View Full Version : Some git stole my eBay...

Last night, I tried to access eBay, my password was rejected many times. I went to check my Yahoo account to see if it had anything in it to explain this, that too was rejected. Hmm I thought, dodgy.

I did a live chat with eBay (who, I have to say, were fantastic) and it turns out somebody got my log-in details for Yahoo (who so far have been very slow to respond) and from that got my eBay and Paypal details.

So, I spent hours altering all the eBay details, Paypal details, log-in details to places like this, then had to go to the bank to get my card blocked and a new one sent, which'll take a week. I now have a very secure account which means I can't order online (7dayshop, do they take phone orders? - I hope so!).

Now, I work with computers for about 12 hours per day. I know what I'm doing, never answer spam etc, always clear cache (have a batch that does it hourly) and reset Safari every evening. I have a hardware firewall which is solid, plus a software firewall which is solid, plus my own encryption on my drives. They did NOT get it from me or my computers.

So, I decided to do much illegal tinkering in the early hours and see if I could figure out what had happened.

My advice, and findings? Don't use Yahoo, it's about as secure as handing out leaflets with all your details on with a copy of your credit card attached.

Thank god eBay were on the ball.

Rant over, A.

My Yahoo password is not good anywhere else, and my user name on Yahoo is not the same as my eBay login. I'm an IT wonk too.

First, commiserations on the rip-off.

Second, congratulations on writing it up so well. A masterpiece of plain English! (Well, as plain as it can be once you let computers in...)

Cheers,

Roger

Do you buy and sell in large amounts or quantities? High-priced items? Just wondering...

Thanks for the warning note. I have changed my settings so that not all my passwords are the same... but I think I'm going to make further changes.

I hope that by now you're back on the saddle. Take care! :)
