500. shame shame shame.
..maybe i should have shouted "hey you're being robbed !!!"
I would have bought it off him for a grand right there.

very nice.. i like that chrome top plate look :)
On close examination we can see the black paint left over like between the shutter speed knob and the advance lever or between the viewfinder and the frame illuminator window. So it's not an all brass naked M but a really un-paint black M.

What's become of Jim Marshall? I'd like to get a hold of him. Old friend.
Cheers...

hey that second photo in the op looks like the hamburger eyes opening in DUMBO. I remember seeing that guy with the brass leica.
It is the Hamburger Eyes opening.
His Leica spurred my interest in the all brass Leica.
