i am interested in knowing whether any of you guys has shot tethered
with the leica and if yes do you know if it safe given the fact that a laptop and the camera work in different voltage (i think) and i have heard that this can cause damage to the camera .
please send me your opinion - knowledge etc
it would much appreciated.

thanks

Yes. I have tried it, and it works, no problem with the PC, or the M8. But why bother?

I must be missing something here... how can an M8 work tethered????

There is no live view, since the shutter is in the way of the sensor. The whole point of tethered shooting is for the studio, to shoot and control from your computer screen.

thanks everyone i did it with the leica program and lightroom and it works allright just a bit slow.

anyways there are a lot of stylists and fashion directors in fashion magazines that they want to see the styling on the screen.
they will not work with you otherwise
believe or not it is true
and also the M8 is perfect for fashion plus that fashion photographers shoot tethered on location as well not only in the studio.

thanks

Ah you talking seeing after the photo is taken?

Most any camera will do that. Some will not take photos while hooked to a monitor. My Lumix will do it, but it is basically just showing the LCD on my monitor.

Right now, as far as I know, only the two top end Olympus cameras, and most high end Canons shoot tethered.

i shoot tethered all the time..in studio...but only now that aperture 2.0 is out...the leica software does not work with 10.5 and even in 10.4 it is painfully slow....aperture works great....previews pop up nice and fast...there is an issue when shooting fast: frames are dropped...but only on the computer...the m8 writes to card AND shoots to the HD, so the frames can be imported later from the card....aple is aware of this and is working on a solution...i guess not to many people use the m8 to shoot tetherd, so i was the only one pointing this out to them....
afaik leica is working on an upgrade to the leica software for 10.5, but with aperture it is all in one app....very clean...and like i said..at least 3 times faster then the leica app in 10.4...

Ditto. Panos: Even with its kinks, Aperture handles tethered M8 shooting pretty seamlessly for most purposes.

I still do not understand how you can shoot tethered.

I can understand how you would display tethered, after the shot, but how in the world can you compose on an M8, since there is no Live View?

'tis true about shooting... yet for many, it's "seeing" the image on their computer /after/ the shot/shutter press: it's an instant gratification-through-software-on-the-computer that equates to "tethering".

Consider it as "my M8 is as my mouse: what my computer gives me is what I want".

The same way as you would with a Canon DSLR or MF back. You shoot as normal but the images get written directly to the HD and pop up on the computer screen after each shot so a client can monitor what you are shooting in almost real time and you can evaluate shots at full screen instead of on a tiny camera back LCD.

Instead of chimping with your camera's LCD after each shot you get to chimp on your computer monitor. Images will also be ready for post manipulation instantely. No waiting for the card to be transfered.

what you are talking about is usually referred to as "live view"...seeing the live image from the sensor on the screen...the problem with this is the heat produced by the sensor...because it is obviously constantly capturing....which leads to noise...cmos has less of a problem with this then ccd....some MF backs can provide live view...but what i can remember from my phase back it does not even compare to a p&s (live image on the back)...
either way the m8 does not have it and it only really works with constant lightsources/natural light....
tethered shooting just means some control (incl. actual firing of camera) from the keyboard and the files being shot to the HD of the connected computer....
