View Full Version : Does your M8 make up it's own mind about settings occasionally?

I thought I was imagining things a while ago when it happened and figured that somehow I had triggered it but now and then my M8 appears to alter settings all on it's own and did it again recently.

I took about forty photos at a particular location the other day and had made a point of not selecting any of my 1,2 or 3 pre-programmed user settings but used the default and set it manually to DNG ... cloudy WB and 640 ISO. The pics were taken in about twenty minutes and I may have turned the camera off briefly at one stage but thats all ... I didn't use the review function once as I had selected 'off' in the menu before I started shooting.

When I downloaded the pics I discovered that half way through the series the settings had altered ... WB had gone to Auto and ISO to 320. I'm mystified by this and was wondering what I might have done to trigger the change. As I said no deliberate alterations were made to the camera at all during the shoot ... in fact the panel on the Luigi half case was never unsnapped to look at the screen once!

Has anyone else had this happen?

Yep - if you switch batteries, even turning off I have seen it happening ... One more reason to stay in user mode.

I think I've worked out what the problem is. The Luigi case with the flap for the LCD in place puts a little pressure on the buttons and because you're not really aware of the position of them it's easy to inadvertantly put pressure on the case and trigger them. So simple ... and I'm relieved that it appears to be that uncomplicated.

The trouble with owning an M8 is that when something like this happens it's too easy to blame the camera! :p

That is a smart explanation. I'm sure it is correct.

I don't have any of the user profiles set, and none of my settings has ever changed by themselves, and I also use the Luigi case and never take the back flap off except to format a card or set the WATE to 16mm for my CV 15. However one time I did go in to the user profile place on the menu, and although I didn't set one, when I shut the camera off and later turned it on everything had reverted to the factory defaults.

Sometimes when I use the M8 I feel like I’m riding an old Harley-Davidson. It looks cool, renders well with the right lens but its finicky as a wife! Setting the User Profiles is not an intuitive process and I do occasionally have to stop chewing gum when I walk. Not sure this would be my first choice if I had to do it over again. Who knows, perhaps I'm just already a bit jaded.
